Professor McFarlan

Kathleen arrived a couple of minutes early for her appointment. She was so excited, she had to force herself not to run down the plant filled hall like a kid. If her plans were doable, it could be so much fun her fourth and fifth year class. Oh come on, who was she kidding, it would be fun for her! If the headmaster said no, she’d take it like an adult, thank him for his time, run a tub full of bubbles and…and just cry. She’d sent an owl to Headmaster Bulla briefly outlining her ideas. He agreed to a meeting to discuss them further, so at least he was considering them.

She’d found the perfect spot for the overnight. She’d located a large butte soaring high above a plain only a couple miles away from campus. It was lined with the gorgeous rose, rust, blues and grays typical of the area. The summit was almost perfectly flat with no vegetation, no cracks or crevices the snakes, scorpions, and other unfriendly creatures liked to hide in. It would give her class a perfect view of the sky. There was plenty of room for a bonfire and for them to camp out later. They could return shortly after sunup.

Those were her selling points. They were good ones, she knew it. There would also be hitches and it was her superior’s job to enlighten her. She’d found nothing in the materials sent to her regarding field trips. Perhaps they weren’t allowed. After all, Sonora was out in the middle of nowhere in the heart of the Arizona badlands, there may be valid reasons she didn’t know about yet for such isolation.

If they were allowed, would she have to get permission from the parents, or had they already signed blanket permission slips for off campus excursions? What was the required staff to student ratio? What safety measures did she have to consider? Those questions and a dozen or more raced through her head.

“Slow down, Kat, or you’ll sound like a bloody idiot the moment you walk in,” she commanded herself firmly. Kathleen took a couple of cleansing breaths to center herself and then offered a quick prayer that the Goddess would smile on her endeavors. “After all, Headmasters have never been known to bite… often.”

Finding the correct branch of the tree by the door, she reached up and pulled. \n

Manfred read over the letter quickly before signing it with a flourish and handing it to the waiting owl. If it wasn't one thing it was another, and it seemed that this term that other appeared to me the media wanting to conduct interviews with his students during the term time. As if it wasn't bad enough that he had several traumatised students due to recent events, he wasn't going to have their studies further interrupted by an overly curious and nosy set of journalists. This wasn't the first denial he had had to write, and, he suspected, it wasn't likely to be the last for the year.

Now, what was next on today's agenda? Manfred checked his notes. Ah, the new Astronomy Professor had requested an appointment. It was somewhat refreshing after the collection of unannounced visitors he had found himself with last term. He still had a couple of minutes though, so there was time to get a couple more things done.

Or not.

There was a creak, and his door opened. Manfred looked up in surprise. He checked his watch again before rising to his feet.

"Professor McFarlan, it appears you're a little early. Take a seat," he indicated one of the seats opposite his desk and sat down himself. Clearing the space in front of himself a little, he made certain that both clean parchment and a quill were close at hand should they prove to be needed. "Now what was it that you wanted to talk to me about?"

Kathleen entered the office and the Headmaster’s request and sat on the edge of the chair he’d indicated. Under the guise of smoothing her robes, she tried to dry her palms. Why did they have to sweat every time she got nervous? Seeing the piles of parchments on his desk, she felt a pang of sympathy. Headmaster Bulla obviously had a great deal of things to wade through that day and she appreciated that he gave her the time he could have been using to clear some of those tasks out of the way.

"Now what was it that you wanted to talk to me about?"

Saints preserve us! Was he so busy that he didn’t remember her request? Well, she thought, glancing again at the clutter, she really couldn’t blame him, now could she? She hoped she wouldn’t add to the headache that was sure to come his way by the end of the day.

“Good afternoon, sir. Thank you for taking this time to discuss the possibility of my taking the fourth and fifth year class for an overnight stargazing field trip to the place I mentioned in the letter I sent to you.

“If this is feasible, there are some details I feel would be wise to work out. If not…” Kathleen took a moment and swallowed hard, commanding her voice to sound like an adult rather than a whiney child with a martyr complex. “… If not, I’ll completely understand. After all, this term has begun under a bit of a cloud. Yet, it might do the students good to get away for a night. Of, of course, the decision is yours.”

Enough, Kat! The poor man hasn’t said yes or no yet. Kathleen reprimanded herself. Don’t nag

"Oh. Yes."

The instant she started to talk Manfred recalled the letter. He twisted in his chair, poked around in his 'to be dealt with' pile (which was different to his 'in' and 'out' piles), pulled the letter out and skimming it as she continued to speak. He nodded to prove that he was listening still, eyes darting to and fro as they went down the page, refreshing his memory.

"Well," he said finally, once Kathleen had finished her spiel. He wondered briefly if she meant the media interest in the holiday experiences of two students by the 'cloud' but made a conscious decision not to pursue the topic. "I don't see why not. You'll need to talk to a couple of other staff members so as to provide adequate supervision for this trip, particularly as it will be overnight, and I'm sure arrangements can be made with Mr Tellerman for the wagons, they're rather useful for these situations. And I'd advise making it either a Friday or a Saturday night, so as to avoid too much interruption to the students studies - especially the fifth years. They have their CATS coming up at the end of the year, after all. It wouldn't do for them to have their other classes interrupted. If you can find at least one other staff member - and I'm afraid there will definitely have to be a male staff member along for propriety's sake - a date that won't cause interruption and provide me with a brief copy of the schedule you plan to follow for this excursion I'm sure there won't be any problems with my allowing it to go forth."

Kathleen blinked. That was all there was to it? She was so used to release forms and mounds of forms to fill out and if it had never been done before, feasibility studies and committee meeting presentations. Of course, there was a huge differences between her former university and Sonora, magic being the least of them. None of the Headmaster’s conditions were difficult or unreasonable. It just couldn’t be this easy.

Suddenly, she felt far less nervous. In fact, because she’d been prepared to debate and argue, she felt a bit deflated. Actually, it meant a lot to her that Headmaster Bulla entrusted someone so new to the school with his charges.

“Thank you, Sir,” a slow smile spread on her face. “I can make preparations and be ready to go as soon as Saturday, if that would be alright. I can prepare the sight Saturday afternoon and we can leave about a hour before sunset. Is there anything else I should know?”
