Rory Taransay was the new Head of House for Aladren. The Quidditch coach was on leave. John Umland had graduated from Sonora last year. These facts, when combined together, meant that Rory’s next task was to assign the position of Quidditch captain to the next lucky Aladren. Luckily for Rory, there was an obvious candidate for the task, and he didn’t have to deliberate between multiple students. He was glad for this, not wanting to start off on the wrong foot with of his charges.
Folding the letter, he attached it to his owl, who would deliver it to Aladren’s next captain. It read:
John Spencer,
I hereby officially nominate you as this year’s Aladren Quidditch Captain. Should you accept this responsibility, your duties will include creating the sign-up sheet, organising and running practices, and choosing a team to field for matches. I’d recommend Louis Valois as your Assistant Captain, but the choice is yours.
Please let me know if you do not wish to take up this position.
Good luck,
Professor Taransay

Finally receiving my due. [tag Louis]

It was his seventh year. Jack wasn't Head Boy, having lost to that good-for-nothing Owen Brockert - not that it was all that surprising, really - but he was confident he was going to do well enough to get a job in the Ministry just like his older brother. He'd start off there, maybe head to university in a bit and fulfill his dream of becoming a professor. He still hadn't chosen a subject, but his best marks were in Transfiguration and DADA, so maybe either one of those. He was most surprised that Sammy had become Head Girl - she must've been more popular than he'd realised.
As he walked to his common room after the Welcoming Feast, he couldn't stop thinking about the Quidditch team. Now that John was gone, who were they going to choose to replace him? Both he and Louis had been Assistant Captain last year, and despite their age difference it seemed that ability was clearly examined in choosing the most competent future captain, not seniority. Jack could respect that, but he still could not imagine being passed over as the next captain. It made his stomach churn.
When Jack returned to his room after the Welcoming Feast, he was thrilled and relieved to find a letter waiting for him. He scanned it quickly and immediately pounded down the stairs to find his friend.
"Louis!" he called, any animosity or rivalry forgotten. When he got his attention, Jack smiled widely at him. "Professor Taransay's written me recommending you as my AC, and I think you'll be brilliant for it. Will you do it?"

Louis had been surprised when Jack hadn’t been nominated Head Boy. He himself had voted for his fellow Aladren, Quidditch teammate, and friend. Jack was bright, friendly, and had proven himself through Quidditch. Owen was…well, Louis didn’t actually know the other boy that well, so he supposed he couldn’t really judge. Still, Jack was his friend, so he maintained that Jack should have become Head Boy.
Louis hadn’t been surprised when an excited Jack burst in, obviously having just been nominated Quidditch Captain. After the confusion that had led to a rather unorthodox situation last year, he supposed it hadn’t exactly been clear cut as to which of them would be captain. Still, Jack was older, just as capable as Louis (if not more), and Louis hated the idea of one of his friends being passed over in favour of himself. Besides, he had next year.
Frowning, he gave the impression of hesitating. “I was actually thinking of quitting Quidditch…” he started, before giving up the lie and laughing loudly. “Of course I’ll do it! This is going to be the year we get that cup back, I just know it!”
The thought of helping Jack run the Quidditch team gave Louis new enthusiasm for the year ahead. Last year’s pick-up games had been fun, but that was nothing compared to the thrill of playing for the title of Quidditch Champions! Now they just had to get together a team…
