Practicing while lost in thought by Jorge Garcia

It had been a couple of weeks now since the staff at school disappeared and the Head and Prefects took over for everything. Jorge had seen the sign posted in Cascade asking for assistance, but he hadn’t bothered putting his name down. The rest of his year thought he was a lazy person and he didn’t feel like he should bother with being told what to do by people he didn’t care one way about. So, instead, he focused on his own education. Every day, he spent studying his books. A chapter per subject, sometimes two depending on how easily he did the lesson. Potions was a challenge since he couldn’t really create them or if he did, he wasn’t sure if he created them correctly. Sometimes, if he needed further research on a subject, he would go to the library. There, he would help, if asked. He generally would help if and when asked, but he would not volunteer it. Jorge was not a bad guy. If someone tripped, he would help them up. If someone needed help, he would provide it. Despite what others thought of him, he did his best so that his parents could be proud of him.

When he wasn’t studying, he was still swimming and playing his instruments. Lately, though, with the staff gone, he was also researching his options. He was glad that the library had brochures and books on colleges and independent studies. It also offered information on RATS exams. He discovered that they do allow for homeschooled students to take exams that are offered separately than those in educational settings. He could sign up for them when he felt comfortable enough to attempt them and could take them more than once. If the staff did not return, his future would still be set… so long as they could figure out how to leave the school. If the staff did return, Jorge still had the option to not return after midterm. This thought was weighing heavily on him. He didn’t really want to return to Sonora. People here did not like him. He currently wasn’t learning anything that he wasn’t teaching himself, so it was clear that professors were not necessary and even if they were, there were tutors to help him through it. What really was the point of staying?

These thoughts were constantly on his mind. Each chapter he studied, each spell that he succeeded at doing, every lap in the pool, etc. He was constantly weighing his options. He wanted to take his RATS early because that meant he could move on from his life even sooner. He didn’t know how the RATS would work if he stayed because they were technically behind and the school board may not approve of them taking the exams due to this. He had been reviewing college programs lately too and one of them had really caught his attention. He wasn’t sure if he would make it into the program because it was all based on talents and only a select few were chosen each year, but he really thought it would be an adventure. It was a music school in Italy. His uncle had moved there a couple of years ago and was running the family restaurant that had expanded from Spain into Italy. It was their first branch ever after several centuries of success. So far, it was still making a profit. His uncle owned a nicely sized three bedroom apartment in the heart of Naples, near their restaurant. Jorge was hoping that he could stay with his uncle and help out at the restaurant until he managed to get into the school. He didn’t think his Uncle Matt would mind, but since he was a bachelor, he might think an 18 year old would cramp his style.

While he was currently thinking of how to convince his uncle to let him stay there, Jorge was working on his piano abilities. He had learned to play this instrument a long time ago. Dulce enjoyed playing with him, so he was at home with the keys. It wasn’t his first choice, that would be the drums, but he didn’t mind it so much and most people enjoyed listening to pieces from a piano more so than the drums. His headphones were over his ears to block out other sounds and his eyes were closed. His fingers danced easily across the keys while he sang softly. Dulce had performed this piece once and Jorge had really loved the sound of it. Of course, his sister had this smokey sort of voice, like she smoked three packs a day type of voice, that could really send a song over the edge and mesmerize a person. Jorge’s voice wasn’t quite as hypnotizing, but he enjoyed the artist that she had chosen.

The ballad started off slow, but as he sang and the song began to climax, his voice grew stronger and more intense to sustain the desperation of the song.
I will tell your story if you die
I will tell your story and keep you alive
The best you can
I will tell them to the children
If we have some, if we have some
That I’ve always fel the feeling we would die young
Some die young. Some die young

It wasn’t a really happy song, but it wasn’t a despressing either. It was about love and staying strong and being there. They had something to hold on too. Promises to keep. All of that. The desperation came during the chorus when he begged to not let go. He thought it was a beautiful song. Soft yet emotional.

Some die young
But you better hold on
So many things I need to say to you
Please don’t
(don’t let
me go)
don’t let
me go
And we said we would die together
You said we would die

When the piece slowly died away, Jorge moved onto another piece. He wanted to get in as much practice as he could. He didn’t know what the program would require of him. It took him a moment to realize that there was someone else in the room and he turned to look at them. He didn’t pause in his playing, unconcerned by the other person, figuring they wanted music time too. He acknowledge them with a nod, but offered nothing more.

OOC: The song is ‘Some Die Young’ and Jorge’s version is by Gavin Mikhail
