Doing a bit of research. [tag: Farrah] by Madeleine Dautin

Farrah was cute. But in the experienced Flora Deschamps’ experience, cute always hid evil.

That didn’t mean that Madeleine wasn’t nice to her adorable appearing roommate. And besides, most of the time neither Farrah nor Arianna were even suspects, it was just that occasionally the both of them gave off this rather…murderous vibe. Madeleine didn’t know if it was the way Farrah took to wearing those strangely pattern garments or the way Arianna always primped herself even before a Quidditch match, but Madeleine was certain that neither witch could be considered…normal.

But normal wasn’t necessarily a good thing either, Madeleine reminded herself as she remembered the endlessly boring conversations over the winter break she’d had with witches who were what her parents called “normal.” And each witch had at least one redeeming factor about her. Farrah was friends with Killian Everett who was most definitely not boring at all and Arianna…well Madeleine was sure there was something good about Arianna. It was too bad she had decided to hate her for all eternity, really, Madeleine thought, because she thought they could have been friends if the poor thing would just mind her place a bit more.

Luckily that afternoon was one in which the Aladren Quidditch team was practising for their upcoming match against Pecari. Madeleine knew that the Aladren Quidditch team was supposed to have been the best at the school. Out of the past six years of championships they had won four—Pecari had won one and the other had been a year in which Quidditch was cancelled. All success was pointed towards Clark Dill, a muggleborn, but one who was obscenely talented on a broom. She was glad that it was Pecari they were playing against—she didn’t want to have to deal with an ill-tempered Bastien, and especially glad that it meant Arianna was still needed at practise which gave Madeleine ample time in the dorm alone or with Farrah.

“Say,” she said casually to Farrah as she worked through a a verb chart. Since private English lessons were no longer a luxury she could have, she afforded an hour a day to both English and Italian, not wanting to fall behind the other noblesse children who she was certain made incredible strides in their language abilities at the far superior Beauxbatons. Leo, for example, had come away from his first year speaking rather basic Spanish since the French academy accepted students from Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain in addition to it’s French population. “Have you ever been to Finland?”

On Finland? by Farrah Welsh

Over the holiday break, her mother had helped teach her how to do a French braid on herself. Since Farrah couldn’t use a curling iron at school or knew any of the charms in order to make her hair curly, she was trying to find an alternative hair style that she could wear to the formal Ball at the end of the year. A French braid was something she always wore to her family’s more formal parties that they either hosted or were invited to but not so formal where she would have to wear a super fancy dress. She thought that if she added some sort of ribbon to her hair that matched her dress, it might look more formal than just a simple French braid and work for a ball.

Since break, Farrah sometimes practiced her braiding skills to make sure she could still do it. Today was one of those days. She had already finished all of her homework and read a couple of chapters in her new series that she had been given for Christmas (she was reading it slowly to make sure it lasted until the end of the school year) so she had time to kill before she was to meet up with Georgia for dinner. It was as good a time as any to practice her braid.

The room was rather quiet since Madeleine was working on her studies and Arianna was off working on her Quidditch sport thing that Farrah did not understand. Farrah didn’t mind her French roommate. She wasn’t necessarily warm to her, but she wasn’t cold either and that was something that Farrah could live with. She honestly hoped that it would become something on more of a friendship level, but she knew better than to push her luck with that.

She looked up from her desk which was currently housing her small vanity mirror that she was using to see herself as she did the braid to where Madeleine was sitting. She looked confused for a moment by the question. Finland? What a strange thing to ask someone. “No, not Finland. I haven’t been anywhere across the Atlantic. Just to the Caribbean.” Farrah stated. “I hope to go someday, though. Traveling always sounds fun to do.” Farrah gave her roommate a bright smile. “Are you going there? Or have you been there?” She asked. Farrah always assumed that Europeans traveled around their countries on the regular, but that could have just been a rumor that she read on the internet.

Yes, it would seem to be so. by Madeleine

’Suspect denies any previous knowledge of Finland,’ Flora noted with scepticism as the hair-braiding witch talked. ‘Attempts to engage in small talk, do not fall for it, she is simply trying to distract from the larger problem at hand, I repeat, do not engage with suspect, do not—’

Madeleine beamed. The Caribbean sounded like a lovely place to travel but she hadn’t had the opportunity to leave the continent much. “No, I haven’t,” she admitted. “We always go to the South of France for our summers and sometimes we go to Switzerland in the winter, but usually not.” Throughout the year her parents occasionally took romantic getaways, sometimes without the other one, but Madeleine was never allowed to go with them. Maman had promised that one day she would meet a nice, rich wizard who might take her to Italy but that for now she was required to remain home with her studies and the governess.

This pattern had always seemed normal to Madeleine but now that she said it out loud she supposed it did sound rather sad in comparison to the American who had gone to the Caribbean whereas Madeleine had barely left her own country. “Everyone goes to the South of France,” she continued, implying that anyone who was anything took their summers on the warm beaches and salty waters of the Mediterranean. “It’s all got to do with networking. Anyway, one day I’ll go to Finland. And Itlay, for the matter.”

Indeed it was the promise her mother had made her that caused Madeleine to choose Italian as her ‘extra’ language. “What was the Caribbean like?” She had always taken a light interest in the things Farrah had to say, Madeleine thought. She was polite and asked after her roommate’s day and when her roommate wore something nice she was always sure to compliment her, and she would confer on certain homework assignments—no matter if she was guilty or not, Farrah had still been sorted into Aladren, but if Madeleine was a totally unbiased spectator of the room, she would have to admit that this was the first time she had sounded one hundred percent, genuinely interested in something Farrah had to say.

What a strange topic to bring up. by Farrah

Farrah was quite surprised to hear that Madeleine hadn’t really travelled all over Europe. Perhaps it was just a misconception she had from movies that led her to believe that Europeans travelled between countries as regularly as she had gone to the local library. Or maybe it was too many episodes of Dr. Who and she just took that to mean that the British enjoyed travelling a lot. Madeleine obviously wasn’t British but France was close enough in Farrah’s mind to link her into that train of thought. She obviously didn’t know what was so different in the South of France than in the rest of France, but she supposed that just meant some light reading in the library about France.

Farrah also didn’t understand why anyone would need to be networking in the South of France, but she supposed it was probably similar to people going to the Hamptons for their summers or skiing or something. Farrah’s parents made plenty of money (her dad being a Vet and owning his own clinic helped with that) to where they were living rather comfortably and she didn’t feel like she was poor in comparison to her friends (most were the children of doctors and lawyers or CEOs), but they had never considered ever visiting the Hamptons.

“It was hot and sticky.” Farrah replied. Due to her father’s red hair and their own paler complexion, the sun wasn’t always their friend. Her sister had red hair and freckles like their father, so she had it worse than Farrah but the sun was hard on her either way. Her mom loved the heat though. She always obtained a lovely tan whenever they were on vacation. “But the water was absolutely perfect and was this amazing blue green color. Not like the gross murky brown color that the ocean back home is.” Farrah replied, smiling as she remembered her trip. “I got to swim with a dolphin and we went to this tourist spot where you can swim with stingrays! It was so cool!” They had pictures of both events that hung on the wall back home. “What’s in the South of France?” She asked her roommate.
