There were two new Quidditch Captains this year, which meant there were two new Assistant Captains. Three, technically, since Daniel was now added to the Aladren set because of Jera's grade skipping and imminent graduation. But her own Crotalus was one of the Houses that graduated a captain, promoted an assistant, and needed a new one through the normal course of team evolution.
And so, shortly after the students were due to return from their first day of classes, a school owl was waiting for Charlie Abbott. The letter inside the envelope marked with her full name read:
Dear Captain Charlotte Abbott,
Congratulations on your promotion to Captain! To assist you in running the team this year, and in preparation of continuing Crotalus's fine performance in the years to come, Marissa Stephenson is being appointed as your assistant captain. Please let her know and teach her the ropes.
Good luck this year, Coach Pierce

Charlie read the note from the Coach over twice, partly to double check she'd read the name right, and partly just because it was so short and reading it just once hadn't taken very long at all. There'd been no reason for Charlie to do a double-take on Marissa's name other than wanting to be quite sure; the fourth year was a good Seeker and had been punctual and reliable at practises, steadily improving since she'd joined the Crotalus team. More than that, she was the only other girl on the team.
Eager to let her new assistant know of the position, Charlie took up her quill, turned over the note from Coach Pierce, and scribbled a short message on the back: 'Marissa - Girl Power! Meet me on the pitch before try-outs. Charlie.' If the younger girl was in any doubt of the meaning, she could always turn the paper over and read the initial missive.
Before she delivered the short message to her new assistant, Charlie decided to put together a sign-up sheet, too. It might be hard to get a team together this year, now her brother and his girlfriend had graduated, leaving two open spots on the team. Oliver'd been Chaser for seven years - Charlie had no idea how that would affect Crotalus' performance.
A few minutes later, the sign-up sheet was finished. Charlie went first to the fourth year's dormitory, but on finding it empty, simply left the note on Marissa's bed (it wasn't as if she had roomates who might remove it in her absence) and continued down to the commons to post the sign-up sheet.
