Welcome to the Crotalus Commons by Professor Sadi Powell

Having collected the new first year Crotalus students in the Cascade Hall, Sadi led them through the school, pausing every so often to let the stragglers catch up. She eventually came to a halt part way along a corridor, pausing right outside the portrait of Gunter the Zombie.

“I am about to reveal to you the location of your House commons,” she told the assembled students. “You are not to divulge this information to any student from another house, nor are you permitted to enter other house commons, so do not bother to ask.” Sadi turned her attention to the portrait behind her; the inhabitant was dribbling and making an assortment of odd sounds in a rather grotesque manner. “This is the portrait of Gunter the Zombie,” she informed the first years. “You must submit the password, and you will be granted entry to the commons. The current password is ferreus opus.”

At her words, the portrait swung open, as if on hinges, to reveal the entrance to the commons. “Follow me, please,” Sadi said, before stepping through.

Once inside the common room, which was decorated in the house shades of red and silver, Sadi waited for the rest of the students to join her before addressing the group once more. “This is your house common room, the place you will spend a vast proportion of your time here at Sonora. There you will see a stairway” (she indicated it) “to the dormitories. Girls take the hallway to the right, boys to the left. Girls are not allowed into boys’ dormitories and vice versa. There are charms in place to prevent any student from breaking this rule, so you would be unwise to try.” Sadi was not a strict professor by nature, but if she was going to be stern about anything, it was likely to be keeping to the rules.

“You are to be in your dormitories by ten o’clock each night, no exceptions. You are expected to wear your uniform to all lessons, unless your subject tutor has given you explicit permission not to.” Her voice relaxed a little as she continued, now that the rules had been established.

“Should you need me, my office is through this door,” Sadi paused to gesture towards the aforementioned entrance. “Your house prefects are Miss Chrissy Mathers, Miss Jordanna Howard and Miss Lila St Martin; they should be available to assist you with any problems you may have throughout the course of the year. The House Quidditch captain is Miss Jennifer Zucchero, and the assistant captain is Mister Geoffrey Spindler, but please remember that first year students are not permitted to sign up for Quidditch.” Sadi thought she had covered everything, and so paused her speech. “Does anyone have any questions?”

I do feel welcome, thank you by Sophia Xuereb

Sophia was, quite sadly, one of the stragglers. It wasn't that she intended to be rude by not following properly - she was never rude if it could be at all helped - she was just trying to make sure that she recalled the way to go, so she was paying extra special attention to her surroundings. There was quite a lot to take in about Sonora Academy, and just as much that would require much consideration and thinking about.

The final time she found the group ahead of her standing still they were in front of a most unusual portrait. It appeared to be a Zombie, and, unless she was very much mistaken - and, to be sure she paused after Professor Powell had given them the password and had led the others in, to listen to his mutterings - he was speaking some variation of German. Probably. Very probably. Sophia made a mental note to do some research on the subject to find out more about the Crotalus Common's guard.

She looked around the room carefully whilst the Head of House continued her speech, trying to take everything in. Red and Silver was an interesting combination to have chosen. Usually it was Red and Gold - often royal colours - or Silver and Blue - which also got the royal treatment often enough - but this was definitely a different idea happening. She wondered if there was further precident, and added it to her list of things to follow up on. Perhaps there was a good reason for Crotalus having that combination, and, if there was, she would learn of it.

The rules at least were quite straight forward. They made sense and were not too restrictive, which was as it should be. The consequences of breaking said rules were not explained in quite as much detail as she would have liked though.

Once the speech was definitely finished (the 'Does anyone have any questions?' seemed to indicate that) Sophia, having had enough time to come up with her questions lifted a hand for attention from the Professor, and to indicate that she had a question.

"Professor, what happens if the rules are not adhered to?" she asked. She had no intention of breaking them herself, but a full knowledge of the situation never hurt, and, indeed, often helped far more than a partial knowledge. "And - sorry to ask two questions, Professor - but you mentioned we can't sign up for Quidditch. Are their any extra-curricular activities that Students can participate in?"

I'm very pleased to hear it by Professor Powell

Inevitably, new students always had questions needing to be answered. Although Sadi strove to cover the most basic of information in her welcome, she couldn’t possibly provide the first years with all the knowledge they required, hence her invitation for them to ask questions.

The first query of the year was submitted by a girl. Sadi listened patiently while two questions were asked, and thought silently for a short moment before answering. “Rule-breaking is taken quite seriously at Sonora,” she began, “though the consequence will often depend on the seriousness of the offence. Punishments might include loss of House points, detention, or suspension of privileges for any period of time.” In her career at Sonora, Sadi had never once issued any of these punishments, and she had no reason to suspect that she would need to in the future; generally her House were incredibly well behaved. “Repeated rule-breaking will lead to a meeting with your Head of House, or possibly the Headmaster himself.”

“As for activities out of class, I believe there are a range of opportunities for first years students. I believe there exists a charms club, and an informal soccer club, and a creative writing event later in the year. Unfortunately I cannot tell you more about these, as they are student-organised groups. If you speak to one of the prefects I’m sure they’d be happy to help.” Deciding that now was as good a time as any to introduce the idea, Sadi added, “If you would like to start your own club or group you are free to discuss it with me. The remainder of your free time is yours to spend as you please, in the gardens, library, or your common rooms.”

“Are there any more questions?”

I'm pleased that you are pleased by Sophia

Sophia nodded slowly as Professor Powell answered her questions, expanding on the two things that had been notably lacking - in her point of view - from the original speech. She considered the clubs mentioned. Charms had some merit to it and might be worthwhile looking into. The soccer club less so. And as for the creative writing event, there was plenty of time to consider the virtues of it, if it was later in the year.

The idea of starting up her own club was also intriguing. Thoughts ticked over in her mind and she considered and discarded or put them aside for further consideration. Distracted by these thoughts, she almost forgot her manners again, but recalled them in time to a relatively quick "Thank you, Professor," before anyone else could come up with a question of their own. She looked around, not taking quite so much in this time, and moved to a nearby seat, slipping into it while she continued to think while also keeping half an ear out for any further information that might prove forthcoming.

A club of her own. What would be a worthwhile pursuit that could and indeed would be of interest to others? There was little to no point in having a club that no one else would join. And really, she considered further, it might be better if she could come up with something that someone else might run, because she wasn't sure that she was really leadership material. Perhaps she could discuss options with Amelia later, in the dorm. The other girl appeared to have energy and enthusiasm to spare, not to mention her penchant for talking which would come in very handy when running a meeting. Sophia, on the other hand was more inclined towards the philosophy that you learnt more when your mouth wasn't open than if it was flapping in the wind, and learning more was a very important pursuit to her. But what would be worthwhile and provoke enough interest in Amelia that she would agree to lead it? And would attract others? Well, it seemed that there were plenty of things about this that would require extra careful thought.\r\n\r\n
