It wasn't that he was blind, or stupid even. There had been plenty of evidence that Jennifer had a thing going with that older Teppenpaw boy Jake but... he'd just kinda figured that it wasn't going to go anywhere. But it had been ongoing for a while now. Quite a while. And now he'd blown his chance - they were going to the ball together.
Geoffrey slumped down on his bed and then rolled over so he could pull his pillow over his head.
What chance? There never had been. She didn't see him like that, she just saw his as some stupid kid to pat on the head when he did well on the pitch and then nothing of until the next practice or match. He'd just read too much into it.
He was so stupid!
It wasn't like he hadn't been warned either. His cousin had even commented about Jennifer and Jake and how Geoff would be lucky to get a look in. He could imagine his mother's expression and her words to him if she ever found out what he had been thinking. 'You? You really expected a pureblood girl like that would ever be interested in a disgusting, fat blood-traitor like yourself?' It almost made him forget that he wasn't fat anymore.
His growth spurt, time on the pitch when at school and outside time with Stephen and the boys during holidays had seen that seem to melt off. Of course, he'd been warned, it was possible that a lot would come back once his growth spurt was done with, unless he kept to healthy food intake levels.
Geoffrey hadn't binge-eaten in a while, but he felt sorely tempted now. Cake and chocolate and... Merlin! Anything edible would make him feel better right now.
He could feel tears coming now too, and it made him feel even worse. He wasn't a crybaby, not like Adam. She was just a stupid girl and it was just a stupid dance and ... he pulled the pillow tighter, trying to stop the tears in their tracks.
He didn't know how he was going to face her at practice after making such a stupid fool of himself. His stomach made a noise, indicating it's interest in his earlier thought, and that decided him. Pushing the pillow aside and wiping his face with his hands he sat back up.
If he was going to eat, he'd have to be fast. She had looked like she was going to be in the Library for a while yet, but things could change. Either way, an early dinner seemed advisable. And early dinner of everything he could manage before retreating again.
He stumbled back up to his feet and made his way to the dorm door. There Geoffrey paused to take several deep breaths and be sure he was in control. Control, that was what was important. He was such an idiot. Such a stupid, stupid idiot.
Another breath and he opened the door. He made his way back across the room slower than his last passage, but fast enough to discourage anyone who wanted to talk to him. He didn't notice it, but as he peered along the passage out, to be sure she wasn't heading in, he had even taken up his old customary stance. Shoulders hunched, trying to seem as small as possible, which was even harder now that he was getting quite tall.
She wasn't there. It was safe.
Geoffrey's stomach complained mildly and he nodded. Food. That would make this all better.
