The Common Room Blues by Danielle Johansen

Staring into the fire, Danielle was deep in thought. Her white-blonde curls had fallen into her large blue eyes, and her tanned skin stood out in comparison to the red and silver that surrounded her. For years, she'd been idolized by others for her unique beauty. In truth? Danielle was nothing without her brother. Nothing at all.

The memories still came back to her, even now, when Bradley had killed himself that summer. It had been the middle of June, and he'd been spending more time than ever with the little Muggle girl, Emily, babysitting her. She was six or seven years old - Danielle couldn't really remember which - and Bradley... He liked her. A lot.

It wasn't his fault that his hormones were greater than most! Bradley was just the same as anyone else. He was just... He raped a Muggle girl, and was sent to jail. Oh, her own brother! They were closer than anything, and Dani couldn't bear to think what would've happened if he hadn't called her that night by use of the telephone.

"Hello?" Danielle had answered that dreary night of June 23, her eyes groggy and tired. "You've reached the Johansen residence."

"Shut it, Dan," the voice hissed at her. She knew... she knew it could only be him. Bradley. In jail. "I need to talk to you."

"After you screwed up everything, you mean?" Danielle said sarcastically in reply. At the time, she hadn't understood anything about her brother. Nothing. "Shoot."

"I didn't mean to," Bradley replied in a solemn tone. "I don't know what took hold of me..." And after that, Danielle could only hear gagging on the other line. She started to shout for her parents, fearing that some other inmate was trying to kill her brother - but when they wouldn't come out of their bedroom because of their sheer 'pleasures' in each other, Danielle was forced to escape on her own.

She'd shown up at the jail a few minutes later, having used her parents' floo powder. They'd always told her not to use it, but she did anyway, disrespecting their wishes. Her parents were the ones that wanted her to become a Death Eater, the ones that expected her not to graduate from college. It was pathetic.

And that was when she'd saw it. The body. It was draped in blood, and that image would be one that Danielle Johansen would never forget.

She'd cried herself to sleep that night.

Back to reality, Danielle glanced around the room and felt herself grow stiff in the shoulders. There were so many things that she could've said to make her brother feel better about what he'd done, and she'd screwed up everything.

God, she was hungry.\n\n

TJ O'Riley

Watching by TJ O'Riley

TJ's eyes narrowed as he watched the girl near the fireplace. The girl had attended some of his parents parties, and although he was mostly surrounded by the adults, he had caught glimses of her now and then. The only problem with that, was that he couldn't for the life of him remember her name. He would have thought he'd remember the combination of tan skin and blond hair. However, the name still alluded him.

He looked down to make sure that his robes were still flawless, and his shirt unruffled. He slicked back his hair and walked forward, just in time to see the girls shoulders stiffen and he stopped. Was there something about the way he dressed that offended her in some way? Her eyes didn't look at him, so was sure it wasn't himself who caused the stress. He walked forward again and landed gracefully on a chair across from her.

"I'm TJ from the O'Riley family." He nodded slightly with pride in his family. "I've seen you at some pureblood parties, but I can't for the life of me remember your name. My apologies." He smiled and held out a hand. \n\n

Unsure by Danielle Johansen

She could tell that there was someone else in the room with her, but she supposed that feeling should be mutual to her by now. Danielle had been having feelings like that since Bradley's death, and frankly, it terrified her. But, as she'd always been stubborn, the girl would only shake it off, pretend not to have felt it.

But it was then that a boy stepped out of the darkness, and she didn't bother to smile. Danielle wasn't one of those girls that felt like she had to look her best whenever a member of the opposite sex entered the room. No, she'd been considered to be beautiful even when she tried not to be. Honestly, she couldn't stand it. It wasn't like she had a golden personality either, and others seemed to think opposite. Sometimes it got awfully annoying.

So she didn't try to mask her features, and she raised her eyebrows as the boy looked over at her. But as he held out his hand, she offered a small smile. "Danielle Johansen," she started, unsure about holding out her hand or not. Finally, she shakily held it out. "I think I remember you."

Whether that was the truth or not, it seemed to be the right thing to say. "Your robes are off-center," she said stubbornly, but it soon faded with a grin. "But that's okay."\n\n

boredom... by Arixios Jackel

Arixios was bored and so far his day had been completely unproductive except for the brief chat he'd had with two of the ladies from his own commons.

Other than that, he'd just spent a good fifteen minutes forced to listen to a complete hypocrite attempting to drive him deaf.

Ari told himself to take a couple deep breaths. It wouldn't do for him to lose control.

Recognizing the boy sitting off in the corner of the common room with another girl as the same one who Sally and her friend had the argument with in Cascade he smirked and made his way over.

So far he'd had pretty good luck with the people from his own house and, judging from what he knew of the boy Arixios could assume he was a pureblood and seemed to have a head on his shoulders.

He slowed his steps as he neared their end of the common room to give them time to wrap up any and all private conversations.

Arixios really didn't wish to intrude on a private conversation but he figured it couldn't be that secret if they were sitting in the common room talking and therefore proceeded forward.

After all, he was curious to meet these two.

TJ looked downwards in surprise and realized that Danielle was indeed right. They were slightly off center, and that was not proper, especially in the presence of another pureblood like himselft. He stood up and with a brief twist, the robes settled in their right positions.

"That was unnacceptable, my apologies..." He contemplated whether calling her by first or last name, but as they were in the same house he decided to go the less formal route. " Danielle." He smiled again and sat back down.

He looked upward and saw another boy watching them from afar. Arixios Jackel. TJ had a head for names, and would remember them after being told. It was helpful in these first few days where nobody knew anyone. Which was why it was so confusing that he hadn't remember Danielles name.

He motioned the boy over and glanced at another first year writing a letter. She looked completely absorbed in her writing so he decided not to bother her.

Time for a little first week reunion.

Danielle looked up, her rebellious blonde hair striking her right eye, as TJ began to speak again. She found him to be quite a decent person, if not a bit snobby, but Danielle had already decided to leave that factor alone. Rumors didn't solve anything - she knew of that first-hand, when her brother had been talked about by the Muggles constantly. It was a terrible thing to think about, really.

She watched intently as the boy fixed his robes, and this set a small smile aflame to her rather pale lips. They were narrow, small as most of her body tended to be. "It's fine," she muttered, remembering with a start that she had always pointed out the negative things in meeting new people.

Danielle glanced up and her eyes caught sight of another boy that she had yet to meet. Not one to say hello first, the girl simply watched him with curious eyes, always having been somewhat of a people-watcher. "So, my assumption is that you're a Pureblood?" She asked TJ, trying her best to start up conversation. \n\n

A lovely manner. by Danielle

Danielle put on a slight smile in hesitation as the boy walked over to them. She'd always been a bit nervous around new people, however much she tried to hide it behind her various stubborn personalities that, when cracked, would disable her entire system of living. If that mask were ever broken to reveal Danielle's shaky stability, others would be able to see her pain. They would see her there, in fits of tears, too afraid now to commit to anything that could possibly hurt her. That was the true Danielle Johansen, after losing her dearest brother only months ago.

But now wasn't the time for such nonsense. She brushed it away without a second thought, cleared her throat, and held out her hand with an authority that she'd been born with. "Danielle Johansen," she said with a narrow and sly smile playing upon her lips. \n\n

Jenna Howard

Feeling Free to Join In by Jenna Howard

Jenna checked her appearance in the mirror. It was something her mother always made sure she did before leaving her room, and it had become a habit ever since. . As for her brown hair, well it wasn't messy, just damp and wavy as it framed her face. Her robes were neat, without a crease. And the pearly white colored symbol of the Howards, the head of a bald eagle with a proud capital "H" to the left was sewn onto her robes. The house elves had sewn them on just the day before she left for school. As if she wanted everyone to know she came from high society. She sighed, and headed down to the common room.

Going down the stairs, she began to sing. She didn't know why, but the sky was blue, and the weather was good, and it made her want to sing. Her high soprano voice was almost the only thing her parents praised her for, but she didn't sing often. Especially in front of others.

This is why she gave a small blush when upon entering the Common Room, she found three other first years already there. Two boys and a girl, the girl apparently just introducing herself. Barely able to keep her composure, Jenna approached them. "Good day, my fellows, and how do you do?" she greeted smoothly, just the way her mother had taught her. Hopefully, they wouldn't mention her singing.\n\n

it really is a reunion... by Chrissy

Chrissy had finally finished her letter to her mother. She described in detail her adventures of last night and of the day. She smiled happily as she looked it over.

She looked up at the sound of singing, her curls whirling softly around her head. She spotted Jenna exiting the stairs, but it was evident that Jenna hadn't seen her. Instead, Jenna headed over to the others in the room.

Chrissy sighed. By now she was used to being invisible. It hadn't ever bothered her. Well, except when it was her friends that looked through her. She frowned as she watched them all make introductions.

She looked back down at her letter and she could hear her family's voices in her head. They would want her to make friends with all of them. They would want her to be a perfect little pureblood and do the family justice. It infuriated her to have to follow those rules.

Chrissy was a Mathers though. One of the most well-known pureblood family and she had duties that she was destined to do. Sometimes she thought it would be easier to be a mixture of a pureblood and a muggleborn, that way, she would always be excepted somewhere.

But sadly, she was not. She was raised 'Pure' and 'Clean' and was expected to marry someone who was the same as her to continue with the family honor or else, risk being thrown out. Even her parents would have to turn their backs on her and they loved her more than life itself. But they had rules to follow, games to play.

She sighed once more and folded up her letter carefully before standing. She wasn't sure if she was ready to talk to them yet. Arixios had been nice to her and Jenna was her friend, but she wasn't sure of the others. If she could just stay invisible maybe....\n\n

Newcomers... by Danielle

Danielle felt her shoulders loosen only slightly as she heard the sound of singing. It was a lovely voice, high and clear, just like a bell ringing in the holiday snow. It brought that sort of warmth to the room, and for that it made the blonde-haired girl smile, her hair cascading just slightly into gray eyes.

She didn't have a bad singing voice either, but Danielle never sang for anyone. She couldn't take the pressure. Oh, sure, there were days long ago when Danielle Johansen was one of the few girls courageous enough to sing her heart out in front of hundreds of people, back in her childhood, when her parents had assumed she would become a singer. Danielle was an alto singer, and preferred jazz over anything else, but she would never admit that she could sing. Why, for years she had pretended to be unable when around her friends and family, just to avoid the hesitation she knew that she would be drawn to - like a fly in a spider's web.

She'd never really been good at meeting new people, but for some reason, others seemed to obey Danielle's every whim. She was a sweet girl at heart, really, despite her cruel nature. How could she show that side to others, after all, being born of 'clean' blood? It was just another food chain. You had to show the others who was important and who wasn't.

"Hey," she said with a hesitated smile, hair dangling in her eyes as it often did. "I'm Danielle, and you are?" Looking over at TJ, a small curl appeared at the tips of her lips, and our fiesty heroine simply winked. It was a simple gesture of secrets, something Danielle had always prided herself on.

Her looks, however, were not.

Danielle was possibly one of the most attractive girls of her year. With a vast combination of olive skin and luscious blanche-blonde hair, there was rarely a time when one didn't think of the girl as, well, lovely. But the thing that annoyed her most? They couldn't see past the appearance. For so long, she'd never been taken seriously.

There was her 'mother' (although not really, but she hadn't really understood why), the woman going through her midlife-crisis, trying to find a way to become hip again. With her dark brown curls and slowly approaching wrinkles, she was nothing to look at that acknowledgingly. Then there was her father, with the same chilling hair color as herself. But her skin tone? It was almost Italian, if one were to look closely. Bradley, he'd been the same, before having committed suicide. His shaggy blonde hair had only just dangled into his eyes, having been identical twins with Danielle.

It was hard for her to think about, so she set her mind aside.

Re: Newcomers... by Jenna Howard

Jenna was glad that no one had mentioned her singing, at least not yet. She still couldn't see what had possibly come over her. But now she was here, in the common room, with three people she didn't know very well. Oh sure, she could place names to all of their faces, but that doesn't count. She could only hope that they couldn't see she really would rather be anywhere else. But, as she always had the strange suspicion that her mother used the family emblem on her robes as a spying device, she had no way out of it.

"My name is Jenna Howard, daughter of Atticus Howard," she introduced herself. It was how she had been trained to introduce herself, and she was too afraid to not do as she had been told if her parents might be watching. A muggleborn reporter for a magical newspaper once compared Atticus Howard to a muggle named Donald Trump, if clarification is needed.

"And over there," Jenna added loudly, so that there was no doubt Chrissy could hear, "is my friend, Chrissy Mathers. Won't you join us, Chrissy?"\n\n

Thanks a bunch by Chrissy

CRAP! Chrissy thought in a panic. Leave it to Jenna to spot her. She then proceeded to call Jenna every name she could think of before plastering a perfectly striaght white teethed smile in their direction.

Her smiled was fake, but it was one she wore well. Not to say she was a snob, she just wasn't prepared quite yet for a conversation as the one that was bound to come with these four.

Chrissy walked slowly up to them, her perfect blonde curls swaying as she walked and her blue-eyes shining. No matter what she did to her hair it always came out looking herfect. It rather irritated her so because Tally always made fun of it. Chrissy silently cursed her mother who had given her a potion to make her hair turn out as it did when she was ten.

Finally reaching them, and throwing the tiniest of looks in Jenna's directions, Chrissy looked around at the other three.

"Hello, nice to meet you all. Oh, and by the way, Jenna, lovely singing." She smiled wickedly at her before turning her attention to Arixios, "Always good to see you Arixios." She then turned her attention to the other two and nodded politely to them.

Well, this is going to be interesting, Chrissy thought. \n\n

Jenna couldn't help but surpress her smile. She smiled partly out of the embaressment of having her singing brought up, and partly out of amusement. Chrissy obviously didn't want to be here. But Jenna wasn't feeling quite comfortable as well, none of the other three seemed to feel like talking very much, aside from Danielle. And if Jenna was going to be in an awkward silence, better to be with a friend. Misery likes company, as the saying goes. But Jenna wasn't exactly miserable, just uncomfortable.

"So," she started, "how do you all like school?" She sighed. A very parental-like question to ask, in her opinion, but it was a start.\n\n

Nice, real nice by Chrissy

Chrissy couldn't help the laugh that escaped her when Jenna asked that question. It reminded her of the many times her father had tried to start a conversation, but they both knew it was way to awkward to actually have a decent one.

She quickly sat down in one of the chairs and looked around at the others. She took in all their looks with easy glances in their direction. She imagined what they would be like by the time they were seventh years.

Would they look the same? Have subtle changes? Would they look completely different? Would their personalities be better or worse? All these thoughts of them ran through her head. She knew these next few years of thier lives would shape them in their future. These years would determine which side they would choose. Would they continue on with the traditions of the Pureblood families or decide to be bold and leave that world forever?

Turning to Jenna with a smile she said,

"Schools been great. Nice people and such. Crazy wars though." She paused for a moment with a frown, "Er-the prank wars and such is what I meant." She didn't blush or lower her eye contact with any of them. She knew she just stumbled over her words, but the rule was to never show it. And so she didn't.\n\n

Pranks by TJ

"I'm TJ from the O'Riley family." He stood up as a curtesy for the girls when they came over, and then sat down again. He his eyes narrowed briefly. Well dressed and spoken, pureblood, and perfectly acceptable from what he could see.

Not bad.

His impression on the school changed slightly. Nothing dramatic, just enough that he wasn't going to write a letter home quite yet. No, not quite.

Although this business about pranking was distasteful to say the least. It was juvinile. TJ could think of much more... mature ways make another student miserable. Pranking was like Defense Against Dark Arts, useless, and unreliable.

As for the school.

"The schools a bit below standards. People of all statures and talents are walking through the Great Hall as if they owned the place although I suppose it will do. The food is praiseworthy." He tapped his fingers lightly against the chair and then looked up at Chrissy and Jenna quizzically.

"Have I met you before?" \n\n

Chrissy's face remained expressionless while T.J. spoke about these 'substandard' people who roam the school. She even prevented herself from rolling her eyes.

So everything she had heard and knew of this guy had been correct. He was, in essence, everything his family claimed to be. And the perfect specimen for marriage as her Grandmother would say.

At being addressed, Chrissy flicked her curls away from her face and smiled politely at him. Well, at least he recognizes me, Chrissy thought,

"Actually, we have." Chrissy wasn't one who denied or lied, whether he remembered her or not. "Well, at least our families have met." Chrissy furrowed her brows in thought for a moment, "At one of the parties, I believe. I had to attend it, of course. So, I'm sure that's where I know you from as well." She nodded her head to him with small smile as she watched him. At least he's well-mannered, she thought.\n\n

Arixios inwardly rolled his eyes at the tailored, polite smiles everyone was wearing. It was almost enough to make him scream, blast paint from his wand, or something equally shocking - just to make a statement.

Almost, but not quite.

He wondered what everyone was truly thinking, wouldn't it be amusing if everyone actually said what they thought for once...

He tuned back into the conversation as he heard T.J. mention pranks. At this Arixios openly smirked.

Distasteful they may be, yes, but what if no one ever found out that it was you who'd done the prank? In his opinion it had to be subtle, something nobody would notice right away.

Pouring ice water on someone was juvenile. Casting a charm so that their teeth would get unpleasantly chilled whenever they ate grapes was an art form.

What was it his father always told him? Ah yes.

She knew that at some point in the future, Arixios would show his true colors and he would either disappoint Chrissy or make her giddy with glee.

She was hoping for the latter.

"I'm sorry, Arixios, but what's all about timing?"

Arixios leaned back into the chair he was occupying and turned his head more towards Chrissy's direction. Another of his father's teachings, always look at the person you're speaking to.

"Everything Chrissy, everything." He drawled out

Arixios didn't usually listen very closely to his fathers lectures when he was younger. Being of a creative disposition, he soon developed a knew method of teaching things to his son.

Arixios made sure to learn things a lot quicker after that.

Pulling out his wand, Arixios lazily twirled the stick of wood about to occupy his hands before continuing.

"A simple example; if one wishes to escape from a social function, perhaps, one must first gently ease oneself from the surrounding conversation, wait until a new topic has been introduced and then very casually and quietly sound the retreat."

Arixios calmly placed his wand back into his cloak pocket and folded his hands in his lap and he felt his features soften momentarily as he glanced about the group.

Over-all, not a bad turn-out for Crotalus. He could name houses who had done a lot worse with their sorting.

Re: I'm sorry, what? by Danielle

Danielle had been quite quiet for the past few minutes as the girls blabbed about themselves and everyone else started a new topic: pranks. She'd never been too fond of them, but maybe that was because of her circumstances. Bradley was a definite prankster, one that would curse a teacher if given the chance. The mere thought of her brother put a smile on her face, and as she turned to the other students, her eyes were now wider, more open to their opinions. She was sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest in that little chair, but it didn't make much of a difference, because she was little too. Her hair was by now back in a ponytail, little white-blonde strands of hair just barely peeking out from the collar of her robes.

She turned her attention to a boy in the corner, Arixios, or so the others claimed. He seemed... different. Rubbing her forehead, Danielle looked over at him with curiosity. "That's an interesting philosophy, I suppose," Danielle replied, though her interest had indeed drifted from the topic, she was eager to talk - to anyone. "But in the case that the center of attention is yourself, getting out of such situations can prove to be extremely difficult."

Danielle had always known herself to be smart - well, schoolwise, anyway - but one of her premium flaws was that of her true personality, one that she never revealed. It was too risky, too dangerous to let others know that she wasn't completely cruel and horrible. Because that set a weakness, and the weak don't survive in the real world.\n\n

it's over-rated anyway... by Chrissy

Chrissy sat with a slight frown evident on her face. Small talk was boring for her. Frankly, she didn't care for it at all, but it was necessary in this world and any other world. Especially if you wanted to know the other person.

She found Arixios to be odd. He wasn't like any other eleven year old boy she had ever met. She suppose that would go for T.J. as well, though he hadn't spoken very much.

Now her attention lay on Danielle. Chrissy, being a small girl herself, not even 5 feet tall yet and most likely wouldn't grow past that, noticed that this girl was small too as she scrunched herself into a ball in the chair.

Chrissy spoke to the girl without having much thought with the words that she spoke,

"Well, if you wanted to leave a conversation, you probably wouldn't make yourself the center-of-attention. And even if you were, it's not hard to shift it to someone else." She pasued, the frown had vanished, but was only replaced by the tiniest of smiles. Boy how she hadn't making impressions to people like them, "Besides, being the center-of-attention is over-rated." She added with a shrug.\n\n

Jenna began to blink her eyes quickly, in order to keep herself from dozing off. Was she seriously part of a conversation about having conversations? Well, technically no, because she really hadn't said anything on the matter. She probably would have left ages ago, but the people around her seemed like they could be interesting- if given the chance to come out of their diplomatic shells. And as she scanned the rest of the people in the room with gray eyes, she was almost sure she wasn't alone.

"Does anyone else find this conversation boring?" she asked boldly. She hoped she wouldn't be offending anyone.

"Alright Jenna, what would you like to discuss?" Chrissy moved her body so that her legs were now curled under her. Her robes twisted uncomfortably beneath her and she leaned around to fix them. Blasted robes, she thought to herself as her face set in a scrowl while trying to straighten herself out.

After resolving the issue, she looked back up at Jenna, the scowl gone from her face and was replaced with curiosity.\n\n

Jenna could have just died right then and there, as soon as Chrissy asked her what she wanted to talk about. "So, what do you guys do for fun? Besides all the parties and stuff," she added quickly, hoping to get away from that. Who knows, one of the people around her might prove to be quite interesting. If not, well... at least she could say she tried- then make an excuse and leave.\n\n

TJ raised his eyes briefly.

What do I do for fun? fun? Did I hear that correctly?

He obserbed Jenna through narrowed eyes. "Fun" was never an option at his house. Whatever you did, you did because it needed to be done. Leisure time was a joke. His parents kept him studying at all hours of the day, and when released made sure that he was paying attention with little traps.

He sighed lightly. Parties were an away time from the structure of his household, the political backstabbing amusing, and the polite banter intriguing if you added the small fact of making your conversationalist run around in circles until he made them sound like complete hypocrits.

"I beat up little kids, torture older ones, hex people if they irrate me, and look forward to the time when the unforgivable curses will be forgivable again."

He looked dryly at the faces around him.If he actually did all that, his parents would be far more pleased with him. As it turned out he'd also be hunted by the Wizarding World as the youngest terrorist in the country.

"I'm kidding." He said shortly. Why wondering why these people would be shocked? He'd heard of it before. He turned to Jenna with a small smile. "Honestly darling, don't you believe parties to be enjoyable? But as you clearly don't, and that will be fixed, never fear, I must admit a small pleasure in the game of chess, and in the art of fencing." \n\n

Maybe I would by Jenna H

Jenna couldn't help but return a small smile. He sure had an interesting sense of humor. Actually, Jenna was quite ready to believe he tortured people- her brothers were like that. Joe was fifteen, and more of a bookworm, like herself, but Jack, at eighteen, was known to be a bully. Her parents' pride and joy.

As for the parties, well they weren't that bad... the first hundred times. After a while they all became quite alike and dull for Jenna. If she was lucky, sometimes she would find an adult willing to discuss potions with her. But that wasn't very often, especially with her parents always keeping her near. TJ had mentioned fixing her dislike her parties, and she wondered amused what he thought could possibly change her.

He liked chess and fencing. Jenna didn't know very much about fencing, but sometimes she played wizard's chess with her father. That is, when he was in a good mood, and felt like spending time with her.

"I guess wizard's chess is okay, but I really like potion-making. It's better than Defense Against the Dark Arts anyway," she didn't say it was because it was turning out to be her worst subject, "But I do wonder how you propose to make these parties more interesting for me. I'm sure my father would be eager to know," she added, almost sarcastically.\n\n

always so proper by Chrissy

Chrissy remained quiet while TJ and Jenna spoke about what they enjoyed. Her eyes had returned to their full sparkling brown and her real smile was playing at the corners of her mouth.

She had to admit, if TJ could joke about such things, he must have some sort of personality she could get along with. I wonder what he thinks of half-bloods. Does he detest them as he does with muggleborns? It was an odd thought for her to have, but she let it run through her mind.

As for chess, she could play it even if her life depended on it. She was never a good strategist and so, she never pretended to be one either. Rather not play a game I know I can't win She thought, amusedly, to herself.

Now flying was her passion. She could probably fly for hours if she could. She always felt free when she was on her broom. She lost herself in her thoughts for a moment before returning to the conversation in front of her.

Parties. Yes, they were fun, for awhile anyway. But you see the same people at all the parties, they become to lose their luster. Maybe if something entertaining happened every-so-often Chrissy would be more inclined to go, but for now, she figured it best not to get her hopes yup. \n\n
