Chloe felt it take effect almost immediately. It rushed through her veins like air filling her lungs. She felt alive and excited. Everything around her intensified. Chloe felt like she was flying. This was the best adrenaline rush she had ever had. She never wanted to come down from it. The endorphins filling her mind made all the pain go away. Everything bad and negative in her life just disappeared. How had she never tried this before? This was everything to the extreme.
You have to dance with us A voice whispered. Chloe felt her body moving to the beat of music that she hadn’t noticed before. It was loud and fast paced. Chloe started jumping with the mass of bodies that surrounded her. They all moved together as one and Chloe felt so in tune with them that they could all have been one person. It was amazing! Chloe had never felt so free in all of her life.
Are you having fun? The voice whispered. Chloe nodded. Would you like some more? Chloe nodded again. She felt the prick at the bend of her elbow but when she looked, nothing was there. And then the rush hit her again and Chloe felt like she was flying once again. That’s right child, let it flow through you. I promise… you’ll love it like I do.
The voice sounded familiar, but Chloe’s blurry state couldn’t quite put her finger on where she knew it from. Oh, this feeling why had she never felt this way before? Where was this beautiful magic hiding her whole life? She never wanted this to go away. She never wanted to stop dancing or flying or anything else that made her feel.
That’s a good girl. The voice said. Don’t you love how you feel?
Chloe looked up to see the voice and found herself staring into her mother’s face. She felt the prick at the bend of her elbow and she looked down to see her mother pushing a syringe into her skin. “No!” Chloe stated, but her drugged mind only mumbled the words and in her stupor, she was too weak to push her away. Oh, but you loved it so much, you have to have some more. The voice said. She knew it was her biological mother’s voice but her mouth didn’t move while she spoke.
Just let it run through you…. The rush hit again and Chloe fell backwards into the abyss. She thought that her blood was on fire, she was burning alive from the inside out. Her skin blistered and burst, rotting way in front of her. Chloe screamed. She screamed in agony and in fear, but her screams were only matched by a mocking laugh.
Isn’t it wonderful Chloe? You’re just like Mommy now. She screamed again.
Chloe awoke, covered in a cold sweat and feeling panicked. She tried to catch her breath, but only sobs came out. She had been dreaming. Just dreaming. She looked around in the dark room of the dorm to make sure she hadn’t disturbed Ji-Eun from her sleep. Not hearing anything, Chloe laid back down and allowed herself to cry quietly into her pillow.
