Meeting my roommates (first year girls' dorm)
by Diana Carey
When a girl had four brothers and an annoying mother, she had to learn a few things to get by. Diana Carey had learned to tell when she could be excited by things and when she should absolutely not be before she even remembered, and she had figured out very quickly that school was one of the things she shouldn’t seem too interested in unless she wanted to hear about it. Normally, she thought she could have gotten away with being excited about school with just a little teasing from her siblings, but after last year, with the school closed half the year and her oldest sibling coming home a wreck after her best shot at a quick marriage vanished, her parents had been more of a problem. If Diana had seemed eager at all, she was afraid Mother and Father might not have let her go to school at all.
They had, though, and at the Feast, she had been Sorted into Pecari. She wasn’t sure how her parents were going to take it, but her older brother Brandon, at least, had been delighted. Diana had spent the Feast with her older brother, who had talked so fast and so long about how cool school was that all Diana had had to do was sit and smile a lot, just like a good girl at a party – just like her parents wanted her to be. It was surprisingly easy.
Eventually, though, Professor Olivers the Head of House had collected the students, all the years had divided in the common room, and Diana found herself nervously approaching the door of a dorm room. She had two sisters, but Terry had been distant even before she was a bad example, and Ceci was little; she wasn’t that used to other girls. She had spent most of her time with Henry and Brandon, and, since they had been gone, on her own. Now, she had to make friends with other girls. It was a more daunting prospect than she had thought about before now that it was in front of her.
She went in and found a bed to sit on. She smiled at the first other girl she saw. “Hello,’ she said. “I’m Diana Carey, of the South Carolina Careys,” she introduced herself, standing again and making a small curtsy. “It looks like we’re going to be roommates. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Re: Meeting my roommates (first year girls' dorm)
by Joella Curtis
Her invisible stomach fully satisfied, Joella allowed herself to be swept up in the swarm of Pecari first years as they followed Professor Olivers to the Pecari common room. She kept close to her fellow classmates for fear of getting left behind. Two of her elder siblings had been in Pecari house during their time at Sonora but neither had ever revealed its entrance, claiming it to be confidential, so it was with much excitement that Joella entered the Labyrinth Gardens and stopped at the suit of armour.
Once inside the common room Joella listened obediently to Professor Olivers instructions before climbing the stairs to her dormitory, avoiding the mild temptation to test whether or not her head of house was speaking the truth about the consequence of going down the wrong hallway. The two words "flying thestral" repeated themselves over and over again inside Joella's head. Along with getting lost in the labyrinth, Joella was slightly worried that she would forget the password.
Joella entered her dorm and took a bed as she glanced around the room. It was strange to think that soon this place would be like a second home (or rather third in her case) to her. She removed her uniform green robe eagerly, having felt somewhat overheated during the feast.
In barely no time at all Joella was joined by another girl. She returned the girl's friendly smile then tried to mask her surprise as her new roommate, who's name turned out to be Diana, curtseyed before her. Of course, Joella had done her fair share of reluctant curtseys over the years but never before had she done so before another child. Perhaps it was just Joella's lack of interaction with a lot of people her own age or maybe they just did things differently in South Carolina. "Hi," Joella briefly contemplated returning the curtsey before deciding against, hoping Diana wouldn't find it offensive. "I'm Joella Curtis, from Tennessee." As far as Joella was concerned all branches of the Curtis family lived in Tennessee. Whether or not this was actually the case was another matter completely. "It's nice to meet you too. Do you know anyone here already?

Scarlett didn't want to admit it to herself, but she wasn't exactly thrilled about the expected separation from her twin sister. She was used to having Savannah close by. Still, they would still see each other and she was excited to meet new people too. The first year hoped to meet all kinds of interesting ones this year. Scarlett was the easily bored type and she didn't want to meet boring people. She'd be polite, especially if they were from the right sort of family, but really she didn't think she'd become close to anyone whom she found dull.
She thirsted for some adventure, that was what had probably gotten her placed in Pecari. So Scarlett couldn't help but be a little excited as they were led through the maze. Unfortunately, they weren't in it for very long before stopping at a suit of armor. She felt a little like pouting but did not want to display such behavior in front of her peers. Scarlett was a Brockert and she had to behave like one. She had to make a good impression on people, there was a chance that these other girls-unfortunately, no boys-were from important families.
The Pecari followed Professor Olivers into the common room, taking note of the password. That was one thing she did not want to forget. She almost laughed when the professor mentioned the house being her second family. Scarlett was only the fourth Brockert to be sorted into Pecari in the last thirteen years. Then again, she did say second family, because of course, the first year didn't have enough family at Sonora to begin with. Besides, even if her roommates became her best friends in the world, they would never replace Savannah.
She again resisted the urge to make a face at the mention of curfew and the professor being a stickler for punctuality. To Scarlett, the idea of the Labyrinth Gardens at night seemed exciting . If she didn't make it back to her room, well, it wasn't as if the suit of armor could deny her entrance if she knew the password. And there were always unused classrooms she could take refuge in for the night. She was sure she'd be able to transfigure something to make it more comfortable. Scarlett just hoped her roommates weren't sticklers for rules or the tattletale type. This was Pecari after all.
The first year climbed the stairs to her room, following up at least two of her roommates. This did not please her, she liked to be first. Unless she was being fashionably late and Scarlett had yet to attend that sort of party. Still, she entered her dorm behind the other two girls with a bright smile on her face. She was pretty excited to meet them.
The first girl introduced her self as Diana Carey and Scarlett grinned. Someone appropriate but hopefully fun. The second girl was Joella Curtis, a family she was less familiar with, but still thought was respectable.Though she didn't introduce herself exactly the proper way. The Careys were familiar enough to her but genealogy wasn't her best subject. "I'm Scarlett Brockert, of the Western Brockerts" She introduced herself, curtseying. "Pleased to meet you both." She addressed Joella's question. "I know lots of people here. I have a twin in Teppenpaw named Savannah and several first cousins."
Joella Curtis was from Tennessee, and Scarlett Brockert, who entered right behind them, was from…the west. Well, their family was large, too, and more unified, she thought, than hers. Saying exactly where she was from said more about her than she thought it might about most people. A South Carolina Carey was very different thing from a North Carolina Carey, a much more respectable thing to be. She thought she might have just introduced herself as ‘Carey’ if she had been from North Carolina, though she wouldn’t mention that to Scarlett, since she’d heard that North Carolina girl was going to marry some Brockert.
“I have three older brothers here,” she offered to the discussion of people they knew at Sonora. “Jay, Henry, and Brandon. Brandon’s with us here in Pecari.” The less said about her other brothers, the better, she thought. Jay was the Head Boy – she had used the short form on purpose, hoping they wouldn’t associate him with James the Head Boy if they hadn’t been paying that much attention to that part of the Feast – and so likely to frown on anything fun she or anyone close to her did even more than he would have been anyway, and Henry was just so – so awkward and dull and strange. Bran wasn’t exactly a conventional respectable brother, that was Jay’s job, but he was at least fun, sometimes.
“And who knows how many cousins,” she added brightly. She had one first cousin, Anthony, and then there were the North Carolina siblings, who were so distantly related to her that she wasn’t even sure how far back it went and who she didn’t want to be any closer to anyway. “Do you, Joella? Have any family or friends here?” Some people had friends before school, she knew, but Diana wasn't one of them. Her parents didn't take the younger four of their seven children out very much.
The instant Scarlett Brockert curtseyed, Joella knew she'd gotten it wrong. As it turned out, any respectable young girl curtseyed irrelevant of whom she was introducing herself to. Being the youngest in a fairly large family by quite some years often meant more lax parenting. Joella's mother did not neglect her duties but she had given up on drilling in ladylike decorum into her unruly youngster long ago. Joella could only hope that her roommates didn't any less of her (or her family, for she was certain that Franko and even Rolene would have curtseyed if they found themselves in her position) for not introducing herself properly.
Joella was unsure as to whether the fact that her roommates knew so many other people was a good thing or not. If she were to become friends with them they might know the ropes a little better. Of course, she had her elder siblings but they had attended the school so long ago that things had most likely changed in some ways.
"No," Joella shook her head in response to Diana. "My older brothers and sisters went here but that was quite some time ago." It seemed that Joella was the odd one out in her whole generation of Curtises for many of her cousins already had children of their own whilst she was only just beginning what had been their childhood, or rather 'adolescenthood'.
Joella found herself intrigued by the fact that Scarlett's twin was in Teppenpaw. She had had little interaction with twins so had always imagined them stereotypically - identical in every way. She didn't feel it appropriate to query the separation but wondered how twins could be so different as to belong to different houses. She supposed they were like siblings who, apparently, weren't necessarily likely to be in the same house.
One thing Joella longed to find out was whether her roommates shared her love for flying. And the question of Quodpot or Quidditch? But after the way that question had gone with Anita at the feast, Joella decided to leave it. She'd find out who held competition for the Quidditch team soon enough anyway. Instead Joella asked, "So what are you two most looking forward to?" She knew for a fact that neither girls were muggleborn so they would therefore have an idea of what was in store for them all.
Well, so far she supposed her roommates seemed pleasant enough though she didn't know how much fun they'd be yet since they were still on introductions and basic getting to know you questions. Still, there weren't any red flags so far. They were even from decent families even if Joella failed to introduce herself the proper way, that was so ingrained in Scarlett and most of her relatives that it seemed automatic. In fact, she even thought Kelsey who was irritatingly proper and due to come here next year might have been offended, even if she recognized the name and written the girl off completely. Kelsey wasn't as horrid as she'd heard Carrie was-Scarlett didn't really interact with her older cousins as much as the ones closer to her agae because of the age difference-but she was still kind of boring.
She nodded in response to Diana, not really knowing what else to say. Scarlett had already mentioned her relatives and if they heard about them somewhere it would be easy to figure out some of them by the fact that they shared a surname with her. Come to think of it, aside from Savannah, Duncan and the Headmaster himself, anyone here with the last name Brockert was her first cousin. Of course, there were Tristan and Carrie too, and she wasn't about to claim the latter. The girl had a horrible reputation from what Scarlett understood given both what her older cousins said and what she'd read in their yearbooks.
"I don't have any older siblings at all or any relatives in Pecari. My cousin Arabella graduated last year. " She turned to Joella. "You must get lonely with yours being so much older. Do you have cousins or anything your age?" Not only did she have her twin, but there was a cluster of female cousins in their family. Only four male cousins period but Ryan was so much older and Vlad so much younger. Scarlett felt rather lucky and even kind of sorry for the boys because of the huge age differences. Even though Kelsey and Chaslyn were both pretty uptight.
The first year didn't even really have to think about Joella's next question. "Exploring Sonora. " Scarlett said somewhat eagerly. The idea of being out in the Gardens, for instance, and discovering new things there didn't scare her, it excited her. Quite a bit actually. She wasn't going to sneak out or anything tonight though. She actually had to figure out a plan for that, which would probably, admittedly, take awhile. Scarlett was not a planner and she didn't think her sister or cousins would approve so they wouldn't help her. Chaslyn would be especially horrified. Maybe her roommates would and come with her though. Still, she wasn't sure yet. She might have liked them so far but she wasn't going to trust them after only a few minutes. She wasn't stupid.
Nor was she especially afraid of the staff even the Headmaster. Yes, they were all rather strict but it would be like a game for Scarlett, trying to avoid detection. It might actually be kind of fun.
Being the youngest by such a great deal was something Joella was used to. Although she couldn't imagine life being any different, she could wish it. She had wished it. Many a times had she been left behind whilst her siblings journeyed off to the mysterious world of Sonora. Even if Joella managed to discover the perks of being in such a position she frequently felt that these were totally outweighed by the benefits of having siblings much closer in age. Life at home had often felt like that of an only child and for someone like Joella, who thoroughly enjoyed company, this was not particularly fun.
"No, all my cousins are much older too," she told her roommate. Several of her cousins were already having children of their own whilst here Joella was just beginning her first year at Sonora. "It does get pretty lonely," admitted Joella then smiled, "But it has its perks."
Scarlett Brockert's response was the key to Joella's judgement of her. "Exploring Sonora," the girl had said. This, more than anything, is what made Joella like this particular roommate. It gave her hope that she wouldn't just be surrounded by friendly people as she had met so far but that these people were interesting and exciting and perhaps searching for the fun the she was.
Joella saw being sorting into Pecari as one of the best things that had happened to her so far at Sonora. Being in what was undeniably the most daring house surely guaranteed a higher chance of mixing with the kind of pupils who didn't fear the consequences of their actions.
If Scarlett had answered "Potions" or any other class for that matter, Joella had no idea what she would make of the girl. But the fact that the fellow Pecari had her mind on exploring suggested that she was adventurous and in Joella's mind that was always a good sign. Of course, the first year herself was almost certain that she would get lost in the Labyrinth Gardens pretty easily but that didn't mean she wasn't going to investigate it.
"Me too," grinned Joella before added the inevitable, "And Quidditch." With little else in mind to say she turned to Diana with interest. "What about you?"
