Lakeside cupcakes (tag: Waverly) by Eris Ackart

It was Eris’ birthday. When she was home over the break, her friends and family had thrown her a little pre-birthday party, but she still felt like celebrating. Her mum sent her a birthday package, even though they’d just celebrated, containing half a dozen cupcakes, a single candle, and a birthday card—Eris knew exactly what she was to do with it. She’d heard about MARS, but hadn’t had a chance to explore much the first half of the term. She decided to take advantage of the post-holiday high and get down there before the homework began to pile up again.

Eris had still been in the habit of wearing her old school uniform under her new Sonora robes, but today she kicked the pleated skirt and white button down for a pair of tatty jeans, flowy grey tank top and a yellow cardigan. Back at Hogwarts, she loved sitting at the edge of the Black Lake. There was something serene about being near the water, even those she hated the idea of actually going in it. She had, on occasion, but never alone since she was sure it was infested with grindylows and she didn’t want to drown. There was also the matter of the giant squid…

Eris didn’t really know what to expect when she walked into the MARS water room with her arms full of birthday goodies and a messenger bag slung over her shoulder. Her breath caught in her chest, and had she had a free arm, she would have rubbed her eyes vigorously. She was standing in front of her lake—the Black Lake from her old school. She knew she shouldn’t be that surprised, given that she was at a magical school, but even as a pureblood she was still surprised from time to time. The only thing that was missing from the backdrop was Hogwarts, and maybe the giant squid, but Eris wasn’t going to venture far enough into the water to see.

“Blimey…” She said to herself as a giant grin crossed her face. It was perfect. Like someone pulled this image right out of her head. They sky was slightly grey and filled with clouds, and the faintest breeze carried the familiar scent of the lake. Eris was positively chuffed. Any kind of water would have been great, but this was more than she could have expected--what a great birthday present. All she had to do now was wait.

Still determined to be a better friend, she sent an invitation with a random Pecari student in hopes that it would be successfully delivered to Waverly; a girl in her year that she kind of knew, but convinced her to sign up for book club. Eris had an easier time being friends with boys than she did girls, but she liked Waverly so far, and if she had a shot at having a female friend, it was between her and Megan. She didn’t want to be placed in a tent with random first years at the bonfire, and since sharing with the boys wasn’t an option, she needed to tend to her female relationships. Besides, there were some things that she just couldn’t talk to Michael about, and while she still had Abigal, the owl post wasn’t the fastest means of communication.

Eris made her way over to a large, rather flat boulder underneath a tree and set the box of cupcakes down before letter her bag slip over her shoulder and onto the ground. She brought her sketch pad, just in case Waverly didn’t show, but she was afraid that this was a scene that already filled up a page or two.

Fancy meeting you here! by Waverly Canterbury

Waverly had been wearing the unicorn necklace from Brandon for a few days now and she wasn't planning on taking it off any time soon. However, every time she looked at her reflection in the mirror, she saw it and her brain melted for the next half hour. So she hadn't been very aware of her surroundings until Eris's little note came by. She was pleasantly surprised by it, equally surprised that Eris had invited her to celebrate her birthday with her. The last time she had really seen Eris outside of class had been during the holiday party the Teppenpaws had thrown. She had looked gorgeous and she had been there with a date. Maybe he'd be there at the lake too.

Either way, there was no way Waverly was not going to go, but she had a little trouble thinking of what kind of present to get Eris. She wished she had known a little earlier. She did manage, however, to make a bunch of charmed paper cranes and put it into a decent-looking box. The cranes were made from plain parchment, but she had managed to turn them into bright, warm colors with charms. Thank goodness for magic.

It had made Waverly late, though, and she had to rush over to the MARS room. She hoped Eris was there still, and she pushed open the door, out of breath. She paused to thread her fingers through her hair, hoping it wasn't sticking up too much. She was at least dressed nicely. It was getting slightly chillier here on campus, so she had worn jeans, a blouse and a dark green cardigan over that. She was wearing a new pair of Chucks, her favorite type of shoe, though she had brought along her Pecari Converse for good luck during the Quidditch matches.

The lake looked different, but Waverly knew that it changed for whoever went in. She just didn't go into this room often enough, though that definitely would need to change this year. She smiled when she spotted Eris and approached her. There was a box that Waverly guessed was holding the cupcakes, and she quickly plopped down next to her. They had a great view of the lake from here, which Waverly was glad for. "Hey Eris!" she said with a smile. "Happy birthday! Sorry I couldn't get you anything nicer, but...here." She handed over the lime green box. When Eris opened it, the small, colorful paper cranes would flutter out, wings flapping, and fly around Eris's head before landing back on the box. One of them would open itself up and inside, Waverly had written, "To Eris: Happy birthday! I'll bake you a proper cake very soon. Your friend, Waverly."

So glad you came! by Eris Ackart

Eris was starting to worry that Waverly wasn’t going to show up. She shouldn’t have been entirely surprised, considering it was spur of the moment and it wasn’t like they were super close. She kicked a rock down into the water, and decided to make the most of things and dig out her sketch pad. She had one hand in her bag when she heard the door open and the girl quickly turned to see who was joining her.

“You came!” Eris said happily when her dark eyes fell on Waverly. Eris always secretly enjoyed seeing people outside of school robes. Back in England, they were required to wear uniforms, so seeing people in street clothes was always a little interesting. Sonora was a little different, since they could wear whatever they wished beneath the school’s green robes, but Eris still found it amusing that she and Waverly chose similar outfits. She knew she liked her for a reason. The only real difference was the choice of shoes, Eris had opted for grey ballet flats with bows on them, but she really liked Waverly’s trainers.

“I wasn’t sure you would, but I’m glad you did.” She admitted, taking her hand out of her bag to accept the box from the other girl. “You didn’t have to do anything! “She said with a smile as she opened the lid and was suddenly surrounded by beautiful origami cranes. As she read Waverly’s note, she was sure her grin was even broader. There were few things in life Eris loved more than dessert.

“Thank you so much, Waverly, they are lovely!” She said with a smile as she closed the box up and set it beside her. “I had no idea you baked.” Eris started, then realizing there was a lot about her classmate that she didn’t know. She hoped to remedy that as part of her motivation for asking her here.

“How was your holiday?”

Couldn't resist the cupcakes and company by Waverly

It looked like Eris had enjoyed the little present, and Waverly was delighted. "Yep! I'm the president slash founder of the Baking Club." She grinned. "If you didn't know that already. You should come sometime if you'd like." Last term had been insanely busy, and she knew this coming term would just be even worse. Still, she couldn't help but enjoy being super busy. She loved making time for her club.

"My holiday? Well..." It was difficult to know where to start and what she should tell Eris. Waverly wasn't exactly shy to share every detail about her break, except for the parts concerning Brandon. She was shy about sharing her crush to just anyone. She hadn't even told her sister. Wendy had just guessed correctly.

Her hand went to fiddle with her necklace again, fingers reacquainting themselves with the tiny unicorn. "I had a great break. The days leading up to Christmas was a lot of fun. I spent a lot of time with friends." One particular friend especially, but Waverly didn't mention that. "My mom and I bake a lot when it comes 'round to the holidays. She owns a bakery so she has to bake all the time. She's the one who taught me how to bake." Waverly smiled. "She sends me goodies sometimes, like pumpkin bread or muffins and stuff. I can share it with you if you ever want to try any. My absolute favorite is her banana nut bread. And her blueberry muffins! They're so delicious."

That hadn't been much talk about her winter break, so Waverly tried to get back on track. "Um, my grandparents from North Carolina came by to visit for a couple days. They have the coolest accent. My mom's from North Carolina, so her accent starts to come out when she talks to them. It's really funny." Waverly smiled just thinking about it. "Anyway, sorry for talking so much. How was your break? And how's your birthday day been? How old are you today?"

Hopefully they're both good. by Eris Ackart

“I’ve heard of your Baking Club!” Eris said, almost a little too excitedly. Michael had mentioned it to her the first night they’d met when he was helping her cope with transitioning to a new school. He’d thought that maybe she could make friends there. He also recommended bookclub and Quidditch, which she signed up for. She was impressed that Waverly had taken on the president/founder role. It seemed like the girls in her year were particularly ambitious, considering Henny lead the book club and some girl named Jade ran the horse club. Eris considered, for a moment, starting an art club, but people had MARS for that. Plus she was busy with everything else; she didn’t think she’d have the time to dedicate to actually founding something.

“You got me to join bookclub, it’s only fair I give yours a go.” Eris added with a grin. She’d initially written the club off, being more of an eater than a baker, but since it was Waverly’s club, Eris would check it out in support of her friend.

She noticed the girl playing with her necklace—a unicorn, was it? She had nervous ticks like that; usually she twirled her hair idly around her index finger. She hoped there was something more too it and that she wasn’t uncomfortable being there with her. Eris smiled and nodded along as Waverly described her holiday, suddenly remembering the cupcakes when she got around to the part about holiday baking with her mom.

“Sounds fun, and delicious.” Eris laughed, opening the cupcake box and taking a red velvet one. Her mum hadn’t made these, they were from a bakery in Phoenix, but she’d enchanted the box so that they remained as fresh as if they’d just been frosted. There were a few other varieties as well; chocolate with buttercream icing, white with chocolate, a chocolate chip cupcake with vibrant blue cream cheese frosting, a chocolate one with mint icing, and two red velvets with cream cheese as they were Eris’ favorite. She passed the box to Waverly and peeled back the paper holding her cupcake.

“I have a problem with baked goods. And dessert.” Eris admitted, sampling the icing with her index finger. “If I wasn’t so active, and were I not blessed with a quick metabolism, I’d be as big as a house.” She laughed and took a bite of the cupcake.

“Where does your family live?” She asked as Waverly revealed her family had visited from North Carolina. She had a vague idea where that was. She knew it was in the south, and in the east…but that was about it. She couldn’t help but laugh as Waverly apologized for talking too much. She was used to being the one who did all the talking, so it was rather refreshing to get to listen for a while.

“My holiday was lovely. Went home to England, saw my brothers, visited with my old mates, went shopping in London on boxing day—it was mad, but it was fun.” Eris said, taking another bite of her cupcake. Usually when she ate something she liked, she did a little dance of sorts with her shoulders. It wasn’t something she usually thought about or did on purpose, but she chewed the red velvety cream cheese frosted masterpiece her shoulders wiggled a little.

“14.” She answered, biting down on her bottom lip and raising her eyebrows. “It’s been decent thus far, you’re the only person who knows, however. I left my birthday tiara in my trunk.” Eris added in jest. “When’s yours?”

I couldn't have asked for better by Waverly

Waverly felt her insides swell with happiness by Eris's excitement for the Baking Club. "That's so sweet," she said, her voice reaching a high pitch as it usually did when she was inexplicably happy. It was how she had sounded when Brandon had given her a Christmas present. Waverly was really glad she had met Eris and had kind of aggressively pursued her friendship. She liked making people feel welcome and especially enjoyed showing new people around. It was part of that responsible older-sister coming out, but she also really just liked making new friends especially with people who weren't from America.

Since Waverly's mom hadn't sent her back with any baked goods, she was more than happy to take a cupcake from Eris. However, as Eris handed her the box, Waverly was struck by a sense of familiarity. “Wait, did you say you got these from Phoenix?” she asked, a smile spreading across her face as if she had just understood the punchline to a joke. "I'm from Phoenix." The box was one she had seen daily for her entire life. Waverly's smile was silly. "I hope you like 'em. These are from my mom's bakery." Waverly plucked out the chocolate with buttercream icing and swiped her finger along the edge of the icing before sticking it into her mouth.

"Yup, taste just like home." She beamed. "That's so funny! Yeah, if I didn't have a fast metabolsim I'd be huge too." She laughed, still delighted with the fact that Eris had gotten her cupcakes from the Canterbury bakery. "England sounds cool. There's actually a few people from England here. Why'd you decide to transfer to Arizona for school?" she asked as she ate her cupcake.

Eris's birthday apparently didn't seem to be too big of a deal to her, and Waverly could understand that. "Really? I feel so special being the only one who knows." She smiled. "If you had a birthday tiara, that would be so cool. You should have a pink boa too." The thought made Waverly giggle a little. "Mine's in April. April 20. I'll be turning fourteen then too! Does being a year older feel any different to you?" Waverly never felt any different on her birthday, but it was fun getting used to saying another number when people asked her how old she was.

Yay! by Eris

Waverly's reaction surprised Eris a little. She was glad that the girl was excited about her checking out her club, and she probably would have been as well, were the tables turned. It was nice to have someone get excited about her again. She was reminded of the look on Abigal's face when they saw eachother for the first time during break. She missed the giggle fests they'd have and being able to gush to her about anything and everything. No one would ever be able to take her place, but Eris hoped that her friendship with Waverly would only get stronger.

"You're kidding!" Eris exclaimed, glad she wasn't holding the box, as she was sure she would have dropped it. "That's too funny. Who would have thought? Of all the bakeries, mum went to yours. I didn't realize you were from Phoenix, considering how diverse the school population is, I guess I forgot people might also live nearby." Eris laughed and took another bite of her cupcake. "It's delicious, your mum is definitely in the proper business for her talents. I'd be in even more trouble if my mom baked half as well as yours."

Eris smiled when Waverly brought up England and that there were others at Sonora from her homeland. The smile only faded slightly when she asked about the reason behind her transfer.

"Dad had to come over for work, and mom didn't want to be alone while I was at school, so they made me move as well. My brothers are all of age, so they got to stay, and my life was uprooted." Eris had adjusted well enough, but she was still a little better toward her mother when it came down to it.

"I didn't think many people would care to know when it was, and I only had so many cupcakes." She said with a smile before erupting in laughter at the image of herself parading about with a tiara and boa. "I'll have to remember that come April. You're a spring baby then! Spring is always my favorite, a bit wet back home, but it's always beautiful. 14 doesn't feel much different from 13, really. Except I'm allowed to wear mascara more regularly." She added with a smile

Party in the USA! by Waverly

Eris going to the Canterbury's bakery was so coincidental that Waverly thought it couldn't have been. It had to be destiny that she and Eris were going to be bffs. "My dad always jokes that our family's going to get really fat off of her bakery, but we're really outdoors-y, campy people so we get a lot of exercise." She grinned. "I'll tell my mom that you liked her baking. She'll be really happy."

Waverly had always wondered about transfers. There was one other transfer, a fifth-year, but she didn't know too much about him and was a little scared to approach him. At least Eris was friendly, but it didn't seem like transferring had been her decision.

Waverly couldn't imagine her life in Arizona being uprooted. She would be forced to leave all of her friends, certain family friends...thinking about leaving Brandon almost made Waverly's heart break, but obviously this was only a hypothetical situation. It was hard enough not being able to talk to him several months during the year while she was at school. She wanted to write him letters, but her dad had told her boys didn't write letters. But she was thinking of trying anyway; her dad was just biased. Her dad went on business trips sometimes for work, but he hadn't ever had to leave the country. "What does your dad do?" she asked, curious to know what kind of job was worth leaving the country for. "And how old are your brothers? Have they ever come to America?"

The Canterburys, according to Waverly's paternal grandparents, were third-generation English-Americans. She wasn't really sure why her ancestors had decided to move countries, but either way, it worked out for them. Maybe one of them had a good job here. Waverly had always wanted to visit her dad's homeland, and now that she had at least a couple friends in England, she'd have more people to visit. And then she could maybe find that one British relative who was magical just like her if he or she hadn't passed away yet.

Thinking about her birthday made Waverly smile. "Yeah, spring is really pretty here too. There are more flowers than usual." It was the little things that told the changing of seasons in the otherwise somewhat-predictable weather in Phoenix. "Does it rain a lot in England? I wish it rained more here, but that wouldn't really make too much sense since this is the desert, technically." She smiled, and then had to look closely at Eris's eyes to see if she could tell whether or not her friend was wearing mascara. "Are you wearing mascara now?" she asked. "My mom doesn't want me to wear makeup till I'm sixteen, but we'll see how that goes." Her mom was from the South and had been in beauty pageants from five years old to seven. Maybe that was why she had a particular aversion to makeup, but maybe that would change when her daughters got older.

Nothing more American than hotdogs on an open flame by Eris Ackart

“Camping and outdoors things are always good. Maybe not as good as cupcakes, but fun none the less. Do you use an enchanted tent? And yes! Please give my regards to the baker! We’ll be Canterbury customers for life now.” Eris said with a smile, getting excited all over again about the prospect of hiking and doing outdoorsy things in Oregon during the summer. She pushed that aside for the moment and considered her question about the tent. She realized it was a potentially loaded one, and hoped that Waverly wasn’t offended by it if she were Muggleborn. Eris didn’t make a habit out of asking people about their blood status at the beginning of conversations. Actually, she normally never brought it up at all. It wasn’t something that mattered to her, or her family, but she knew that not all Purebloods felt the same way. She knew it was often a sensitive subject, and hoped that Waverly wouldn’t take it the wrong way.

“My dad works for the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Or he did back in England when he worked for the Ministry. Since the transfer, I’m not sure if his title has changed or not, actually. It all happened rather quickly, and I guess I never bothered to ask. Something within the government I reckon…I’m not quite sure how all of that works over here.” Eris replied with a shrug. “What about yours?” She asked, thinking it only polite to return the question.

“Old!” The Teppenpaw laughed, in response to the questions about her brothers. They weren’t old in the grand scheme of things, but Eris had been a surprise, so her siblings were a few years older. “I’ve got three, Alec is twenty two, Leander is twenty, and Darius will be nineteen come the end of March. Do you have any siblings?” Eris’ knowledge of the student population at Sonora was a bit limited. She knew there were some pretty large families that attended; and while she didn’t recall Waverly mentioning any, it was perfectly possible that she had a sibling or two wandering about the halls as well.

The idea of flowers in the desert surprised Eris a little, but she was glad for it. She liked the gardens well enough, but there was something comforting about knowing that Arizona as a whole wasn’t all cacti and tumbleweeds. She couldn’t help but laugh when Waverly asked about the rain in England.

“I swear that’s all it does. It does make for some lovely country sides though. I recommend going some time if you’ve never been. I’d be happy to show you around.” She finished with a smile. “The desert is beautiful in its own way, I suppose…thought I haven’t seen much of it outside of the school yet.”

Since her mum had given her the green light, Eris had been wearing mascara almost daily. She was getting better at applying it, and wasn’t getting black smudges all over her eyes. Her lashes were already dark and thick, but there was something about the ritual of putting on makeup that made her feel like a grown up. Plus she was secretly trying to get Michael to notice that she was actually a girl. Whether or not that was helping had yet to be seen, but she wore it none the less.

“Yep. I don’t know if it makes much of a difference really, but I feel different when I wear it. It’s a bit weird. Really? Not until you’re sixteen? At least you don’t have to wait until you’re of age.” She said with a shrug. “I think the party was the most makeup I’ve ever worn, and I’m not sure if it was the glowing spell or what, but I felt pretty. “ Her heart fluttered slightly as her thoughts took her back to the party, more particularly sitting with Michael and having him tell her she looked lovely. Eris felt a rosy hue creeping into her cheeks and decided to switch the subject.

“Are you excited about the bon fire? Do you have tent mates yet?”

Don't forget s'mores! by Waverly

It was always kind of awkward to Waverly when wizards or witches who didn't know her blood asked if she did magical things with her family. At least the Thorntons were really nice about it even if they had grown up with magic. "Yes! More customers for the bakery," Waverly said with a smile, and then fidgeted a little before speaking again. "No, my parents are muggles," she said. "We just use a regular tent. I'm guessing way more uncomfortable than a magical one?" She actually had no idea, but it would be awesome if she could bring a magical tent the next time she and her family went camping. "Are you a pureblood?" she asked, hoping that her potential new friend wasn't going to shun her because of her blood. It really was such a random thing to judge people of in her mind.

The title International Magical Cooperation was long enough to make Waverly have to think about it for a moment while Eris went on about how she didn't really know what her dad did within the government here. She finally decided that he had to be something like an ambassador or foreign representative. Maybe he was still one in America which would make a lot of sense. "That's really cool," she said, "although that stinks that you had to move. Though I'm happy you did since I got to meet you!" She smiled. "My dad's a mechanical engineer for Ford. He brainstorms new, more efficient ways to make cars." If Eris was one of those magical people who didn't know too much about the muggle world, she'd be happy to try and explain what a car was.

Eris's brothers were definitely older and it surprised Waverly. "Wow, they are a lot older! And that's a lot of brothers. I only have one younger sister, Wendy. She's actually at school with me. She's two years younger." She smiled. They were a lot alike in different ways, she and Wendy, but Wendy was a little less grounded on planet earth. Her mind was always wandering. "You might meet her sometime, maybe. She has blonde hair, though, not brown like mine." When she was younger, Waverly had been jealous of that, but now she liked her hair color a lot more.

Having the invitation to visit England someday was awesome. Waverly really wanted to take her up on that, but with the prices of plane tickets, she wasn't sure if she'd be able to. Probably when she was older, not now. "Thanks! I'll take you up on that sometime in the future. I bet my parents won't let me go till I'm older anyway." She sighed. Still, it was great having friends overseas.

"I can't really tell," Waverly admitted, "but I bet I'd be able to once I see you with it on and off." She leaned back. "I don't know, makeup's not a huge deal to me yet. Maybe it's because I'm not fourteen yet." She smiled, and then noticed Eris's cheeks blush. Was there a certain someone she was wearing makeup for? Waverly's curiosity was suddenly heightened and she wanted to ask a million questions but didn't know if Eris would appreciate it. Instead of jumping on her assumptions, she answered Eris's question.

"Yes, I'm so excited for the bonfire!" she gushed. "I can't wait to roast marshmallows and make s'mores. That's my favorite part besides being around a giant campfire. Bonfires are my favorite." She sighed happily. "Yeah, I have two tentmates so far that I know of," she replied. "Brielle and Clara. They're cousins. Do you know them? Anyway, you're welcome to join if you want! They're really nice. Then we'll have a complete four-person tent." Waverly liked her roommate a lot, but she thought it would be fun to have a "sleepover" with her other friends since she and Jade shared a room all the other days.

That sounds delicious by Eris Ackart

“Mum has little to do considering her nest is empty most of the year, so I’m sure she’ll be a regular customer.” Eris said, mostly in jest. She knew there was likely some truth to her comment, but she wasn’t going to dwell on her mother’s unhappiness, she put herself in that situation. She laughed when Waverly mentioned regular tents being less comfortable than regular ones.

“I think it depends on the tent. With some of them, you may as well be sleeping on the ground.” She said with a shrug. The Ackarts were one of the more progressive pureblood families; they taught their children not to judge others based off of it, and Eris was finding that most of her favorite people had non magical parents. She brushed her hair back from her face and stuck her nose in the air, mocking the posture of some of the more traditional purebloods.

“Mmmyes, I am, couldn’t you tell?” A smile broke out on her face and she couldn’t help but laugh. “It truly doesn’t matter. In a lot of ways, muggleborns are more interesting than purebloods, but that’s just my opinion.”
She shrugged when Waverly mentioned the move. She didn’t blame her father for it at all, which probably wasn’t entirely fair, but it was her mother’s pleading that had done them in. Things were definitely getting easier, particularly with people like Waverly and Michael around to talk to.

“I’m getting happier about it as well. It’s nice to have friends now; it makes it a lot easier.” Eris knew what cars were. Being a frequent visitor of the Muggle side of London, she had to be or else she was likely to have been run over. She didn’t know the details, but imagined someone must have been the creator of them, and was rather intrigued to find that Mr. Canterbury was one such person.

“That sounds far more impressive than my father’s job.”

“I always wanted a sister, but it wasn’t in the cards. You’re lucky.” Eris said with a smile. She got on with her brothers well enough, but the age difference did tend to put a bit of a wedge between them. She found herself missing them on occasion, but figured that had more to do with all of the distance between them than anything. Eris remembered seeing a younger girl with Waverly at the party, which must have been Wendy.

“There’s nothing wrong with brown hair!” She smiled and brushed her own back from her face. “Was Wendy with you at the holiday party then?” She asked, trying to remember some of the finer details of the party that weren’t related to pirates.

Eris felt slightly disheartened when Waverly revealed that she couldn’t tell she was wearing any makeup. She wasn’t sure if that was good or not. The whole point was to enhance your natural beauty, right? Not to look like a clown. But still, if another girl couldn’t tell, it was pretty hopeless that Michael would notice. At least that was the impression Eris got from her brothers, and another reason why she was so forward. Boys generally didn’t get hints and subtlety.

“Maybe.” Eris paused for a moment and bit down on her bottom lip as she thought about whether or not she should reveal the reason she was wearing it to begin with. “I honestly thought maybe it would help me get some attention. From a boy, I mean. Though I don’t even know if he fancies me at all, and I could be completely wasting my time.” Her voice lowered slightly as the last sentence left her mouth. She hadn’t worked up the courage to tell Michael how she felt yet, and was still kind of worried about what would happen if she did.

Eris was glad that Waverly seemed just as excited as she was for the bonfire, and she couldn’t help but beam as the Pecari girl invited her to share a tent. She felt a little bad about not including her own roommate, Megan, but couldn’t really refuse the offer. She didn’t know the Welsh girl that well yet, but Eris hoped she’d have made other friends in her three years at Sonora and wouldn’t have a problem finding a tent.

“Brielle from book club, right? And I don’t know Clara, but I’m always open to meeting new people. I’d love to share a tent with you! I’m quite chuffed about the entire thing; we didn’t do things like this at my last school.”

It's the best part! by Waverly

Waverly wasn't totally taken off-guard by Eris's attitude towards muggles, but she was definitely glad for it. There weren't too many purebloods who turned their noses up at her, but there were the few who did. It was easy not to like them, but she thought that they were missing out on a totally different culture, at least in her opinion.

She was also glad that Eris seemed to have taken the move well, or at least she didn't seem too broken up about it. And she thought Waverly's dad's job was interesting? That was a first. "I think you're the first girl who thought my dad's job was cool," she said with a smile. Usually the boys thought building cars was cool, but the girls couldn't see why it was such a big deal.

When Eris asked about her sister, Waverly nodded, slightly encouraged that Eris thought brown hair was pretty too. At least that was how she took it. "Wendy was dressed up as Alice from Alice in Wonderland, if you've ever read that book. It's by Lewis Carroll and it's the weirdest but also coolest book ever." She smiled. Wendy really liked it, but her sister's favorite book was always going to be Peter Pan first for the flying and then because the Wendy in that story was who Wendy was named after.

Waverly felt sorry that she couldn't tell if Eris was wearing makeup immediately when she noticed that Eris looked a little disheartened. But what made her feel a hundred times worse was that Eris was wearing it to get noticed by a boy. It also made Waverly almost burst with curiosity. "I mean, I can tell a little bit," Waverly said quickly, trying to make her feel better. "I'm just not used to noticing makeup unless girls put a lot on. And I'm sure whoever you're wanting to notice does notice." She smiled. "Is it okay if I ask who? Is it somebody here?" She shook her head slightly. "You don't have to tell me who it is if you don't want to," she added quickly, trying not to put too much pressure on Eris to tell but wanting to know all the same.

With Eris wanting to join Waverly, Brielle, and Clara in their tent, Waverly was overjoyed. "Yay! You'll like them. They're cool people. And they'll totally love you! You're cool people too!" She smiled brightly, excited even more for the bonfire. "Sonora does cool end-of-the-year stuff. One year I built a dollhouse for a fair out of cardboard and I painted it and all." It was still sitting in her room, lights still twinkling. It acted like a nightlight sometimes when she was feeling extra scared of the dark. The best part was that the lights never went out and it was a reminder of the magic she couldn't do at home. She loved magic so much.
