A Letter to the New Captain (Demelza) by Boomer

Three captains would be graduating at the end of the year and now that the year's Quidditch Final had concluded, Coach Amelia Pierce had considered the merits of who could succeed them. The new captains were, of course, straightforward. All of the Assistant Captains would be advanced to lead their respective teams. It was who would become the new Assistant Captains next year that required thought and possibly even discussion.

She had reached her decisions and three letters went out on the leg of Boomer, her large eagle owl.

Boomer stopped first at Pecari, seeing as it was the nearest to the Pitch. He flew in through the open window, found a perch, and waited patiently in the common room until Demelza Eagle appeared. At her arrival, he hooted to get her attention, and held out the leg with the letters attached to it. The top envelope had the sixth year girl's name emblazoned across it in the Coach's formal calligraphy.

The letter inside was scripted in fine penmanship on parchment that bore letterhead claiming its origin was "From the desk of Coach Amelia Pierce, Sonora Academy" and its contents confirmed it.

Captain Demelza Eagle,

Congratulations on your team's recent win and your promotion to Captain. You will be responsible for reserving the pitch for your practices and try-outs, putting up a sign-up sheet at the beginning of the year and recruiting as neccessary, hosting try-outs, and submitting your team roster within the first three weeks of school.

If you have a strong preference for someone other than Sophie Jamison as your assistant, please come by my office before the end of the year to discuss it; otherwise, I will assume Ms. Jamison will be the next Assistant. You may inform her of her promotion if she is your choice as well.

Congratulations and good luck next year,

Coach Amelia Pierce

Taking responsibility (Sophie Jamison) by Demelza Eagle

Demelza had been upstairs in her dorm to retrieve her guitar. She had already finished her Defense homework, so she was free to do as she liked for the rest of the evening. However, as she decended down the stairs her attention was grabbed by an owl hooting under an open window. She swore it was trying to get her attention, how she could tell that she wasn't sure, so she approached it, and it held out its leg to her. She suspiciously untied the letter and opened it, wondering who would want to talk to her using this owl.

As soon as she read the greeting, she knew what it was about and began to smile. She read it quickly, all of the information things she had already inferred. Of course, it made the most sense that Sophie would be the Assistant Captain. She was a great keeper (probably better than Starbuck, not that Mel really wanted to think about her former crush) and she trusted that she'd be a good leader. Maybe her work-out routines wouldn't be as intense as Mel planned to make hers next year, but she was trying completely different things for the team. There was no way she was going to do the standard, "Okay, seeker catch a small rubber ball, chasers pass a quaffle and shoot, and beaters hit soft foam balls!" Yeah, that wasn't happening under Mel's rule captaincy.

Putting the letter down beside her and strapping her guitar back on, the left handed Quidditch Captain played her favorite instrument until her new Assistant Captain walked into the common room. The second Mel spotted her she ran up to her swiftly and got her attention. "Hey, so I was just officially named Captain, so I figured I might as well officially name you Assistant Captain next year. You cool?" Not that she could really answer no to that. 'No' wasn't an acceptable response at all, because there really weren't many choices besides Sophie. Sure, she could choose one of the soon-to-be third years or soon-to-be second years--after all, she was only in her second year when she started as Assistant Captain, and Jose in his third when he started as Captain--but it took the team a long time to build after that. Mel was going to choose smartly. For choosing captains, experience mattered.

The power... the power...! Muahaha! by Sophie Jamison

As the term wound down, Sophie wound up. Her mind felt like it might explode if she didn’t find a way to alleviate the pressure. That was something she couldn’t do, so she figured she was doomed. Sophie couldn’t with all the magic in the world—well okay, maybe then—locate her father. He’d been gone for a long time now, and no one knew if or when he’d return. As for her other issue… well, there was nothing she could do about that, either.

Such was life. The blonde had to keep her head, as impossible as it felt. She was doing a pretty good job hiding her feelings, it seemed. Ryan hadn’t to her knowledge discovered. At least, anything noticeable was probably put off on the Missing-Dad thing.

Quidditch wasn’t even on her radar as she entered the Common Room, but Mel soon was. The tall sixth year was kind of hard to miss, especially since she seemed even taller from Sophie’s point of view; there was over a foot of height difference. Mel assaulted her with the offer to be Assistant Captain, and she couldn’t help but grin. She sort of forgot how to speak for a second, and when she remembered, the Englishwoman squeaked out, “Y-yeah! That’d be fantastic!” For a moment—just a moment—she was free from her worries and storm clouds.
