Jose sat in the common room after the try-outs had ended. It had been an interesting set of players who had turned out today. Jhonice was . . . well, less Jhonice than she had been last year which was actually very impressive really. She had seemed almost competent at making the broom go where she wanted it to go on command. He was pretty sure he was going to let her stay as a Chaser since she was complete rubbish at catching the smaller snitch sized balls.Among the seeker candidates, he had a much more difficult choice on his hands, and he waved Demelza over to join him before she could run off somewhere else. "Hey," he greeted his assistant captain. "I just want to go over what we saw today and see what you're thinking for the seeker. Jhonice was the only one who wanted Chaser, and she's improved enough from last year that I think I'll let her have it. We'll just have to drill her a lot before the first game on throwing through the goal hoops instead of between them."
Jhonice had done a fair job of catching and passing and even intercepting in the last game, after all, at least as well as Mellie. He was pretty sure Jhon may have even been in possession of the ball more often than even Jose had been. Mellie just hadn't completely missed the team's only shot at the Aladren goals or tumbled across the ground, so she hadn't come across as badly.
"But what do you think of the Seekers?" he asked, not offering his own opinion first, so she would give an unbiased one of what she thought. In truth, he thought any of them had enough potential to be good seekers, if they were in good health. Depending on how quickly Elijah's arm and Amira's . . . whatever happened to her . . . healed up, though, Jade might get the first game by default.

Mel, as Jose's Assistant Captain, always like to involve herself with the picking of teams, which the two captains always had to put a lot of thought into every year because of the constant change in line up. Mel was sure the rest of the day after try-outs to not stray too far from the Pecari Commons (so, spending most of her time in the Labyrinth Gardens in front of it) so that if Jose needed her, she wouldn't be too far. After a while of hanging in trees, a favorite hobby of the sixth year's, she went back in the common room, and, expectantly, Jose waved her over, undoubtedly to discuss the roster for this year.Mel returned his greeting with a bright smile and listened to what Jose had to say, nodding as he decided to keep Johnice on a chaser. The girl didn't have to best flying skills, which was something a seeker needed to have. Mellie was also a shoe-in for the position, so that left--
"But what do you think of the Seekers?" Mel sat down next to him, his brows furrowed together in concentration. She'd been thinking about it all day, and finally she was almost positive that she had come to the best decision possible.
"I'm not one to go seniority or experience; skill's what matters." Admittedly, she didn't know the whole situation behind Amira's story because she was more focused on the first years, but she doubted that Amira would be in commission soon anyway. "So, in this case, I don't think Amira should get the position again, because falling off your broom is completely unacceptable. And I really like that Elijah kid," he was actually really adorable and showed that he really wanted a position, "because I can tell he will be dedicated to the team, and he was alright once he got over his little collision with the goal post, but he isn't seeker quality. The girl, Jade, though seemed much more focused and solid. If I were to give her my old broom so she wouldn't be rocking on of the ancient school brooms, and we gave her a boat load of training, I think we might actually have a chance this year." Mel finished her evaluation of the day's try-outs with a small smile.
Thankfully, Mel wouldn't be the one posting the list, so she wouldn't be the one people would be angry with if they didn't make a starting position. Next year, however, that would be the case, and Mel doubted that she'd show compassion towards them. Every choice she made was a careful choice and with reason, especially when it involved her precious Quidditch team. Still, she planned to tell Elijah why he didn't get the spot, which was because she saw a bit too much of herself in him--he seemed clumsy and unfocused, not at all good for a seeker, but Mel seemed to make that combination good for beater. Maybe he could take her spot when she was gone, but for now he could train as a reserve. No matter what, though, she felt that Jose probably had his mind already made up. "Is that all?" she asked before going up to her dorm to polish her broom.

The Pecari Roster by Captain Jose
Jose nodded along as Mel gave her thoughts, opinions, and reasonings. What she said made sense, and he would give it due consideration, though he had been near enough to Amira when she fell to know it hadn't been her fault, and she'd been doing very well before she'd collapsed. Something had been seriously wrong.On the other hand, she hadn't mentioned to Jose that she was having a fainting problem before she'd started to play, and he didn't really want to reward her for keeping important information like that to herself. If she'd kept something like that from him before a game, Pecari would be down a seeker until he could put in a reserve. It would give the other team a window to catch the snitch without any competition. Jose's problem with Amira this year wasn't that he didn't think she was the best seeker, but that he couldn't trust her to tell him if she needed to sit a game out.
On the other hand, he had a kid who could only use one hand until he got the cast off and who knew when that would happen, and a girl who was good for an eleven year old but who would be up against Arnold Carey and Marissa Stephenson. Amira at least had experience in a real game.
"That's it," he told Mel, letting her go on and do whatever else she had to do today. He had to think on it and she couldn't really help him mull it over. He took her at her word that Elijah wasn't seeker material. She'd watched him more than he had, and the cast certainly hadn't helped him in his endeavors. Jose did like his drive, and with some practice, he'd probably make a good chaser or beater in the next two years.
He took out a sheet of paper and started writing out the part of the roster he already had figured out. When he got to seeker, he stopped and sat back in his chair, leaned his head back, and closed his eyes, trying to remember the three candidates as they had been as they sought the gold rubber balls.
After a while he put down a name in the last spot and the other two names as reserves.
