Despite not really having had any difficulty securing a date for the first ball Jose had attended, back in Second Year, Andrew had raised the possibility that it might be harder this time around since the older girls were probably going to be looking for date-dates instead of friend-dates. This posed a minor difficulty since Jose wasn't really in the market for a date-date (none of the girls in the school were the sort that California Pierces married, and Jose didn't want to go through a Saul-esque break-up with a nice girl just because their paths went different ways after Sonora).
Fortunately, he was pretty sure there were still girls in Pecari that he could get friend-dates with, if he acted quickly enough. The Brockerts, he thought, did arranged marriages, so Tawny and Nina probably weren't looking for boyfriends, and both were promising prospects since he'd gone with Tawny last time and Nina was a prefect and needed a dancing partner at the very least. Also, he was beginning to suspect that Mel didn't date guys, so she might be willing go as a friend if both Brockerts fell through.
Tawny though, he thought, was the most obvious choice, both because their friendship had slipped a little last year and he wanted to mend fences, and because she sort of had dibs based on the fact that he'd gone with her last time. Besides, he knew Tawny a lot better than Nina, and despite her reputation of being somewhat scary, Jose had always found her to be a perfectly decent person.
So he sat down in the common area, ostensibly working on a Charms essay, but most people-watching and keeping an eye out for Tawny's arrival. When she did make an appearance, Jose called out to her, waved to get her attention, and abandoned his couch and homework in favor of approaching her. "Hey, Tawny, do you have plans for the dance yet? I was wondering if you wanted to go with me again."
He really hoped she'd forgiven him for getting the prefect position instead of her, but she'd had a year to cool off. With a little luck, she no longer wanted to help him sing soprano for a decision the staff made that he'd had no input into.
All year, Tawny had been sulking. Which wasn't really that surprising, she often was. She was in a constant bad mood and last week she had been in an especially bad one. The kind where it was best that Pippa was in a different house.
She felt better now. Still irritable, but that was just Tawny's natural personality. It wasn't her fault though that people were stupid and obnoxious. Who could blame her for basically wanting to hex almost everyone all the time?
Besides, Tawny had perfectly good reason to be upset. She was still not betrothed. Pippa was only a year older and she'd been betrothed for quite some time and before Tawny knew it, her sister would be married. But at least she'd be out of the house. The year Pippa had first gone to school and Tawny had still been at home had basically been the best one of her entire life.
What if they couldn't find anyone to betroth her too and she became an old maid? Tawny shuddered at the thought. The idea of someone wanting Pippa and nobody wanting her ever was intolerable. The Pecari should have been used to it by now, but being second best, being inferior and unwanted was something that nobody ever got used to she was sure.
And what if they thought she was like what Aunt Margo was? Of course, Tawny was pretty sure that nobody else knew for sure what she did about her aunt, but when a woman didn't get married, people talked. And Tawny only wanted them talking about her for good reasons.
To top if off, Royal Twerp had gotten prefect. Granted, Tawny would be annoyed and offended by any of the being prefect, given what a waste of space all the Twerps were, but that girl just had everything. Just like Pippa. Why couldn't Tawny have anything in life?
At least Red-haired Twerp and Boy Twerp were gone. Two down, three to go.
The sixth year entered the common room. She was just about to go up to her room when she heard her name being called. Tawny was happy to notice that it was Jose that called her. She liked Jose despite that he had gotten prefect instead of her and actually liked the Twerps.
For what seemed like the first time since the term started, Tawny's lips curved into a smile. "Sure, I'd love to go with you." They could never be more than friends but given a choice, Tawny would rather go with Jose than anyone else in school. Since he was one of the few people on the planet that she didn't hate.
Plus, it was nice that someone actually liked her, actually wanted to go with her. He could have asked a Twerp, but he chose her .
And Tawny liked being chosen by someone for once.

Jose gave Tawny a big grin when she confirmed she did want to go with him, as much or more because it seemed to make her genuinely happy (Tawny didn't get to be happy nearly often enough, in Jose's opinion) and their friendship was now clearly back on track as because it meant he didn't have to go to any of his back-up plans. "Great!" he confirmed cheerfully.
Now that the question of who he was going with was settled, the specifics of this particular dance did require a few extra details to be worked out in advance. "So, historical theme, right? Did you want to go in costume, or just dress up nice?"
Ordinarily, he'd be all over the costume, but he wasn't quite sure Tawny was into that kind of thing, and if she thought it was dumb, he figured it was only polite and chivalrous to take his date's opinion into consideration. "My family is all over the 16th century fashions. I think we've got more of that than modern clothes. If you need to borrow a proper Queenly dress - or something less . . . constricting, if you prefer - I can totally get one for you, if you'd like. Or we could skip it." He shrugged, as if it didn't really matter and it was totally up to her.
Tawny couldn't believe she actually got to be happy for once. Certainly, her parents wouldn't be happy, they hadn't when she went to the ball with Jose last time but they had been more concerned about Pippa going to the ball with a muggleborn than her with Jose. Whether or not she'd been the one to do better for once or they just cared more about Pippa than her was still debatable. Tawny would prefer the former, but the latter was more likely.
And really, she didn't care if they were unhappy with her. Tawny wasn't happy with them . She couldn't remember a time when she had been. They'd never needed or wanted her. She was the one who could never measure up. The one who didn't behave properly.
Besides, maybe this would put pressure on them to betroth her. That was how it happened with Pippa last time. The idea of being an old maid or even people thinking she was a lesbian was intolerable to Tawny. She needed to be chosen, needed to be wanted by someone. Valued, the way Pippa was.
But Jose had still chosen her . Not one of the Twerps or her sister or anyone else. Her . That meant everything in the world to the sixth year Pecari. Tawny had never come in first, never was the best. Not with her family or classmates or the staff that hadn't made her prefect. She felt rejected a lot and it really hurt.
"Hmm..." Tawny thought out loud. "I suppose going in costume might be fun, since you say your family has the appropriate clothing." She smiled shyly. "It might be fun to be queen" Queen was the top, she could be on top for once. Or at least look like it.
