Homework jam session! Who needs some entertainment?
by Jessica Zeworth
It wasn’t uncommon for Jessica to find herself bored at school. See, there was always plenty to do, but that didn’t mean it was fun. Jessica had explored the Labyrinth Gardens over and over, even finding a wonderful tree stump; it was her favorite spot in the whole place! It was the best place to play her ukulele. Exploring did get old after a while. She could always do homework…
The second year stared at her Potions homework as she sat in the Pecari commons. Well, this was super boring. Jessica needed more friend-type people. Cooper, her bestest friend in the whole world, wasn’t really a fan of the whole hanging out business. He also didn’t seem to want to have a jam session with her and her ukulele.
It was almost the end of her second year at Sonora, and her number of friends was extremely low. Her parents had been led to believe that she had plenty of friends. Jessica didn’t mean to lie, but they wanted to home school her! And the Pecari didn’t approve of being home schooled. Her parents just wanted to protect her; being bald often got kids ridiculed. At least, that’s what her mom had read on Alopecia chatrooms and stuff. Jessica didn’t want to hear it.
See, kids at Sonora didn’t seem to be that bad. Most of them were friendly enough, and, even though she hadn’t gotten that many friends, they hadn’t made fun of her lack of hair. Of course, she still had her eyebrows and eyelashes, so she wasn’t as bad off as some of the other kids her mom had talked to on Alopecia chatrooms. The way Jessica saw it, if she wasn’t being picked on, then nothing was really wrong! But her mom wanted proof about her having friends and all, and Cooper didn’t seem to want to come over during the summer.
What a dilemma.
Declaring her Potions homework to be super boring, Jessica hopped up and ran to her room to grab her ukulele. Not many people were in the commons right now, so it was fine to play in the common room. Plus, it was totally productive! She still didn’t know what she was going to do at the talent show thing…she was just figuring it out!
She plucked a few strings, smiling to herself. Her wonderful ukulele was perfectly tuned, as usual. Now…what song was she going to play? The bald girl hummed to herself and strummed the ukulele, not playing anything in particular. She looked around the common room, noticing eyes on her.
“Well, hey!” she said brightly, then paused and started strumming her ukulele again. Hello…hey, that was a song, Hello Goodbye! She started playing the song on her ukulele, singing for the eyes that were on her. “You say yes, I say no! You say stop, I say go, go, go!” She kept playing, having fun the whole time, and did a final strum at the end. Grinning, she stood and curtseyed for her audience, pretending to hold a skirt or something when she did so.
“Thank you, thank you! I hope I brightened your day with a great break from whatever homework you’re doing,” she giggled. At the very least, she could always try to make friends. There was never a wrong time to do so!
