Picking the Pecari Team (Elly, Raoul, Mike) by Saul

After the try-outs, but while Saul was still debating the team roster for the new year, Meredith had told him she was leaving Sonora. That had been devastating on a couple of levels (not least because his curse of losing Pecari friends was moving beyond his roommates now), but it did have a major impact on what the Quidditch team was going to look like.

The chasers were now safe. Mike and Raoul were really the only two up in the air. Chaser and Seeker weren't contested and Jose was still too new on a broom (and his apparent fear of heights was really going to have to go before Saul felt comfortable putting him on the team as anything other than an alternate).

So that meant, of Mike and Raoul, one was going to get Keeper, and the other would be put in the empty Beater slot. Neither had tried out for Beater, so he couldn't tell how well either would be at it. He was inclined to put Raoul there, just because the fourth year was bigger than the second year, but Raoul did have the greater experience as a Keeper.

Indecisive, he'd called together the two people in question and his assistant captain. "Hey guys," he greeted them as they all met in the common room, though his usual grin was dimmed with the knowledge of Meredith's impending departure. He gave Elly an apologetic look of sympathy. Meredith was one of her very closest friends, and so soon after Echo left, it had to hurt.

"I'm guessing some of you heard we're going to have an opening for Beater." By which he meant Elly, but he turned his focus to the younger guys as he continued, "So I was wondering if either of you wanted to volunteer for it before me and Elly decide for you." Guessing they were both familiar with muggle sports, as Pecari tended toward muggleborns and mixed bloods, he asked, "How are either of you at baseball?"

Volunteering by Mike Song

Mike still felt unsure from the tryouts. He'd been decent at blocking the goals, but it was strange to play catcher without a mitt on his hand. His depth perception kept including the extra length and breadth a mitt would give him, and more than once, the quaffle skittered over and past his fingertips. It frustrated him- especially as most sports he approached came to him easily. His natural talent at baseball wasn't translating into the keeper position at all.

It was for this reason that when he descended down the stairs to the common room, his stomach churned. Mike approached Saul and his assistant captain, Elly, and tried to afix his usual careless grin. The end result was lackluster, and giving up at faking it, Mike waited for the news to fall. Considering the reigning keeper, Raoul, was present as well, he had a feeling that it would be of the bad variety.

"I'm guessing some of you heard we're going to have an opening for Beater."

Immediately, Mike's stomach settled.

"So I was wondering if either of you wanted to volunteer for it before me and Elly decide for you."

It took all of his self control to not interrupt, and once the 'How are either of you at baseball?' was spoken, Mike immediately replied. "Are you kidding? I've played little league off and on all through elementary- and I have a slugging average of .517. I know how to hit a ball." And slowing down a bit, he finished his declaration, "I would definitely like to volunteer for beater, Captain."

Elly Eriksson

That's sorted, then by Elly Eriksson

It was great that Pecari wasn't struggling to put together a team - Elly had always been thankful that the House had such enthusiasm for Quidditch - even with Meredith leaving they still had a reserve player. Elly still hadn't processed that quite yet. Everything had been normal: Merry had turned up to school, signed up for Quidditch and all. It was going great. Then one night she'd just told Elly that she wasn't staying. Just like that. It was like a bomb dropping. Elly knew the family'd had issues, but she'd honestly believed they were moving on - she'd stayed with them over the summer and everything had seemed fine. It just wasn't fair!

But now wasn't the time for that. Now was the time for Quidditch. With Raoul and Mike both standing there, Elly was pleased Saul was still captain. He was much better at this decision type stuff that she was. How was she going to cope next year? She'd always assumed all her friends would be there to support her. At least she'd still have Caedence.

Almost the second Saul stopped talking, Mike expressed his enthusiasm for playing Beater, and despite her gloom, Elly felt a grin spread across her face. "That's settled, then," she announced, knowing Saul wouldn't mind. "Raoul, you'll be Keeper. The list will be up soon," she winked at Saul, as if to remind him of this tiny addition to his workload.

Once the younger players had skidaddled, Elly let out her breath in a sigh. Now the Quidditch problem was solved, she didn't have a huge amount to think about. Without really thinking about it she threw her arms around Saul's shoulders and gave him a tight hug. She wanted to tell him don't leave, but it was Saul's last year and he had to go at the end of it. So she didn't say anything, and upon releasing him she could only offer a sheepish smile. "I'm gloomy," she said, and despite her smile and cheerful tone, it was the truth. Elly just didn't do gloomy very well.
