Showing Off My Mouse by Saul Pierce

Saul waited eagerly in Pecari's common room for his friends to return back from their respective midterm trips. He bounced slightly on the balls of his feet in anticipation and the energy he was suppressing just to stay in one spot on the floor wafted off him like a palpable force. It was like looking at a bent bow with a fraying string: it could fly unexpectedly into motion at any time.

The string snapped when Saul spotted the first of his friends. "Dude!" he called out, bounding forward and holding both hands out in front of him as if cupping a small round ball between them. "Check this out!"

Grinning and bright eyed with proud excitement, he parted his hands a couple of centimeters so that a pointy black nose with whiskers could poke out between his thumbs. "His name's Pepperoni. Isn't he the greatest mouse ever? Simon got him for me. He does tricks. I've been teaching him since Christmas. You don't think Brett and Jae's cats will try to eat him will they? I mean, just because he's called Pepperoni doesn't mean he tastes that awesome, right? Don't worry, Roni, I won't let anyone eat you, kay? See, he's not worried. He's a brave little mouse."

Nice Mouse by Elly Eriksson

Midterm had been an interesting experience; Elly had spent almost an hour back in her home country, but that was all. It had been fun visiting her relatives and meeting Caede's family, but it wasn't quite the relaxing break she'd been hoping for. Still, now she was back at Sonora, and hopefully some vague sense of normality would return.

Having lost Caedence somewhere in the crowds of returning students, Elly headed on up to the commons alone. Her travel bag would find its way to the dorms by prairie elf, as usual, but Elly carried with her a tote bag full of presents - a box of gingerbread cookies in assorted funny shapes, one for each student who slept in the fourth year dorms. She'd barely made it through the door when Saul bounced merrily toward her.

"Hey," Elly grinned in greeting, finding his excitement infectious. "Ah yes, Roni," Elly remembered the mouse from Saul's letter. She could tell the Saul was completely overwhelmed by his new pet, and she couldn't deny the mouse was sweet.

"He is a brave little mouse," Elly agreed, stroking Roni's head with her fingertip. "I think the cats will be okay as long as your careful," she said. "Scrap hasn't eaten Pence yet, anyway." Caedence's cat admittedly did seem to take pleasure in teasing Mere's mouse, and both the girls' puffskeins, but had never made to harm them.

"Maybe Roni and Pence could be friends?" Elly suggested. Then again, maybe they already were friends - Meredith had stayed at school over midterm, too. Under the circumstances, Elly understood her decision to stay, but she couldn't help suspecting that Mere might have been lonely over the holidays. "Have you seen Meredith much?" Elly asked Saul. Then, realising that might come off a bit dismissive of his own company, she added, "And how was your holiday?" After another short moment, she also remembered the bag full of gingerbread. "Oh, and Happy Christmas," she said, holding the bag open toward Saul. "Choose a box."\r\n\r\n
