QUIDDITCH SIGN UPS by The Craven Captains

It was with a slight air of sadness that, before bed on the first night, the twins posted the sign-up sheet for the Quidditch team. It would be their last year as captains... The team had had mixed success under their guidence, and they were determined that this final year would see them victorious. However, two of the other captains would also be in the same melancholy postion, so it wasn't going to be an easy fight.

"QUIDDITCH SIGN UPS" read the sheet, in big, bold letters. In only slightly smaller writing underneath, it continuted

"Sign up with name, year and position(s) below. No firsties allowed, but you can come to practices to get started for next year. ABSOLUTE DEDICATION REQUIRED.

The Craven Captains, 7th years, Beaters"

Wouldn't miss it by Saul Pierce

Saul stopped in front of the bulletin board on his way to gathering the firsties for their tour down to the Cascade Hall. He was pleased to see the sign-up sheet already up, so he took out his pen and, without any hesitation or consideration, put his name beneath the Captains'.

His handwriting was, as usual, just this side of legible. He had managed to spell all three words correctly though, mostly by dint of the fact that his name counted for two thirds of them. After now five years of sign-ups, he was also an accomplished speller of the word 'Chaser'.

As he finished writing his name, he stepped back and read over the what the Cravens had written, so he would know what his own sheet would have to include the next year. Once he felt sure he had the important parts committed to memory, he went to collect first years.

Chasing a chaser position by Caedence Redoak

The quidditch sign up sheet hailed her with its siren call. Despite her new foster family being a whole troupe of witches and wizards, she wasn’t able to play quidditch. Not that she wanted to play with Chuck and Martha or whatever their names were. Her new foster parents were so lame. Better than the other ones.

After all, the Greens were all so loud. And their insistence on her calling them Mommy and Daddy just got her mad. It was their fault really. They made her break the TV. If they weren’t so annoying she wouldn’t have done it.

Then there were the Fellers. Those stupid soccer moms and cheerleader types. It wasn’t Caedence’s fault that her and Candie got in a fight. If the girl would have shut up about how cute it was that the names Candice and Caedence were soooo alike and how cute she thought Caedence would look in pink, Caedence would have never felt the urge to cut all her pretty little bright orange hair off. The super glue would eventually wear off of her cheerleading outfit right?

But as she approached the sign up sheet nothing else mattered. Each beating of her heart screamed quidditch. She was going to play hard this year. She was going to do the very best she could do. And she’d do it for three reasons

One, to make the twins proud. They believed in her enough to let her on again and again, despite her bludger-magnetism. This was their last year. They deserved Pecari win for once. Pecari was going to get the cup, no matter what she had to do to ensure it happened.

Two, to show her stupid father up. Thank god he was out of her life once and for all. He pled insanity at his hearing. After her stupid neighbor saw three finger-shaped marks on Caedence’s neck. Her dad claimed he had accidentally grabbed her the wrong way. Her neighbor knew better and reported him. Now he’s probably off in a padded room hugging himself right now babbling about how Caedence bewitched him into losing his temper. Good riddance.

Thirdly, she wanted to play for her mom. She knew her mom would watch her games from where she was at. Caedence didn’t believe in heaven, per se, but she believed there was something else. After all, her mom believed in it, so that’s probably where she is now. And Caedence wasn’t going to let her down.

She laughed at her mistake. Was she really going through school that fast? It seemed only yesterday she was a little eleven year old starting Sonora. Now she’s a teenager. Time flies.\n

Irene Liddowe

The notice board had been catching Irene's all day. She had already signed up for the soccer scrimages, but she was really looking or the Quidditch sign-ups. Oddly enough, she didn't any more motivation than the love of the game. That was plenty, though. Irene would play as a reserve if she was put there, but she hoped that two years of dedication as a reserve would be at least considered when she tried out. She wanted to be on the Team. Irene had watched the twins play over the summer at their tournament and was looking forward to versing them on the Crotalus team. It would be one heck of a game, that was for sure. Sure, it would be competitive, but only a little more than at home. Irene was looking forward to it...

This time, her glance at the board was rewarded with The Sign. In big letter, it clearly stated that the time to sign-up had come. Irene grinned and strode towards the sign, pulling out her pen as she went. What Sorrel had said to her last year had really helped her stay motivated towards a spot on the team. Yes, everyone was going to be trying out, but Irene felt she could compete at their level, and she was going to try her hardest to be above the expectancy.

Irene placed her pen on the sign and put down her name:

Elly Eriksson

Elly didn't even think twice about signing up for Quidditch. Every year since her second at Sonora (she hadn't known what Quidditch was in her first), Elly had played Seeker for the Pecari team, and she had no intention of giving that up. Of course she would relinquish the position if it were in the best interest of the team, but, without being too cocky, Elly liked to think she was a rather good flyer; her new broom had further improved her performance.

Besides, the practises were always fantastic fun. It helped that the team, including the reserves, contained several of Elly's closest friends, and the fact that the Cravens liked to work their team extra hard only further encouraged Elly to give her absolute best. There was little else that could draw such effort from the characteristically laid-back fourth year.

Skimming the sign-up list on the noticeboard, Elly grinned at the names already there, and added her own:

Hazel eyes stared at the Quidditch sign longingly, just as they had been for a week now. As a first year, there was some stupid rule against Hannah playing Quidditch, and so she had found it wisest to keep away from the sign. If she didn't, it would probably only upset her. The girl tried to remind herself that she ought to be focused on things like finding her way around school, and that soccer scrimmage she'd signed herself up for, but Hannah was not easily swayed. Eventually, she migrated across the common room, if only to stare at the sign and wish she had been born four months earlier so that she could be a second year.

"First years can come to practices to get started for next year?" eyebrows raised as the lanky girl carefully examined the sign for the very first time. This was wonderful! There was hope after all! She wouldn't lose a whole year of Quidditch, at least, not completely. Instead, Hannah would get to practice with kids who had been playing in organized games for years, some who might even be going on to play professionally. This was the most wonderful news she had gotten since she discovered that she could find her way back to the Common Room from Cascade all by herself.

By the time Hannah left the common room, a new name was added to the list, her own.

Raoul hadn’t been sure of signing up. A while had passed with no new names added to the list and he was beginning to get anxious. What if he kept waffling and never doing anything? Then the list might pass him by! But the positions were all full weren’t they? After all, Elly Eriksson is a seeker. The Cravens are beaters. Stephen Baxter is a keeper. Caedence Redoak, Irene Liddowe, Saul Pierce and Meredith Lail were all chasers. What was the point, when all the positions were filled?

But, as he approached the list, he realized that Meredith and Stephen weren’t there. Why hadn’t they yet signed up? Was this a sign or something? It would be fun to write home to his friends about. Besides, he could use to meet new people. And it wouldn’t hurt to be in practices. It would get him some muscles. He was never too young to become fit.

Besides, maybe he could get a certain someone…or someones, to notice him. What did Holly think about quidditch? What did Alexis think of it? Why did it matter? Girls were yucky! But, he wasn’t so sure of that anymore. Did he like girls or not? It wasn’t like he really, really liked Holly last year. They were great friends, and sure she was pretty, but he wasn’t yet interested in girls. But now? He wasn’t sure. He didn’t think he was. He was sure he wasn’t. But then he caught a glimpse of red hair and hoped it was Alexis. Or he saw Holly in the halls and felt himself blush. He didn’t understand why, but he hoped this impressed the two of them.

But now what to sign up for? There were three chasers already. There were two beaters. There was a seeker. No keeper though. But what if the keeper wanted his spot? He knew that Stephen was friends with the captains. He signed his name in his usual neat handwriting.

Pleased with his work, Raoul walked away from the sign up sheet. He figured he could get a few minutes of english studying done before he worked on his Charms work.\n

Lizzie had been rather reluctant to return to her commons at the end of the first day of term. It was her seventh year; she should have been excited, pompous, and happy. But the summer had proved interesting, and instead of seeking out her boyfriend, Lizzie avoided Ash. She knew she couldn't hide from him for too long without causing him to worry, but she needed a battle plan before she talked to him. So for the moment, she was contented to quietly avoid. That ended, however, when Lizzie saw the quidditch sign-ups posted. Thinking the omission of her name on that list would have been highly suspicious, she approached the list and read the names already there.

A wave of her wand later, the ink was drying on the page, announcing Lizzie Lavine, Seventh Year, Chaser in her elegant script. Lizzie took another quick glance around the fairly empty common room and went to her room, two steps at a time.
