Maybe This Time (Room 5) by Kirstenna Melcher

Everything seemed to be falling apart lately for the Teppenpaw. Which of course had to be like ninety-nine percent the Imposter's fault. The rest was the Beetle Lady's. Naturally, Kirstenna saw the woman as a threat to her entire family-and she did mean entire family, given that she was married to Kirstenna's distant cousin. The ones most closely related were in the most danger. She really needed to warn Ryan and Arabella in particular. In Seth's case, the Teppenpaw wasn't sure he wasn't a completely willing accomplice.

There were, however, much more pressing issues. First of all, there was Sophia. Kirstenna had been so sure that they were going to make up and be the best of friends again. She'd had an opening, an opportunity-only to have Renee come and destroy anything. First of all, the wretched evil creature had barely acknowledged Kirstenna's presence. That actually made the Teppenpaw glad that Renee was not a human being and could thus not be held to the same standard of politeness. Just because Kirstenna wasn't a pureblood didn't mean that she didn't believe in having some manners.

Furthermore, Renee had kissed Sophia. Now the fifth year had no problem with her once best friend being a lesbian. If Sophia met a nice girl that she was in love with-like Professor Levy had-and wanted to be with her, Kirstenna would support her wholeheartedly. However, she couldn't support a relationship with a dark foul creature meant to suck out one's soul. She'd rather even see Sophia-whom she cared about even if Sophia didn't care about her-be attracted to an inanimate object than Renee.

Not to mention Kirstenna was sure that she'd lost Sophia forever as a friend. And that really hurt. The Imposter had kidnapped Brian, boiled Tobar alive and now this. Sophia seemed to be lost to her as well thanks to the Imposter. In fact the fifth year was really lonely. Not only had the Imposter kidnapped one friend, killed another and destroyed the third's soul, but her cousin had graduated-a natural occurrence but it didn't make her feel any less lonely-and she didn't even know where she stood with Sam. Kirstenna had rather hoped that after the dance...

Well, maybe the Imposter had gotten to him too.

Then there was the Quidditch game. She felt awful about it, because she had not won a game as captain yet. It wasn't her keeping. She was still really good. Nic was one of the worst keepers ever at Sonora from what Kirstenna understood, even though she didn't like to be so mean that way. Besides, Nic seemed to be good at other things, such looking looming and menacing. Of course that was probably part of being part-giant. He also seemed quite excellent at Defense and that was a far more important skill than being a good Keeper.

Unfortunately, Teppenpaw hadn't been playing Crotalus, they'd been playing Pecari and in that game, Sophie had done just as well as Kirstenna. Of course, that might have been because she'd been ready after Arista's long and showy run. The problem wasn't really even Sophie's keeping. It been some stroke of luck that Jade Owen had against Kate. Then to make matters worse, Pecari had had to go and beat Aladren too.

None of that was really her problem, but for her sake and Kate's they had to do better than this next year-Kirstenna didn't know for sure how Kate felt about the whole thing really, but she personally felt awful about it all. She'd go down as a terrible captain and Kate would go down as a terrible Seeker if they didn't win at least the first game next year.

She honestly did not understand why it had changed so suddenly. Maybe the Imposter had somehow decided to favor Pecari rather than her Carey relatives. Or suspected Kirstenna was on to her and wanted to confuse the Teppenpaw. Or she just decided she had a preference for Pecaris for some reason. Perhaps the Imposter saw something in Jade Owen that reminded her of herself. Maybe Jade would become the Imposter's new protegee in evil.

The point was that Kirstenna was sad. She normally didn't let herself this way and when she did, she seemed to have adopted the Glee method of therapy-singing about it. "Maybe this time, I'll be lucky, maybe this time he'll stay..." Kirstenna began in a strong clear voice, slinking across the stage. Maybe Sam would begin showing interest in her. "Maybe this time for the first time, love won't hurry away. He will hold me fast, I'll be home at last..."

Here the Teppenpaw began to get a little choked up. "Not a loser anymore, like the last time, and the time before. Everybody loves a winner, so nobody loved me." That was definitely how Kirstenna felt these days. It wasn't like her but one could only take so much. Oh she was sure there were worse things that people went though, probably even right here in Sonora but that really didn't make things any easier. "Lady Peaceful, Lady Happy, that's what I long to be." Here she put some energy into it even if she wasn't there was any basis in truth to the next part. "All the odds are in my favor. Something's bound to begin..It's gonna happen, happen sometime. Maybe this time I'll win!"

Kirstenna finished her song with wide smile. Singing really did make her feel better. For one thing she was good at it and people couldn't make her feel worse by having regular competitions over it that ended up being somehow fixed by the Imposter.

She heard footsteps and suddenly realized that she was not alone in Room Five. "Who's there?" The Teppenpaw asked, suddenly feeling a little nervous. It wasn't so much that someone might have heard her singing-Kirstenna was rather okay with that, she wasn't ashamed of her singing voice one bit-something just seemed eerie and around here with Imposters and their pet dark creatures and evil ghost-human hyprid spawn and the Beetle Lady-one could never be too cautious.

Here Right Now by Arista Thornton

Arista wasn’t normally into all that singing stuff. That was usually more up Andri or Brielle’s tastes. But after the mess that was the Finals, she thought she’d better write to Brielle. For some reason her younger sister Aubrielle had a way of calming all of the others with her energetic love of theatre and so many things regarding it. Arista had fully run out of ideas to not only help Amira feel better, but also Addi had begun to worry her. For herself, she felt awful about her stupid stunt at the Teppenpaw game. She’d really thought that it would have at least distracted the other team, but that hadn’t worked at all in her favor.

So, the oldest Thornton had written to Brielle.

Her letter was simple, and stated facts and asked the hopeful question, “Hey! B! It’s me, I just hoped that you’d have something to help me out here. We’ve got a lot going on here at school and I think that we all need your talent for theatre and things. We all need to realize that the stupid things that happened aren’t going to stop us from our success. Do you have any songs that may help?” she’d asked. She hadn’t given her younger sister any information about it, but had just received her response.

Held tightly in her hand her sister’s thick reply, she ran to the MARS room. First, she sat down on one of the couches to open up the letter on her own. Brielle’s child-like handwriting looked back at her with what could not have been termed as anything other than a smiley face. On the top of the letter was a trademarked smiley face that only Aubrielle Reece Thornton could come up with. Ris giggled at the stupid grin on the smile and read her sister’s words.

“Ris- Got your letter. This is a musical someone at class introduced me to. I thought it worked. It’s the story from that Patrick Swayze (I know, I probably spelled his name wrong, so sue me!) movie called Ghost. Anyway, I sent you the lyrics of a few of the songs behind my letter. I hope this works for what you’re asking for! LOVE YOU!
Brielle
PS- OH! Audi says to tell you all that she wufs you!”

Arista giggled again and flipped the page to see the song titled, “Here Right Now”. She read through the lyrics and smiled. It was PERFECT! There were other songs behind it, but Arista couldn’t look past that one. If I go into room five, maybe the portraits can teach me how to sing it? she thought to herself and grabbed up her things and practically ran into Room Five.

The red-head stopped short when she saw that it was not empty as she’d hoped. The voice that was singing was very pretty in fact. Ris walked closer to see who it was. Seeing Kirstenna there not only surprised but completely impressed the fourth year. Her Captain had a wonderful voice! Arista wondered why she didn’t use it to her advantage. Arista walked closer, but not close enough to be seen by Cap and smiled as Kirstenna finished her song.

Arista walked a little bit closer. Apparently her footsteps were now heard as Kirstenna asked who was there. Coming out of the shadows of the room, her red hair flying behind her in the swift breeze. “Just me Cap. That was really pretty! I didn’t know you could sing so well!” Arista said to her friend and favorite Keeper.
