Work, rest and play. by Elly Eriksson

It was a Saturday. Saturday, and Elly had spent all day catching up on homework. She didn’t understand quite how it had happened – she was sure she had done plenty during the week – but suddenly it seemed as though every second of her day was already filled.

Having completed her assignments, Elly stretched out on her bed and turned to look up at the ceiling. She preferred to do her work lying on her bed – that was how she had done it at home, before Sonora. It was comfortable, plus it reduced the number of potential distractions. However, her work was far from done. She still needed to come up with a plot line for her novel, which she would need to start writing very soon, and she still had to write to her Dad and check it was okay for Caedence to stay over the summer. She knew it would be fine, but it was polite to check.

Sighing, Elly collected some more loose sheets of parchments and a pink biro from her bag and headed down to the main commons. The room wasn’t too loud, but not empty, either, which suited Elly just fine. She curled her lean frame up in a free space on the end of a sofa so she could lean on the arm to write. She soon found, though, that she needed something more solid to stop the biro going straight through the parchment. Glancing round the room, her eyes fell on a Quidditch magazine somebody had discarded on the windowsill. Pushing herself up once more, Elly headed over, collected the magazine, and sat back on the sofa. It was a new edition, only a few days old, and Elly hadn’t read it before (she often flicked through the articles of the magazines others left lying around). Deciding she needed a break, Elly began idly flicking through the mag instead, her pen and parchment lying forgotten on the arm of the sofa.

I like that last two! by Irene Liddowe

Irene was heading down to the common room in full grin-mode. Uncle Mike had just written her telling that her with the news that her cousins, Renaye, Josh, and Elaina, would extending their stay another few months. Apparently, Aunt Claera and Uncle Will had decided to take a trip to Ireland to promote their new Blurr 3000 broom. All for the better, though. Irene hadn't actually spoken to Raye since last summer and she missed her best friend.

When Irene entered the commons, she headed over to couch where Elly, seeker from the Quidditch team, sat reading a Quidditch magazine. Irene took the spot next to her and glanced at the cover.

"Anything good in there?" She asked, gesturing to the magazine.

Sadly the first is often necessary. by Elly

Elly had been idly flicking through the Quidditch magazine for several minutes, reading the odd piece here and there that caught her interest, before she found anything especially mention-worthy. In the advertisements near the back there was a whole page devoted to a store, which was apparently having a sale on its Quidditch accessories. There were many of the same sort, but this one in particular caught Elly’s interest as it claimed 50% off on all gaming gloves. This was perfect! She had been thinking about purchasing some real Quidditch gloves ever since she made the team. She was sure they could improve her performance, not least because her main fault in Seeking was her tendency to drop the Snitch once she’d made contact with it, or to allow it to sail through her fingers altogether. Seeker’s gloves, she knew, would reduce the possibility of either of these mishaps occurring during a game, and therefore increase her team’s chances of winning.

So enthralled in looking at the advert, which showed an assortment of different styles of glove, Elly barely noticed that someone had occupied the seat next to her on the sofa. Hearing the voice address her, though, Elly looked up.

“Oh hi, Irene,” she said, smiling widely at her teammate. “Yeah, there’s this, look.” Elly swung her long skinny legs round so she was sitting face forward, rather than curled up, and put the magazine on her lap, pointing the advert out to Irene. “Sale on Quidditch stuff,” she said, rather unnecessarily because it was a page-sized notice, after all. “I’m going to get some gloves,” she continued, excitedly. “I’ve been wanting some for ages, and it’d be great to have them before the next game.”

*sigh* This is true... by Irene

Sometimes Irene really had the itch to play in a real Quidditch game. It came and went, but it was like cravings for ice cream or something. Sometimes she just really wanted it. All the same, however, Irene knew that the captains had picked the best people for the job. Really, that last match? Extreme. Irene wasn't sure if she would have done as well with it as the team had. But you never know until you try! She would have to practice over the summer...

“Oh hi, Irene,” “I’m going to get some gloves,” she continued, excitedly. “I’ve been wanting some for ages, and it’d be great to have them before the next game.”

Irene leaned over to look at the ad Elly was showing her. Man, those were some nice gloves! Elly was a great seeker. It was exciting to watch her in the last game and she was looking forward to watching the next one!

"That's a great idea! New gloves for the big game then?" Irene said, picking up her feet to sit indian-style on the couch and turning so she was facing Elly. "You played great at the last match!"

But we can focus on the rest and play if you like. by Elly

“New gloves for the big game then?” Irene said.

“Yeah,” Elly replied. “I’ve already got the money from my Dad, he said he’d buy them for me.” Her mention of her father reminded Elly of the reason she’d come down in the first place. She glanced over her shoulder to notice that her parchment and biro were still on the arm of the sofa, where she had left them. Still, at least she could add in the letter that she had found some gloves. That is, if she ever got round to writing the letter.

“You played great at the last match!” Irene exclaimed.

“Thanks,” Elly replied, grinning broadly. “Though I think I just got lucky, the other Seeker being a reserve first year in her first ever game,” she said, rolling her eyes. How she would have fared if Kaylie had been playing Elly couldn’t say, but she didn’t think the outcome would have been so favourable. “It was so confusing, though, with the time out and everything. People falling off their brooms left right and centre,” she exaggerated, laughing. “I hope the next one will be less eventful.” Elly smiled at Irene. It had to suck being a sub instead of playing, but at least it was better than not being on the team at all. “And I hope you make the team next year,” Elly said kindly, if not entirely truthfully. Naturally she did want Irene to play, but more than that she wanted Mere to play, and the likelihood of either was still rather slim, seeing as none of the current players were likely to resign.

“Right then,” Elly said brightly. “I’m going to see about ordering me some gloves. Then I’ve got to write to my Dad, and then I’ve got to finish my novel plan.” She groaned loudly at her ever-growing to-do list. “Are you doing the Novelling Fury!?” she asked Irene. “My friend Echo set up a group here.”

Sounds good to me! by Irene

“Thanks,” Elly replied, grinning broadly. “Though I think I just got lucky, the other Seeker being a reserve first year in her first ever game,”

"Well, it was your first game too!" Irene said with a smile. "But I know the girl that was seeking. She thinks you were good too!"

“I hope the next one will be less eventful.”

Irene laughed. "Less eventful wouldn't be a bad thing! From last game, less eventful would mean only minor disasters!"

“And I hope you make the team next year,”

Irene smiled at Elly. "Thanks," she said. "If not, though, reserve isn't that bad at all."

“Are you doing the Novelling Fury!?” she asked Irene. “My friend Echo set up a group here.”

"I would like to! I'm not the best writer, but, you know... I'd like to give it a try!"

Irene did want to do the Noveling Fury!. It sounded like fun and she knew some people in it. She would probably show up for the next meeting. You never know until you try, right?

Great! by Elly

“You should give it a try,” Elly replied to Irene. “Echo’s really enthusiastic about it. I didn’t do it last year, but Caedence did, and Saul,” (Elly knew that Irene would be familiar with these two of her friends, seeing as they were on the team, too) “and they had fun. You don’t even have to show anyone what you write, either,” Elly continued, trying, on Echo’s behalf, to convince Irene to join the Fury. “You can write about anything you want. Actually, that’s the trouble I’m having – I just don’t know what to write about!” she said, laughing. “I’m supposed to be planning it now, but I got distracted,” she said, gesturing at the magazine.

Elly wasn’t the most creative of people. Sports were her forte, things with rules and simple instructions. She guessed that was why she was great at potions, with their easy-to-follow instructions, but poor at more creative subjects, like charms. So far all she had come up with were the names of her characters, and no plot at all. Saul had suggested she use runes to plan her story, as he had done, but Elly didn’t know anyone who had a set of runes to ask. Also, she wasn’t convinced it really worked – Saul was notoriously good at getting the wrong end of the stick, after all. “There’s a kick-off day in the gardens on the first of next month. You should come,” Elly said, smiling.

OOC: I think this may be stretching fuzzy time to its limits, but whatever :D

Woo! by Irene

OOC: Eh, its okay.

“You should give it a try,” Elly replied to Irene. “Echo’s really enthusiastic about it. I didn’t do it last year, but Caedence did, and Saul and they had fun. You don’t even have to show anyone what you write, either,”

Honestly, Irene thoguht she would definitely give it try. Why not? She liked stories. She'd read plenty of them! She could easily try writing them. Key word: TRY.

"Yeah," Irene said to Elly. "I think I'm going to give it a try."

“There’s a kick-off day in the gardens on the first of next month. You should come,”

Irene nodded, smiling at her friend. "Definitely! It sounds like fun!"

Irene hoped she didn't fail horribly at this whole writing thing... She knew what she wanted to write about, but would she do it justice? Write what you know... Okay, then. She knew about this. Irene would just have to cross her fingers and pray that it worked!

Wrapping it up. by Elly

“Okay, great!” Elly said, grinning from ear to ear as Irene said she’d give the Fury a try. She was sure that Echo would be pleased she had encouraged another member to join the ever-growing group. It was also the push she needed to get back to planning her own story, or she’d have nothing to write, come the kick-off day.

“Well, sadly I still have work to do,” Elly said, rolling her eyes. It really did seem as though it was a never-ending battle to get everything done. She didn’t know how the older years coped with doing extra subjects on top of what she was doing already. “I’m gonna order some gloves, and plan my novel, and write to my Dad,” Elly told Irene, checking each item off with her fingers. “Then maybe if I’ve got some time left – which is doubtful – I might pop down to the pitch. Maybe see you later?” Elly asked, before turning away and re-gathering her parchment and biro. Back to work again.
