[first morning of midterm] IT'S SNOWING! by Elly Eriksson

The morning that Elly had been waiting for – the first day of midterm – had arrived. Elly wasn’t especially looking forward to going back home, except that it would be nice to see her Dad again. The break from lessons was also welcome, but neither of these were the reasons Elly had been so eagerly anticipating this moment. For a few weeks now Elly had been practising a fabulous charm, and she was about to demonstrate her genius spell work to the rest of her house.

Elly got up and dressed faster than she ever had before in her whole year and a half at Sonora. She had packed last night, and only left out her clothes for today. Elly hurriedly dressed in her old black jeans and bright green t-shirt, and tied a red sweater around her waist. Hastily grabbing her wand from her bedside table, Elly swept the room with eyes making sure everything was packed. She carefully picked up Custard from her pillow and headed down to the common room.

There were already a couple of people in the house commons, but Elly didn’t mind; her roommates had all already seen her practise this particular spell after all. Settling Custard carefully on the arm of a big puffy chair (the puffskein purred in delight at the feel of the fabric), Elly retrieved her wand and took a calming breath.

Venefi Cadocus!” She incanted clearly, aiming her wand directly in the centre of the common room ceiling. The spell was well practised, so Elly was delighted when not surprised when delicate white, powdery snow began to fall softly from the ceiling, fading and the disappearing completely about a foot from the ground. It was so pretty – like a real winter wonderland! Elly giggled, hoping the snow would last at least until part way through midterm, if not the whole holiday.

Taking one last look, Elly skipped towards the exit, heading down to the Hall to pass Custard over to Josiah for the holiday. “Merry Christmas!” she called over her shoulder as she left.

Going back to Sundance! by Echo Elms (with Brett Hodges)

Echo paused at the threshold, his fake leather bag slung over his shoulder and a brown and yellow scarf under a corderoy coat, and surveyed the room one last time. Coat? Check. Boots? Check. Sneakers? Check. Favorite sweater? Check. Transfiguration book? Check. Books for fun? How much room did he think he had? If there was anything else he needed it wouldn't fit in the small overstuffed bag anyway.

"Bye, Matt!" he called and closed the door behind him. That was it then. Brett was waiting for him in the snow at the bottom of the stairs with his red duffle bag.

In the snow? Echo squinted at it. His eyes must be worse than he thought. It didn't snow indoors. He jumped the last three steps and stopped, looking up.

"Whacked out, isn't it?" Brett said, holding out his arms. There was no accumulation -- it was an illusion that passed right through his fingertips.

"Like whoa," Echo agreed. So Brett decided he was talking to him again. That was good. "Look, about... sorry."

Brett shrugged. Okay, so he wasn't over it but he was going to pretend he was. Whatever. "Let's just go home, okay?"

"Sure." They had it set up. They were going to claim that Brett's and Echo's parents had coordinated it so they were coming into the airport the same day: Echo from a boarding school in Arizona, Brett from his father's house in California. That way they could carpool. The Sundance kids were going to meet them that night at Brett's place.

"Don't you think we should at least tell them we're at the same school?" Brett asked as they lugged their stuff through the Pecari snowstorm.

"I was thinking that too," Echo said, "but isn't kinda suspicious?"

"Yeah," Brett agreed, "But in the long run it's probably easier. I mean, if we're gonna be cutting in on each other's stories and stuff. That'd be more suspicious, y'know? How would I know your girlfriend if I'm all out in California and stuff?"

"Right," Echo said stepping out of the Commons, "and how would you know my girlfriend if I don't have one?"

Brett grinned, following, "Yeah, you just keep saying that."\n\n
