Waiting for Caedence by Elly Eriksson

Elly headed straight to the girls’ dormitory as soon as possible. She’d overheard bits of a conversation on the wagon back to school and wasn’t sure she liked the sound of it. She hadn’t gleaned much over the bumpy, overcrowded ride, but it sounded like Caedence had got herself into some kind of trouble with some of the older students. Elly knew that interfering was a really bad habit of hers, and she really tried to avoid it wherever possible, but Caedence was her friend. If she was in trouble, Elly certainly wasn’t going to stand by a watch from the sidelines.

Elly paced the floor at the end of her bed, nervously playing with the shiny black wand pouch she’d handmade for Caedence over the holiday. She knew she was nervous because she was pacing and fidgeting, but she wasn’t sure really why she was nervous. Caedence could be a bit intimidating at times, but Elly was pretty sure their friendship was past that stage. All she was worried about was that she might accidentally end up hurting Caedence’s feelings by insinuating she couldn’t take care of herself.

Elly hoped Caedence would come soon so she could relax again – she had so been looking forward to coming back to Sonora. Elly chewed her lip and, hearing footsteps approach, looked up at the door.

Caedence

I finally arrive by Caedence

Caedence was in sort of a daze. The past few days, she had been trying desparately to study and master new spells. Much to her dismay, she failed. Now she had a duel with a girl at least two years older, and she had only two spells of her own. What to do?

She wanted to get some things out of her trunk, and maybe see if either of her roommates were there. It wasn't much, but Caednece had bought them both neat hair clips. Elly's was a glittery red-and-orange, and Meredeth's was blue-and-gold. She didn't care weither or not they liked it. At least, she wouldn't admit it, but her mother told her it would be nice. She had sent a note to Caedence the day before holdays started.

Sorry to hear that you wont be staying over Christmas. I think you should send us a neat trinket from the wizzarding world! Your two roomates would be so pleased if you gave them something too! Why not? -Much love, Mom...P.S. Dad sends his love as well

Along with the note, her mom had sent her a box full of fudge and peanut brittle, only the former of which CAedence liked. Also, the letter put her in a bad mood since her father was added as an afterthought; as if he didn't care, but her mom wouldn't want her to know that.

It was in this nervous-happy-sad-angry mood that Caedence entered the room. She was met by the sight of Elly pacing away. "Are you a tiger, are are you waiting for someone? Hey, I bought this for you so happy holidays." She handed Elly her clip, but offered no smile. Roomate or not, Caedence wasn't in a smiley mood. "So what's up, oh Elly? Be quick will you? I'm on my way out to the gardens to...uh...walk." She finished, her excuse sounding rather lame.

OOC: you can still stop her if i have Caedence admit and/or you HAPPEN to take it into your own hands. \n\n

Better late than never by Elly

OOC: Fuzzy time is great! I'm in the gardens, too, so we'll just see how it goes :)

BIC:

The dormitory door opened and Caedence strolled in. Elly stopped her pacing to greet her friend, but was cut off before she even began by Caedence’s snappy address. Are you a tiger, or are you waiting for someone? Hey, I bought this for you so happy holidays.

Elly started to stammer her thanks as she accepted the gift from Caedence: a glittery hair clip. Before Elly could present her own gift in return, Caedence had already started talking again. So what's up, oh Elly? Be quick will you? I'm on my way out to the gardens to...uh...walk.

Caedence wasn’t acting normal. Sure, she could be snappy and waspish and unfriendly and guarded, but not usually all at the same time, and hardly ever to Elly.

Elly took advantage of the break in Caedence’s speech and was finally able to get a word in. “Caedence, calm down. I just wanted to give you this,” Elly said as she extended her hand to Caedence, offering the now slightly crumpled home-made wand pocket. “I handmade it so it’s not brilliant. It’s to keep your wand in.” Elly smiled; a friendly, disarming smile rather than her usual manic grin.

“I, uh… I also wanted to talk to you about something. I heard that you’re planning on duelling one of the older students.” Elly chose her words carefully, unwilling to upset or irritate Caedence any further than she apparently already had been before entering the dorm. “I was wondering if maybe I could dissuade you from your walk, or maybe if you’d accept my company on your walk in the gardens.” Elly smiled coyly. She decided she wasn’t interfering, just offering assistance, and that was perfectly acceptable.

Well, late can lead to sticky plot lines! ^_^ by Caedence

Caedence breathed in heavily at the girl's reaction to her mood. Of course Caedence was nervous, but was she that nervous? After all, it was just a duel with some stupid pureblood, nothing to worry. Then why did her skin look so pale? Why was her knuckles so bleached against the wood of her wand?

"Than-"she began to say acepting the gift. It was rather nice, she'd have to admit, but Elly's next statement cut her off short. A notch of irritation graced her features. Did Elly think Caedence to be so incompetent at magic? Sure, the only spell she learned in class was how to turn a match into a needle, but still...

"I do not need company. And you needent worry about my duel. Its my buisness Elly. Besides, its a long story that isn't really worth retelling." She stated flatly. Though the fear in her eyes betrayed her feelings that she wished that Elly could come. Before she could stop it the words came out of her mouth "I'm nervous, really, I dont know enough....." She trailed off, then suddenly snapped back to reality. Her armor was back on, she cleared her throat, and said, "I-I mean, learned enough control. I'm nervous I might hurt that pureblood." It wasn't a convincing story, and the quaver in her voice betrayed her lie.

She smoothed out the wrinkles in the bag. The material felt nice, and the black did work good for Caedence. What use it would be, She didn't know since she usually just slipped her wand in her book bag or in a pocket. She apreciated it none-the-less. Using it as an excuse to change subject, she quickly said, "Nice job on it; I like it. It looks nice, thanks." \n\n

I think we've sorted it now :) by Elly

It was as Elly had suspected – Caedence did take offence at her offering to help. Still, Elly thought, I tried. Now at least I know she doesn’t want me to interfere.

Elly felt bad, though. Caedence was anxious, nervous, possibly upset, and she still didn’t want Elly’s support. That was her choice though, right? At least she knew help was available if she decided to accept it.

Elly was pleased when Caedence changed the subject to her present, and was even happier that she seemed to like it. Elly relaxed a bit, though not completely, and grinned. “You’re welcome.”

There was an awkward pause in which Elly could tell Caedence was still thinking about the duel. Determined to keep her grin in place, she said, “Well, good luck with your walk.” She wanted to give Caedence a hug, but her instincts told her no, so she settled for brushing her arm in a vaguely comforting way. “And uh – I’ll see you when you get back.” Elly tried to keep smiling but she wasn’t sure it was working. She just felt awful for letting Caedence go off on her own. It didn’t seem like something a friend would do.

Yes, now we're on the same page by Caedence

Caedence gave a weak grin. This Elly couldn't help being nosy. Caedence didn't mind so much, to be honest. Admitting it was one thing, even to her herself, but deep down she did apreciate it. "Good luck? Heh, as if I'll need it! Just...dont follow me. You understand? Dont! I know you Elly! I know you'll follow as well! Dont do it, you hear!? First, it is a...walk having to do with two ruined honors, and that may look like I need a second. Number two, I dont want you to get in the way" Her words sounded harsh, especially the last, but Caedence knew she'd understand.

Turning around, she slipped Elly's present in her bedside table's drawer. Then she took a deep breath, stood tall, and turned to the door. She had complete confidence in Elly to not follow. If she did...well Caedence wouldn't then be responsible. The place were Elly had brushed her arm tingled and it felt like her hand was still there. Commanding the butterflies to stop dancing in her stomach she checked the time. It was almost noon. With a nod to Elly, she left for the gardens. \n\n
