Saul Pierce was back in the Common Room early. He'd gone for breakfast way before normal so he'd be sure to be back before any of the new kids got there, looking all confused, trying to find their first class. He did this because he'd reached the conclusion that it was his responsibility as a second year to show them how to get there. He was older and wiser and experienced, now, after all.
So he was there in the Common area, twenty minutes before class was to begin, calling out to every kid he didn't recognized from last year, "Hey, you a firstie? Need me to show you how to get to Care of Magical Creatures?" This was made much simpler for him because this year the first and second year class were combined, so it wasn't like he was going out of his way or anything. He had to be there anyway.
"Firsties, foremoremost, get in line!" he called out, even when there were older students wandering through the area. Had to keep in practice, after all. He'd seen vendors at fairs do the same thing. Made them look busier or something. "Care of Magical Creatures tour leaving in five minutes!"
During a lull when nobody new was passing through, he decided to make nice with the kiddies. If he was going to mentor them, it was a good idea to develop a rapport. "Hey, I'm Saul Pierce, and I'll be your tour guide this morning. Does anyone have any questions about the school or the class we'll be visiting today?"\n\n
The moment Echo entered the Common Room, he was assaulted by a boy claiming to know how to get to their first class. It was to be Care of Magical Creatures, and though Echo hadn't the faintest idea where it was, he was all for finding it himself. But then he thought that if this guy was so keen on leading him right to it, well... it seemed simpler to just let him. That, and there didn't seem to be a choice involved.
So Echo lined up with the other first years -- firsties -- and looked for Elly and Meredith. He wondered if maybe he shouldn't have been so friendly with them the night before. Maybe suddenly and inexplicably they would hate him after not having seen him for a full twelve hours. Girls did things like that.
But now the older student was talking. "Hey, I'm Saul Pierce," he identified himself, "and I'll be your tour guide this morning. Does anyone have any questions about the school or the class we'll be visiting today?"
"Oh! I do," Echo said, not raising his hand. He remembered belatedly but he still wasn't sure if he had been supposed to or not. He hadn't actually talked to an older student yet -- getting yelled at by association with Elly's big mouth didn't count. "What's the teacher like?"\n\n

The answer to your question is "Yes"

Saul grinned cheerfully at the kid who volunteered to ask the first question. That was alway the toughest one to elicit. Second and third questions always came easier, after the ice had been broken. It wasn't even a tough question for Saul either. More an opinion question than anything else.
"Professor Ki-juice-ski," Saul said, stumbling only a little over the difficult name. He was pretty sure he was at least close on the pronounciation. Spelling was another story, but hopefully they wouldn't ask for that because aside from the K at the front and ski at the end, he didn't have a clue. "She lets folks call her Professor K," he added, because a lot of people did, including him. "Or Kiva, too, which is her first name." That was rarer, mostly because most people found it a little weird to call a teacher by her first name, but it was an option, so Saul wasn't going to shirk his duty to inform.
"She's pretty cool. Her classroom is outside and doesn't have desks, so she runs it a bit more informally than everyone else does. She's pretty easy going unless you do something to upset the animal she's showing off that lesson. You'll get some homework, but she's not a tough grader and there's not huge amounts or anything. Does that cover what you wanted to know? Oh, she's pretty young, as far as adults go. She's more like a Cousin than an Aunt."
Of course, there was distinct difference between Saul's definition of cousins and aunts, and the rest of the world's definitions, but it did not occur to him to explain that difference. What he meant was, of course, that she didn't seem the type to have had children yet. He thought his point seemed obvious enough.\n\n

Elly didn’t sleep well her first night at Sonora. Her nervousness had worn off by now, but she still had difficulty sleeping in a new place for the first time. A rather large yawn escaped her as she made her way down to the common room; her eyes dopey and hair like a bird’s nest but smile fixed firmly in place.
When she reached the common room, Elly noticed that a few students had gathered together. Guessing by their height and collective shuffling, Elly assumed most of these students were first years like herself. She saw that one guy seemed to be talking to them, so she headed over to see what was going on.
"She's pretty cool. Her classroom is outside and doesn't have desks, so she runs it a bit more informally than everyone else does. She's pretty easy going…”
Elly guessed he was talking about a teacher, which was good, because she, whoever she was, sounded okay. Elly much preferred teachers who were less strict and more laid back as they were less likely to put her in detention. Elly peered round and saw that this boy, obviously an older student, was talking to Echo. Elly flashed him one of her biggest, friendliest smiles.
When the older boy had finished talking, Elly said, “Hi, I’m Elly Eriksson,” she held out her hand for the boy to shake and noticed that she was easily as tall as him. “I just came down, were you telling us about the teachers or something? From looking at the staff table last night, none of them seem any fun. What’s your name?” Elly carried on in her usual rambling manner. She wiped some sleep from her eyes with her knuckles and stood grinning at the older student. \n\n

Well, wasn't that disappointing? Not only did he have to repeat himself, but he wasn't even taller than all the new kids. Though that shouldn't have surprised him too much, after having Guenther in his class last year. Saul doubted he'd ever be taller than that guy was at eleven. Oh, well. He was taller than enough of them to make up for it. And he was taller than at least one fourth year, too, which was pretty cool. Of course, that wasn't really saying much with Zack. Aladren was a wacky house for height. Everyone seemed to be either way tall or way short.
"Yeah," he answered the girl's question after giving her hand a good shaking. A handshake said a lot about a person, so Saul's was good and theatric with lots of double-handed hearty pumping. Most people only shook his hand once, which told him he was really memorable, too. It was important to be memorable.
"I was talking about Professor Ki-juice-ski, the Care of Magical Creatures teacher. That's the first class you've got today. It'll be shared with us second years this year. Last year we got to study fuzzballs for our first lesson, but I don't know if it's going to be the same now that it's shared with an older class.
He raised his voice as he spotted another newcomer to the Common Area, and waved them over, "And for those of you just joining us now, I'm Saul Pierce, a Second Year. I'll be your tour guide to today's first and second year combined class of Care of Magical Creatures. We'll be leaving in three minutes, so I should have time to answer maybe one or two more questions before we go. Anybody?"\n\n
