It didn't take long for Marian and the first years to reach the labyrinth gardens, or the hedge that acted as the door to the Pecari common room. After muttering the password ("Mud storms and blizzards and floods, oh my," a joke probably none of the first years and only the Muggle-born and half-blood sections of the older students would understand), she watched as the hedge slowly pulled away, opening into the common room.
She decided not to immediately start with the speech, instead giving the first years a chance to look around. In the couple of minutes that followed, she settled herself on one of the armchairs, and, once the students had begun chatting among themselves again, coughed a time or two to regain attention.
“My name is Professor Connell, and I am the Pecari head of house and the potions teacher. This, for those of you who haven’t realized it yet, is the Pecari common room. As you have just seen, all you need to do to enter is to state the password to that particular hedge, and you will be allowed in. Password changes are made periodically, and will be posted on the message board by the door, along with any other pertinent information, so be sure to check there before leaving the common room each day.” She pointed towards a bulletin board before continuing.
“There are a few school rules that need to be mentioned before anything else. First, curfew is strictly at 10 o’clock every night, so be sure to be back in the common room by then. Some teachers are stricter than others about it,” she shrugged, “but it is one of the more important rules. Also, do not go looking for the other houses’ common rooms, nor should you show them your own. It’s just asking for trouble, some of the time.
“Now, the girls’ dormitories are up the stairs to the right, and the boys’ is to the left. If you attempt to go up the wrong stairs, then the stairs will turn into a slide of sorts, and you will be dropped back down into the common room. My office is the door between the two stairs, so if you ever need me, feel free to knock. If I’m not in there, then I’m probably in my classroom. Now, are there any questions before you lot go off to bed?” \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It was a strange feeling that engulfed Grim as he entered the common room. He tried hard to memorise the password - the last thing he wanted was to be stuck in the maze of gardens overnight. This would be his home for the next three years, if he wasn't expelled beforehand. He wanted to make it last.
Professor Connell seemed calm and benign, as she told them not to enter other people's common rooms. He certainly wouldn't be letting other people in the Pecari Room, but he had an inner desire to see the other three. Partly out of curiosity, the other part to cause mischief...what was wrong with wanting to see everything?
The professor continued, 'If you attempt to go up the wrong stairs, then the stairs will turn into a slide of sorts, and you will be dropped back down into the common room'. Grim's face lit up, forgetting the last six weeks of lectures from his mother. He wanted to test out this slide - not to get into the girls room (ugh, cooties) - but because it sounded like a lot of fun, particularly for the boys. His hard times were floating away.
She asked whether they had any questions...his immediate thoughts went to quidditch. He raised his hand.
'Excuse-moi Madame,' he asked. 'Are first years allowed to play quidditch?'
Stephen, not having had to wait around for Professor Connell to show him the way, was lazing around in the commons when the first years arrived with his head of house. He hadn't yet attempted the stairs which led to the seperate corridors which in turn led to the seperate boys and girls dorms, but he did look at them in surprise when he heard Connell's speech. They looked the same. He looked at Connell... and then a slow smile grew on his face.
He bounded to his feet and raced over to his Head of House, clapping wildly.
"Well done, Professor!" He congratulated her genuinely and enthusiastically. "You almost got me then too." He grinned, shaking his head in wonder. "Firsties," he addressed the new Pecari's, "Connell is an absolutely brilliant professor. I bet old Grump - sorry Professor, I mean Acting Headmaster Bulla - wouldn't start of the year by pranking the new Teppenpaws. What really happens is much cooler than a silly slide. It-" he paused. "Wait, no, it's better if I show you all, right? Much cooler. Plus, haven't been on the corridor ride in months! Okay firsties. Watch me!"
Stephen raced up the stairs and paused dramatically at the platform where the two paths seperated. "That way is the boy's corridor," he said, pointing. "And this way..." he turned and ran full pelt at the corridor. Right as he hit the entrance he disappeared from where he had been. A fraction of a second later there was a sound of displaced air above the centre of the room.
"Oomph." Thump.
Stephen stood up and dusted himself off. "That's the corridor ride. Take the wrong turn, and you get to try it out too," he winked at them. "Running works best for a good landing."\r\n\r\n
