I'm dreaming of a calm Christmas by Mia

Mia lugged her large suitcase from the second year girls’ dormitory and down the stairs leading to the Pecari Common Room. Silk, as usual, padded along beside Mia’s feet while the girl struggled a little. She finally got her suitcase over to one of the tables and let it go from an inch up. It landed with a light thud on the ground. Mia sat to rest her feet for a minute though she only really had a minute or two to spare if she wanted to get to the wagons in time. She had to do some major last minute packing that morning since she was up half the night worrying and forgot to pack. Silk jumped up into Mia’s lap and Mia pet her while thinking about why she felt so worried. Her mother’s letter sprang to the front of her mind, clear as day.

Dear Mi,
Leo says hey, Isaiah grunts because he’s playing videogames and your father isn’t here at the moment. So how are things, sweetie? I’m glad to hear you’re alright after that dust storm. You’ll have to tell me more about your Care of Magical Creatures class. That must be fun for you since I know you like animals. Oh and no Mia, my friend’s name is Kira, not Kiva. Anyway, sorry if you were going to change your mind, but this Christmas I need you to come home. There are some things to discuss and the whole family needs to be there. I can’t wait to see you and hear about the ‘other things and more.’ Hopefully it’s nothing dangerous.
[Mia decided not to mention the raining mud and all that until she saw her mother in person.] We miss you Mia. I’m still getting over the fact that there’s a witch in our family. Don’t let what Isaiah says get to you. And don’t mind your father either. You know how he is. I love you so much Mia. I’ll be waiting when the wagon lands…well there’s something that will never sound normal to me. And I’ll see what I can do for Silk.

With all my love,
Mom

What was there to discuss that involved a family meeting? She just hoped it wasn’t what she was dreading because she had been trying her hardest to prevent that for a long time now. Mia sighed and placed Silk on the floor again as she got up and took hold of the suitcase handle. Silk had other plans though. She jumped back on to the chair and curled up. Mia saw this and rolled her hazel eyes. She knew what her cat was up to and although she needed to get Silk off the chair, she empathized.

“Silk, come on.” She said quietly so as not to draw unwanted attention. “I know you don’t like the wagon, but it’s the only way to get home.” When she saw that Silk wasn’t going to listen she changed tact. “Alright fine, you stay here in the muddy, broken school without a Christmas present. I’m going home. Merry Christmas, Silk.” Mia was making an empty threat and she had a feeling that Silk knew it too, but lucky for her, her cat didn’t like being separated from Mia for long. She wouldn’t risk being left behind. Silk jumped off the chair and followed after her owner who was now a few paces ahead, dragging her suitcase along. Mia looked down when Silk caught up and grinned.

“Oh, so you are coming home, are you?” Mia laughed a little “Well come on, the faster we get on the wagon, the sooner it can leave and the sooner we get home.” Silk seemed to do a bit of a skip at Mia’s statement. It came out as an odd stunted leap and Mia raised an eyebrow.

“And I have to remember to find Professor K after break. Maybe she can tell me why you act so weird.” Mia half joked and Silk meowed indignantly, but still followed close behind. She only half joked because she really was curious about why Silk acted so differently from other cats. She had been like that since Mia got her on her seventh birthday. An odd story she still wondered about from time to time.

Mia didn’t know why her cat was so smart and why she could understand her as if she spoke English, but she wasn’t complaining. Silk was one of the few left in her Common Room who she was on good terms with. Mia scooped up her cat with one arm so she was comfortable across her shoulder and dragged her suitcase with the other. The two made their way quickly out of the Pecari Common Room.\n\n
