Stephen Baxter & Ash Craven

Early mornings by Stephen Baxter & Ash Craven

Stephen ran into the second year boys dorm, breathless with excitement. It was the first day of classes, but that wasn’t why he was in such a rush. No, more important matters had been brought to his attention. Running up to the lump still half hidden under its bedclothes, he shook it vigorously.

“Ash! Ash, wake up! You’ll never guess – you’ll never guess what I found! It’s brilliant and it’s going to be ours. For all the boys. We,” he said, still prodding the lump in the hope that it would make it listen, “are going to have a fort and it’s going to be for boys only. We need a refuge that is for us only – one that isn’t here anyhow. One in the wild. It’s got a moat already and everything!”

"COOL!" exclaimed Ash, leaping out of bed. He was pulling off the top of his Bart Simpson pajamas when Stephen manically grabbed him by the arm, dragging him towards the door, prattling all the way.

“But we need to get to work, to make it ours before the girls catch on. I’m going to try and round up a couple of the other guys. I reckon that short smart kid from Aladren and…. um… the guy who was the captain of the other Quidditch team. Jake. I bet he’d be in on this.”

"Ok," said Ash, pulling his arm out of Stephen's, "But I need to get dressed first." He grabbed yesterday's t-shirt off the floor and pulled it on, pulling out a pair of jeans from under his bed.

“Come on Ash! Time’s a-wasting!” It was all he could do to stand almost still. Stephen was excited, Stephen was antsy and Stephen was filled with a definite knowledge that if they didn’t move fast, the girls who permeated this place would beat them to it.

"Ready!" said Ash, rolling his eyes. He'd barely taken five seconds. He hurried out of the dorm after Stephen, eager to see this great guys' only place. He threw a slightly guilt ridden look over his shoulder towards the girls' stairs. He didn't want to ask, because it proved he cared about her, and besides, she was a girl... But Sorrie counted as one of the guys. And he knew he shouldn't be leaving her out of this.

Stephen, reaching the door, looked back to see Ash also looking back... at the girl's corridor.

“Oh man... I forgot! Ash, you get Sorrel. I'll go see if I can find that Aladren kid and we'll meet you at the gardens. Ten minutes, OK?"\n\n

Ash and Sorrel

Ash tried not to grin with relief, knowing he wouldn't have to find a subtle way to get Sorrel in, or fight her corner with Stephen. He turned and headed back to the bottom of the girls' corridor. He paused. Sorrel had been able to get up their's. But, if her theory was right and it was because she was a boyish girl, then he did not want to be able to get up the girls' corridor. What would that say about him? But it was an emergency... Perhaps if the screaming-until-blue-in-the-face method failed, he might try.

"SORREL!" he yelled up the stairs, loud enough to wake anyone who was still trying to sleep. There was a moment's pause...

"WHAT?" came the reply.

"Get your BUTT down here!"

For all that she liked spending time with Ash, she liked pushing his buttons more. Indeed, most time spent with him was devoted to it, or just plain old kicking him. However, if she had to chose one out of seeing him or irritating him, it would be the latter.

"Why?" she called. Ash groaned. Of all the times she could pick that question, she chose the one where he couldn't answer.

"Just fricking do it!" he yelled, not caring if he got told off either for shouting or using 'obscene' language. He hated the stuffed up old prudes who though 'frick' was shockingly rude.

"Make me," called Sorrel smugly, thoroughly enjoying herself and knowing that she was winning. She could practically see Ash's face turning red and his teeth gritting.

"SORREL!" he screeched, hoping that she would somehow realise how important this was and just, for once, bloody well co-operate. "Just... fricking... I'll... I'll write home to Mariella and I'll come chasing after you with perfume."

"Low blow, bro... Don't see why I should come out when you say such hurtful things!" she laughed in a sing song voice through the door.

"Because... Just trust me on this!"

Trust him? That caused Sorrel, who had been getting ready all the while Ash had been screaming at her, just in case, to pause and think. Trust... That was a stupid, wussy, weak secrety sharing girl thing. Except in Circumstances. Sometimes it was necessary to just believe that the other one had something cool. There were times when the tough exterior had to be let down just a little bit, because something was more important than it. They'd come up with a way of saying it which didn't sound all girly and gushy like 'do you promise? really?' did.

"TS?" she called hesitantly down the stairs (she had to abbreviate because other people were listening, and it was secret to them). If Ash agreed that he was making that kind of a pact between them - a Twin Swear - it meant he couldn't go back on his word, and just be setting her up or getting her to come down for a power fix.

"YES! Fricking TS! Just get your worthless heinie down here!"

Sorrel slammed back the door and bolted down the corridor.

"About fricking time," he muttered, as Sorrel made him do the Twin Swear hand shake (it was an entirely seperate creation to their secret handshake, which was quite an achievement, as they had thrown most everything into that. The secret handshake was so long, complicated and blatantly-exhibitionist-that-it-defied-the-point-of-being-secret that they had, over the years, broken it down, and used different elements from it for different things).

Once his hand was free again, Ash balled it up and socked his sister in the stomach. She tried not to double over, goldfishing at him, her frown saying it all.

"For keeping me waiting! You'll see why in a minute, you total dofus," he said, grabbing her by the arm and beginning to drag her, seeing as she currently didn't have the breath to go under her own steam. \n\n
