Home seems further away than it is... by Connor Pierce

Connor walked into the Pecari common room with great relief. Everyone at the feast had quickly split into little chatty groups, but he had sat and ate alone. He had never been the best at just striking up conversations. He and Beverly had always stuck together and never saw much need for other friends, but Beverly was stuck back in Austin with their prom queen sister Khrissy and their thickheaded brother Paul while he was here, feeling a lot further from Texas than he geographically was.

It had been a shock when he found out he was a wizard, and the whole fiasco in the dining hall had made things all the wierder. He couldn't blame Paul for ignoring the whole affair as if it and Connor didn't exist, because it was a lot to take in, especially when you were the one living it. Sitting down in a big brown chair, he stared at the fireplace absently and wondered what was happening back home when he heard someone else come in.\n\n

Nah, you just need a better map... by Adam Whitney

Adam had followed one of the older students, presumeably a 4th or 5th year to the Pecari Common Room. Upon seeing the room, Adam's mouth opened wide and his excitement for being here seemed to spill out of him.

This place was everything that Jake had told him it would be. Not just the common room, as Jake was a Teppenpaw and didn't know what the Pecari Common Room looked like, but the school as a whole. Sonora was going to be everything Adam had imagined it and so much more.

His blue eyes were still taking everything in when they fell upon another boy. Without even hesitating, Adam grinned and walked directly up to the boy, "Hi, Name's Adam Whitney, what's yours?"\n\n

You know, that might do the trick... by Connor

Connor looked up, faintly surprised, at the sound of another boy's voice that seemed to be speaking to him. A quick glance around confirmed that there really wasn't anyone else Adam Whitney could be talking to, not to mention that he was looking straight at Connor and waiting for a reply.

"Connor Pierce," he said finally. "Pleased to meet you." He smiled back and racked his brain for something to say. "Nice place, this Sonora," he managed at last. If Sonora did nothing else for him, it would hopefully move him from being a loner to having friends besides his kid sister. "A lot bigger than my family's ranch. Did you know that you were a wizard and all before you got a letter? I had no idea about any of this." It occured to him that he might be saying more than enough to start a conversation, so he shut up and waited for Adam's reply.\n\n

Of course it will! I thought of it after all... by Adam

The smile on Adam's face grew at the mention of the school. Yes, Sonora was perfect. He definitely belong here. And this kid seemed nice too, so maybe even having cool friends wasn't going to be that hard either. Not that Adam every really worried about making friends.

"Yeah, I'm fullblooded. Knew all about the magical world since the day I was born. And yeah, the school's huge. We live in a little Manor, it's nice and all, but it's nothing compared to here. I mean, I'm gonna miss having my own room and stuffy. Plus, my parents aren't gonna be around and I know they'll be writing me all the time," He said this as though it were the most annoying thing in the world, but his smile said otherwise, "But this, this is home." His arms were wide as he gestured around them.

"Didn't you know? Or are you a muggle? I mean, muggleborn? Are you? I've never actually known anyone who was muggleborn? But that is so cool!"\n\n

So, have you got a better map? by Connor

Connor listened to Adam talk, amused. He had always been liable to say things backwards or stumble over his words if he talked for extended periods of time, meaning that he liked being around talkative people. Their chatter meant he didn't have to say as much.

He was more than surprised to hear Adam mention that he lived in a manor as if it were of no consequence. He had never met anyone who was rich enough to live in one, but he had seen plenty of them on his mother's soap operas. All those men were either business tycoons or mafia dons who tended to fake their own deaths and push each other off balconies a lot, but Adam seemed nice enough.

"I reckon my sister Beverly will be the one who writes me a lot," he said. "The others...they're sort of pretending I don't exist." He was glad that Adam asked a question about something else. "No, I didn't know anything before some incognito wizard came to our place and gave me the letter. I had no idea that anything like this was even possible." He frowned, trying to work out what the rest of it meant, but eventually had to ask. He thought he could remember the man with the letter saying something about maggies or muggles or something like that, but he couldn't remember what it had been. "I know I probably sound stupid," he said, "but what's a muggle and a muggleborn?" \n\n

*checks pocket* Yup, sure do! by Adam

"Who's Beverly and why are people pretending you don't exist?" Adam asked the kid, giving him a quick look over to see if there were any visible deformities as to why a person would ignore him. Seeing that there weren't any obvious ones, Adam continued, "So this is all new to you? Are you scared, worried, happy? I don't know how you muggles live your life without magic, seems sort of barbaric if you were to ask me." Adam stated rather quickly.

The fact that he had a lot of energy couldn't go unnoticed to anyone. Most muggle doctors probably would have labeled him with ADHD and sent him home with Ritilin, but since he was a wizard, his parents' excuse was that he was just a normal healthy 11 year old.

"Muggles are people who don't have any magic in them, don't know about magic either. So, your parents are muggles. Muggleborns are what you are. People who were born to those without magic, but have magic themselves." Adam said deciding to finally sit down in a chair across from the other boy. "Some people will call you different, but just ignore them. Mom says that those type of wizards are just worried that the muggleborns will prove themselves better, and therefore more worthy. Anyway, what do you suppose the professors will be like?"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

District map? Contour map? Resouce map? None of the above? by Connor

"Beverly's my sister," he said. "She's..." he paused, wondering how to explain Beverly. There was nothing to compare her to, really. She was herself. "She's different." That would have to do. "Other girls don't like her for some reason, so she hangs around me all the time." It was more complex than that, but Connor didn't think he was eloquent enough to explain it. "The others pretend I'm not there because it's too wierd for them-more than they can take in." He had to work hard to keep from showing how bitter having his own brother tell him flat-out that he was finally too wierd to deal with anymore and his mother flinch whenever he spoke.

"It's all new," he said. "Haven't really gotten over the shock yet. It's like being told Merlin really did set up Stonehenge or something." Connor had already worked out that Merlin probably had erected Stonehenge, but it was the best analogy he could come up with. "My sister Khrissy would agree that we're barbarians, but no one listens to her. We do all right-electricity's a wonderful thing when you don't have magic."

He nodded slowly at Adam's explination of muggles and muggleborns. That sounded sort of like what incognito-guy had said. "Guess I would be a muggleborn, then," he said. "As for the other..." he shrugged. "Every society has its jerks. Dad used to say if they insult you once, politely tell them to get lost. The second time, punch them." He was surprising himself by talking so much, but he was enjoying the conversation. "I don't know much about professors. I've never been to private schools or anything, never mind met a professor. It's the classes I'm worried about. Do you have any idea what sort of things they teach here?"\n\n

erm...any and all? by Adam

Adam frowned when Conner said that people made fun of his sister, Beverly. Adam, himself, was always picked on because his home wasn't the best of homes. Yes, they called it a manor, but it wasn't really. It was really just a large house in desperate need of a paint job. Still, there were many rich snobs that lived around him that always pointed out the fact that his father was a mere office worker in the ministry and his mother worked in a shop. But Adam didn't care. He knew he was better than those that picked on him. Besides, he had people like the Santoros to call his friends.

"Ecklect-what?" Adam asked the kid. He wasn't sure what he was talking about, but muggle things always interested him. "Didn't you ever go to school? If you didn't call them Professors what did you call them?" Adam asked him, surprised by this news. But when Conner asked about the things they were learning, Adam jumped from his seat from excitement,

"Well, I'm sure in charms we'll probably be learning things like the levitation incantation or..or...maybe cheering charms, or how about the incantation to call things to you. What's that called..." Adam paused to think, he had been pacing while he spoke, but stopped that as well, "Doesn't matter. Potions could be anything. Maybe dreamless sleep draught, that would be awesome. And Defense we might learn the STUPEFY spell!" Adam said excitedly, "And the shield charm," He added as an afterthought.

"Erm...transifiguration we'll learn to transform things, Care of Magical creatures is rather obvious, and Astronemy is about the stars." Adam finished with a grin, "Any in particular you're really happy about?"\n\n

My author is a map-reading fanatic by Connor

"Electricity," Connor said, as clearly as he could. "It's...what makes stuff work in my other world. There's these big places where they do something-not sure what-that makes it go through wires to people's houses and stuff. It makes the lights come on and all the appliances run. The wires are sort of like wands-they have special stuff inside them that makes them direct electricity the way wands direct magic, I think. That's how the incognito wizard who explained things to my mom explained it." He felt that wasn't a very adequate definition of electricity, but he had never been planning on leaving the ranch more than was strictly necessary, never mind becoming an electrician.

"Yeah, I went to school back in Austin. We called them 'sir' and 'ma'am' and their title-you know, mister, miss, miz-and their last name. The Headmistress would be Mrs. Marnett at my old school, maybe Dr. Marnett if she had enough degrees."

"Care of Magical Creatures sounds like it might be okay," he said after some thought on Adam's recital about the classes. "I work with horses at home. Horses and German Shepherds, which are probably a lot different than what we'll be learning about in the class. I can't see much magical about a dog. Astronomy might be cool, and Trans-whatever sounds like it could get...interesting." He entertained the notion of turning Khrissy into a turtle briefly, but he seriously doubted they would teach him how to do that and the Sonora agent had said they couldn't use magic at home anyway. "I'm pretty excited about all of it, since I don't know what any of it is.What's a stupefy spell? One that makes people stupid?" \n\n

My author can't read maps well by Adam

Adam listened to Connor talk about ecklec-whatever, with rapt attention. His already large blue eyes were as wide as saucers as he listened. He had no idea what the boy was talking about, something about wires being wands and appliances, but it didn't matter. The entire conversation was fascinating to him.

"You're still suppose to call them 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'," Adam said for Connor's own knowledge and future run-ins with any of the professors. He continued to listen as Connor listed some of the classes that seemed okay with him.

"A crup is like a dog, only it has a forked tail and magical abilities. But it looks just like a dog." Adam said with a grin. "and it's Transfiguration and it is. My parents transfigure things all the time when it's needed and stuff." He couldn't help the laugh that flew out of him when Connor asked what exactly a 'Stupefy' spell was,

"Stupefy is a spell used to knock a person out. You hit them with it and they are knocked out and can't wake up until either the spell wears out or someone says the counter-charm." Adam said in a barely contained voice, "But it would be so cool if there were a spell that made someone stupid!" He said eagerly, thinking of all the kids who had ever poked fun at him.\n\n

Mine can't do road maps-the one useful kind. by Connor

"Thanks for the tip," Connor said. "Professor Whoever, sir-or-ma'am. I think I can remember that." He knew his way of talking and especially his way of talking to anything that he believed to be a girl or woman made him come across as extremely old-fashioned, but he didn't mind. As long as there was a concept of chivalry at all present in the American mind or culture, it would be at least technically polite to call a girl 'Miss' until she gave you permission to use her name. He had borne the brunt of many a joke back home regarding that particular habit of his.

He vaguely remembered reading something in one of his textbooks about magic dogs or something of the like. It was slightly embarrassing, not being able to remember or reason out the things that seemed to be perfectly normal for the denizens of what Beverly had dubbed his new world. She had talked it up into being akin to a Grail Quest or something, and he had sworn for the hundreth time that she'd be a famous writer yet.

He felt as if he had been hit by a spell to make a person stupid when he heard what Stupefy actually did. It made a lot more sense to have a defense spell that knocked a person unconscious, after all. "Most people on who the use of a make-stupid spell could be justified don't need a spell anyway," he said. "They're usually stupid enough on their own." It wasn't a very good joke, but he had never aimed to be a stand-up comedian any more than he had wanted to be an electrician.\n\n
