OOC: This post doesn't require a reply but is open to Abby, since she's Wu's roommate.
BIC: English speaking cultures had a saying, Wu had learned, that “three times the charm”. She had been hoping to find this applicable to her return to Sonora: maybe this time, as her third time starting off the new term, the wagon ride would be better. Unfortunately, that idiom had not been proven true, as stepping off the darn things only solidified the turmoil in her core. The queasiness would pass soon, or so she hoped, at least.
Of course, part of it was probably her: she was terrified for the new school year. Intermediate classes would be a serious step up from the relative ease and forgiveness that accompanied the Beginner levels. And she had to readjust to all the people she would once more be surrounded by, summer spoiled by a huge home where only five people regularly stayed, and all strewn throughout its halls. But worse beyond all that, she had to do better to please her father this year. She had to make connections.
It was hard enough to muster up the courage for a normal, no-pressure, non-societal conversation, but given her lack of available knowledge on the other purebloods at the school, her father insisted she do better to befriend the right sort of students, the Brockerts and Wolseithecraftes and Newells and Careys of the school. Or at the very least, the ones of her year since most of the good families seemed to have one among her class.
Wu was still unsure if she could really call anyone here “friend”, but at least her little peer group didn’t make her feel so much pressure. None of them were the society types, and Sammy and Laila were even Muggleborns. Muggleborns! It was strange, but they felt so much more welcoming, perhaps because their standards of conduct were not nearly as strict, which made them a touch more accepting. Peizhi felt she had more to learn from them.
But the problem was, if she had to make new connections with people from her breeding, she didn’t know if she could maintain these non-friendships. After all, she was quite an introverted little thing, and she didn’t know how much social interaction she could handle. If she used up all her people-energy on these purebloods, would she have time or strength enough for the Donovans or Sammy or even Laila?
She knew the others would surely be meeting somewhere, but Wu wasn’t ready to face them quite yet. Instead, she made a bee-line for Teppenpaw Common Room, and from there to her dorm room. The third year was happy to find herself thus far in solitude, so she went ahead and organized her clothing into her closet and dressers. Hanging things sooner than later would prevent wrinkles, which was otherwise just one more thing to worry about that she did not need.
Wu finished with time to spare before she had to trot back out for the Opening Feast, so she laid gently in her bed, her stomach against the mattress, her face slightly buried in her pillows. She was not particularly sleepy, having transferred to her sister’s home in New York a week ago to adjust to the extreme time change and prevent lag at school, but she was a bit tired. There was a difference. She allowed herself to relax, her guard slipping down, as she breathed slowly and contentedly, soaking in the silence while she could.
The summer holidays for Abby were always spent on both sides of the Mexico-US border. Growing up an only child had at times been boring but now she really cherished the moments when it was just her and her parents. Of course, that was more of a rarity now. The holidays were really the only times she was able to see them and they always involved family gatherings and all sorts. Abby spent most of the summer break surrounded by her many many cousins and other relatives of varying connections to her. She loved her family dearly but there were definitely times where she just wanted to escape, of course taking her mother and father with her.
Doubtless like many other students, Abby was reluctant to be leaving her loved ones behind again but was excited to be returning to Sonora for her third year. She headed to Cascade Hall first of all after leaving the flying wagon, in search of some refreshments. The Teppenpaw was rather glad she didn’t have far to travel to get to the school, compared to many students (especially international students such as her roommate), as she lived in Arizona’s neighbouring state of New Mexico.
Having satisfied her needs without spoiling her appetite for the Opening Feast, the newly-turned third year made her way to her dormitory. In the hall she had had a nice little catch up with Chuck and his sister Emmy-Lou who was in her year and equally as excited about moving up into Intermediates, although probably not nervous about it as well like Abby, but then they had moved off so she did the same.
Abby hadn’t seen her roommate around the school but still wasn’t sure if she would find her in the room they shared. Wu never really said much and Abby had quite quickly gathered that the foreign girl was the shy type but she also wondered if their lack of connection had anything to do with language and culture differences too. Abby wasn’t the most confident of people internally but she was mostly alright at coming across as though she were. She was just a friendly and sociable person and therefore thought it rather a shame that she and Wu hadn’t really got some sort of friendship going over the past two years of living together.
There was the obvious possibility that Wu simply didn’t like her but Abby preferred to think the other Teppenpaw was just… shy. Abby was nice to her and tried to be gentle and not too intimidating so she didn’t really understand why Wu still wasn’t coming out of her shell. Yet as she headed up to her room, Abby hoped that being a third year would somehow make a difference for Wu. As an only child she had been excited by sharing a room with another girl at first but, not that she liked Wu any less because of it, she had been disappointed by the lack of fun happening in the dormitory.
Unfortunately when Abby entered the room, she found Wu Peizhi asleep - which was fair enough considering how far she had to travel. Abby instantly made an effort to move more quietly, not wanting to disturb her resting roommate, but seeing as she was unpacking her things it wasn’t as easy as she’d thought.
