Since coming to Sonora, Jake had faced a problem that most people might have otherwise considered a blessing. Dormitories were divided by House and then further separated by year and sex, but there was only one Teppenpaw fourth year boy at Sonora. His name was Jake Manger. While he wasn’t normally one to use strongly negative words like “hate”, he absolutely hated living by himself. Jake was a people-person and took comfort in another person’s presence, even a silent one.
It was why he and Arnold still shared a room at home--not because of lack of space or anything of that nature, but because he didn’t like sleeping alone. His brother had never expressed a problem with it, although it was probably not something he casually mentioned to his friends. Being sixteen years old and never once having your own room was not something of which people tended to be terribly proud. To that end, Jake didn’t really know if any of Arnold’s friends here knew they still shared a room (Ji-Eun, as the one Arnold obviously most sought to impress, definitely didn’t), so he tried not to mention it either.
But the nights of solitude at Sonora had been hard on Jake. Mostly, he had spent his first three years in the Common Room until he felt tired enough to fall asleep immediately after hitting his mattress, but at the beginning of this year, he had developed an idea. Duncan Brocket in the year above him also didn’t have a roommate, so he had approached him to ask about moving into the same room. Neither he nor the Headmaster when Jake took the idea to him seemed to have a problem with it, and thus, a new roomie-hood was born.
In the passing weeks, Jake had found exactly the comfort he was expecting from the new situation. He actually liked being in his room in the evening because Duncan was there, sometimes having a conversation but sometimes just silently keeping him company. It was nice.
On a particular Friday evening, Jake bounced into histheir room and was pleased to see he was the second to arrive. “Hi, Duncan!” he smiled. “How was your day? Got a lot of homework this weekend?”
Duncan had never shared a room before, always being the only Teppenpaw boy in his year and having more than enough space at home. His house might have been the Sawyer ancestral ranch and a bit older than the standard Brockert manor but that didn't mean it was at all small. There seemed to be enough bedrooms for all the residents-living, dead, house-elf and even equine.
So it was with utter surprise when Jake Manger had asked him about sharing a room. It seemed like Duncan was gaining popularity among the living without even really trying. Liliana liked him, Araceli seemed to, he thought Atlas might somewhat even, and now Jake whom he barely knew had wanted to share a room with him. He'd even gotten prefect. Maybe Duncan had charisma after all. He didn't know that was possible, especially seeing as he considered himself socially awkward. The concept was utterly mind-blowing. Perhaps he had a chance had Head Boy after all, but he still wasn't holding his breath.
He didn't know why the younger Teppenpaw had made this request. Usually people wanted a room to themselves, especially purebloods who were used to that level of privilage. Not that he thought of it so much that way as...just how things were. He'd never known anyone who'd shared rooms outside school.
On the other hand, people sometimes bonded with their roommates. Sometimes that was how friendship groups were made. So all the roommate sets bonded and the people without lacked friends because they couldn't break into any of the cliques and even if they did make a friend, that friend was likely closer to the friends who were his or her roommates.
Fortunately, this was Teppenpaw, and therefore it was hard to imagine anyone being objectionable. Besides, it made Duncan feel kind of...good about himself that someone would choose him as a roommate when they didn't actually have to. They weren't stuck with each other, Jake had chosen him.
He grinned at his roommate. "Well, given we're in all the same classes, I probably have the same homework you do." Duncan laughed a bit, though in a definitely not mocking way.
