Study skills - I don't have them [tag Medic Bailey] by Michael Grosvenor

Michael was not a particularly conscientious boy. He was well-behaved in class, tried (though often struggled) to pull his weight in a group, and handed in his homework on time (mostly). But he was not a good student. He was a nice, safe, middle-of-the-table, quiet-enough-to-overlook piece of classroom furniture who allowed a lot of what was being said to wash over his head. However, he felt even that status was slipping out from under him with the transition to advanced classes. With the exception of Muggle Studies, which he could basically pass by recalling incidents from his childhood, he was struggling. And, although he was not the most conscientious, he did not wish to be a failure, and was aware that he might be rapidly in danger of becoming one.

He had thus arranged to come and see his Head of House, although he was somewhat sceptical about what could be done for him. As far as he was concerned, his predominant problem was that he was kind of thick, and it wasn't like Medic Bailey could change that. Maybe he just wasn't bright enough to do RATS classes but he guessed he could at least be told that, and then he could save himself two years of blood, sweat and tears.

“Alright... sir?” he asked, poking his head round the door at the time he'd arranged. He'd got out of the habit of calling staff 'sir' given that they were all 'Professor.' Except Medic Bailey. And saying 'Excuse me, Medic?' sounded weird unless he was seeing him for that. So, hopefully sir was ok.

“I wanted to talk to you about... um, lessons and stuff,” he explained, as he took a seat. “I don't really feel like I know what I'm doing any more. Like... I have all these free periods now, and I'm supposed to do my own studying but I never know what to do. And don't get me wrong, it's not cos I get it all already, cos I really don't. I have loads I need to learn. And apparently loads of time but they just don't.... mesh. Like we have this huge project for potions, and I don't even know where to start. And then when I don't understand stuff I don't know how I'm supposed to make myself understand it in my own time. Cos if I don't get it, reading it twenty times isn't going to help me. I mean, it might help me memorise it, which will get me a certain way,” he had scraped through the written papers in his CATS by memorising things and then quoting the ones which seemed relevant to the question, “but it won't make me understand it. Can I... can I do anything about any of that, or...?” he trailed off, not really wanting to voice the worry that he'd reached his ceiling level, as far as education was concerned.

I think I can assist you in that! by Medic Bailey

Weddings….weddings were awfully complicated and Dylan was realizing that just as he went over the endless letters and diagrams Cassie had sent over to him. Organizing a wedding was rough stuff and he didn’t understand why women liked it so much. All that it was bringing him was stress and emptying his bank account. All in all, he may have been thinking of stealing his fiancé away and getting married without the hassle of the big celebration. Just the two of them, but he knew Cassie wanted the whole enchilada. Most women always wanted the big cake and white dress, and since he loved her so much he would endure the pain it was causing him.

Dylan sighed and massaged his temples trying to prevent a headache from forming due to all the information that had been handed to him over trivial matters like a color scheme. He didn’t care, he just wanted to marry her and start a new life. It was her dream and she had the right to choose whatever she wanted. He didn’t care. His only dream was marrying her with or without the pomp and circumstance.

Thankfully, he was taken out of his endless torture by the voice of one of his charges. Micheal had arranged a meeting with him a few days ago, and Dylan was happy to comply. He didn’t know what he needed or wanted, but he was sure it didn’t have to do with any medical dilemma. No one arranged a meeting to talk about health issues and if Michael suffered from something then he was sure the headmistress or his parents would have owled him.

“Come in, Micheal,” he said with a smile. The medic was happy about this time with the student since it would help him stop thinking about his impending doom--- erm nuptials.

The explanation of why he was here followed soon after his greeting. Michael wanted to talk about lessons? For a brief second he was confused but then remembered he was Tepp’s Head of House. He laughed a little at his own stupidity and let the boy continue talking.

Dylan smiled after he was done, “Michael that is something everyone goes through. Upper level classes can be confusing, especially if you don’t know what you want to be after you leave school.” The medic was a shrink, or had the degree to help Michael sort himself out, but he could help. He had gone through that same thing a long time ago. It was just a matter of knowing and realizing your strengths.

“Studying by yourself is hard, especially if you don’t have a guide to help you skip through those big stones. Do you know what you want to do after you graduate?” he asked curiously trying to get a better understanding of the student sitting in front of him.

OOC: sorry for being so late :(

I really hope so by Michael Grosvenor

Something everyone went through? Michael thought of the dozens of Aladrens and other students he'd seen sailing through the school, seemingly unscathed. Sure, some of them stressed obsessively but only because they thought anything less than an O was a tragedy. Could any of them, or the students from magical backgrounds who glided through so self-assuredly, have really thought, underneath all that, that they were actually too thick to be in school? He really doubted it.

“A bit...” he said, when Medic Bailey asked him whether he'd considered life after Sonora. In fact, he'd had an idea in mind ever since he'd started the school. Perhaps it had never really been a formal career plan, or at least not until more recently, but it was how he always pictured himself as a grown wizard. He wondered whether it was just down to the fact that it was one of the first wizarding careers he'd come across but if that was the case, surely he wouldn't care so much about the thought that he might not be up to it.

“I thought about working with Muggle stuff. Technology. Like, there's guys that try to adapt Muggle technology to be compatible with magic. They fixed up my hearing aids when I started school so that they wouldn't go kablooey as soon as I stepped off the wagon. And it seems neat, only you have to have really good grades in Charms and Transfiguration. Plus you have to know how Muggle stuff works too, and even though you can do that on their courses, you still have to... y'know, think you'll get it once someone tries to explain it to you. And I'm not sure I will. I looked at some other stuff too. Like Muggle liaison – helping out kids from Muggle families when they first find out they're magical. The grades for that aren't nearly so high and they might be impressed that I've done Muggle Studies, cos not everyone does that before going into it,” he explained.

He wondered if that was his answer. To accept his limit and the career path that didn't need such good grades. It had definitely felt like a relief when he'd looked into that career, and he didn't hate the idea. But, even if he wanted to do that, which was a possibility, something was still unpleasantly nagging at him...

“But, even if I go with that, I just... I don't want to spend the next two years with it being like hell on earth,” he summed up.

Me too! by Dylan Bailey

Dylan listened dutifully to Michael speak about this plans for the future and while he did, his own struggles as a student back flooding back at him. Dylan had struggled with school, but mainly because he had been lazy. However, there had been a time where he had been so lost he didn’t think he would make it. It was until his sixth year where he realized what he wanted to be when he graduated, and the medic had to work extra hard to improve his grades before he graduated school. Moreover, he had to take a few extra classes once he had to be able to enter med school.

“Michael, there is no need to live hell while at Sonora. If you want to improve your grades in Transfiguration and Charms to achieve the first career path you can always ask for tutoring from your teachers or peers. I know there are a few students that tutor others, not sure if you have to pay them, but I can look into it if you want,” Dylan said with a smile. He really wanted to help his ward. It was why he was here, after all.

“I can even help with some subjects, particularly charms,” he finished. The medic scratched his growing stubble and smiled to himself. Cassie preferred him clean shaven but during his week at Sonora he was a free man! He could do whatever he wanted as long as Cassie didn’t know about it. It was weird being a relationship and compromising so much, but he loved it. There was nothing better to go back home to a loving girl. It was hard, but worth it at the end.

“What do you think?” Dylan’s main concern was that Michael could find his place at school and after he left it. His duties as Head of House made him responsible for his well being, and he was serious about his responsibilities. “We can set up a Charms tutoring schedule for you and you can talk to Professor Skies to see what can be done for Transfiguration.” Dylan gave Michael the most friendly and helpful smile he could muster. He was glad he had come to him for help, and Dylan would provide to the best of his abilities even if they were quite limited.
