A Conversation of Insanity (Tag: Pepper)
by Briony O'Leary
With a heavy sigh, Briony sunk onto her bed with a book, though she doubted how much reading she would actually get done. She was waiting for Pepper to return so that they could talk. It was a conversation that she really wasn’t looking forward to in the slightest, but it needed to be done. She had been doing a lot of thinking since the outburst that had occurred at the end of last year with Pepper declaring her wants for Head Girl and Saul. She really couldn’t do anything about the Head Girl position, other than feel guilty, so she had pushed it from her mind.
The other part of the equation she couldn’t get out of her mind and it was much, much more complicated. She cared a lot about Saul and she didn’t want to give him up. She didn’t want to stop being his girlfriend, but she also worried that she was second choice in comparison to Pepper. Until recently, it had always seemed like she was second choice to her roommate, so it seemed reasonable that since Saul had liked Pepper that he would have chosen her over Briony and that the only explanation was that he didn’t, because he didn’t know Pepper liked him too.
Briony’s feelings, on the other hand, had always been fairly obvious. At least, she thought so. She always felt like her emotions were on display for the world to see. And who wouldn’t choose the person that they were sure not to be rejected by? So, now, out of a tangle of emotions including guilt and jealousy, she had to know if she were first or second choice as well as try to make Pepper no longer upset with her, assuming she still was. She also knew that one way or another feelings were going to get hurt. Most likely hers, but she would rather be that than the second pity.
Hearing the door open, she tensed up. Upon seeing the intended target, she gave a terse greeting before biting her lip and staring at the bed. She could do this. She had to. Otherwise, she would always wonder about her relationship with Saul. Not to mention the awfulness of living with a roommate that hated her for possibly no reason. She clasped her hands together. “So, Pepper, I was thinking and you’ll probably think I’m insane, but I think you should tell Saul how you feel. I mean if you still like him and all.” She was insane.
