Alors, on danse? [Tag: Madeleine] by Sébastien Évreux

Tracking down Madeleine hadn’t proven to be a difficult task. A quick unsuccessful check of the common room, and then Sébastien had had the brainwave to check the library before Cascade Hall. After all, they did have that potions essay to work on, and it wasn’t particularly close to a mealtime. He didn’t want to ask her whilst eating. That had the potential for food-related disaster, at least according to his mother, who had once advised him to never ask a lady a question whilst she is eating, lest she deem it impertinent and forget her manners in favour of smearing foie gras on your face. That thought, whilst seeming a little unlikely (but then again, Isabelle Évreux had her own ways of doing things), had stuck with Bastien ever since.

He had a mission to complete that day, and no intention of failing. Sébastien Évreux was not going to go dateless to the ball (what kind of reputation would that give him?), and Madeleine really was the most suitable option. She was from one of the finest families, and, even more importantly, she was French. That meant quite a lot in Bastien’s eyes.

Taking a seat next to her, he glanced over her work to see what she was doing. “Ça va?” he asked, deciding he didn’t want to go straight into his reasons for tracking her down, before getting bored and changing his mind.

“Madeleine,” started Bastien seriously, turning to look straight at her as he did have something fairly important to ask her. Obviously he took it as a given that she would say yes (there was no one more suitable for her to go with, just as she was the most suitable option for him, and besides who wouldn’t want to say yes to him?) but Sébastien Évreux was not one of the bourgeoisie, and he liked to do things properly. “Veux-tu m'accompagner au bal à la fin de l’année?

Alors on danse. by Madeleine Dautin

Madeleine was kind of annoyed with Sébastien Évreux. She had known from the announcement of the ball that he would be asking her. It was just a given. There were many pureblood witches and wizards at Sonora—all of whom would have made very appropriate dates for the two of them, but they were allies and beyond that they were both the only full-French at the school other than Louis Valois and Madeleine was positive that neither she nor Bastien—no, Sébastien for now because she was annoyed with him, would be attending the ball on the Valois heir’s immaculately dressed arm.

However the days and weeks and months passed until Madeleine was quite sure that Sébastien Évreux, despite his commitment to her as her ally against the dreadful Americans (who really weren’t as dreadful as Madeleine had originally thought) had actually gone and asked someone else to the ball. If he had asked Liliana Bannister she didn’t think she could ever forgive him. Especially after Madeleine had told him all about “that Bannister salope” and what she had done to her precious Myrtille.

She had been trying to deal with his rejection carefully. After all, there had been a time where she didn’t care what he thought of her. And, in all reality, when she really sat down and thought about it, she wasn’t sure she did care what he thought. They were friends of convenience anyway, but they were still friends nonetheless and so it hurt a little bit that Sébastien had decided to ask Madeleine’s seventh year enemy to the ball instead of Madeleine herself.

So, when Sébastien found her in the library doing what she did best when she was stressed out, learn new things, her response was to pay more attention to her book on hand (Failed Transfigurations of the Eighteenth Century). “Oui, ça va, et toi?” she replied, absent-mindedly. She had been waiting long enough for him to ask her to the ball that she thought she was going to have to trick someone else into asking her before him simply so she could rub his nose in his own failure. And besides, why should she give him the time of day when he clearly thought his time of day was best spent with the likes of noblesse who were more like the bourgeoise salopes her father liked to play with than actual members of the noblesse.

“Sébastien,” she mimicked him, putting down her quill and turning to face him with a mock serious expression on her face. Getting on his nerves whenever she could was one of her favourite past times since he couldn’t actually be upset with her. There was too much history and too many things riding on their friendship and besides that, she was pretty sure he wasn’t close to anyone else. It seemed, though, that he had more to say because he accompanying questions (about her accompanying him to the ball, no less) drowned out her rather immature attempt at baiting.

“Why, Sébastien,” she replied in her best American accent. “I thought you’d never ask.” She put a hand on his, as though his words really had charmed her. “Mais la prochaine fois tu peux me demander un peu plus tôt, tu sais? A girl doesn’t like to feel like a last option.” Madeleine was pouting now but she didn’t really care.

OOC:
salope = slut
Oui, ça va, et toi? = Yes, things are well, and you?
Mais la prochaine fois tu peux me demander un peu plus tôt, tu sais = But the next time you could ask me a little sooner, you know?

Merci by Sébastien

Sébastien opened his mouth to protest at Madeleine’s words, but quickly reflected and shut it again without saying anything. Madeleine might have a point. As loath as he was to admit it, the more gentlemanly thing to do would have been to ask her sooner so she could be sure of accompanying the most suitable boy in her year. It would also have been a more practical thing to do. Things had turned out fine, with Madeleine agreeing to go with him, but there had been no guarantee that nobody else would ask Madeleine to attend the ball with them. Bastien wouldn’t have put it past her to say yes in such a situation. He’d come to realise that Madeleine wasn’t always the most predictable, which was Sébastien’s way of saying she didn’t always act exactly as he’d like her to.

The real reason that Sébastien hadn’t asked her sooner was that he didn’t actually know when the appropriate time to ask was. None of his etiquette training had covered school balls! The moment the ball had been announced, he’d known he would be asking Madeleine, but he didn’t want to seem too keen and give her an opportunity to laugh at him. He hadn’t heard rumours of anyone else asking until after midterm, but upon their return he’d initially been annoyed at having been slighted over the break, which had delayed asking even further. Still, he’d thought he had plenty of time before the ball in which to ask her, but apparently he’d got that wrong. Now Bastien was not a happy little Bastien, and was mentally berating himself, but at least she had said yes. It would have been awful to watch her with somebody like Killian Everett, who seemed a bit useless and was a wizard of far inferior origins to Sébastien Évreux.

“Madeleine, je suis désolé.” A charming smile could always make things right, surely? “Tu sais que t’es toujours mon premier choix.”

OOC:
The author finds Killian Everett to be lovely and sweet, and does not share any of Sébastien's feelings towards him.

Glossary :
je suis désolé = I am sorry
Tu sais que t’es toujours mon premier choix = You know you’re always my first choice
