This year midterm had been a giant pain. Alessa still received many gifts and all that but this year there were the dratted parties . She was getting older and that meant instead of getting to stay home alone with the elves and having free run of the house, like the last few years-actually she had free run when her parents were home too, but it was just awesome to have the huge house all to herself-she had to go to a party full of people.
And Alessa had never really liked parties. There were so many people and while she wasn't really shy, she had a tendency to feel uncomfortable at large gatherings. It was all that noise , so many different conversations going all at once. Family gatherings were bad enough but these parties with hundreds of people were much worse. Eventually all the noise seemed to turn into a loud buzzing sound and Alessa just wanted to escape.
Plus, they were boring. She didn't really like to dance-as she wasn't good at it and Alessa really only liked doing what she was good at-and didn't ever know what to talk about. She didn't mind hearing the gossip, especially the latest births, marriages and betrothals, as that sort of fed into Alessa keeping up with her hobby of family geneaologies. Keeping up on what was current in that area was important to her because she liked to be as accurate as possible. Other than that though, Alessa couldn't have cared less about fashion or things like that. She dressed nicely simply because it was required of her.
Not that she was excited to be back at school. Oh, she liked her classes and whatnot and even her classmates. Alessa just felt like none of them would truly understand her. Veronica and Rachel would probably love going to the pureblood parties that Alessa found tiresome and she certainly couldn't relate to the Pecari girls with their love of Quidditch.
However, it was much better to be here than there. Though Alessa had to admit, she did enjoy the meeting guys part. The Aladren girl was starting to notice the opposite gender more and more, though she didn't have an interest in anyone specific. From what she gathered, that was the point of these parties anyway. So Alessa could meet a guy of good standing that she liked so her parents could get talk to his about getting a betrothal for her. She was lucky, she knew, to have some input when most girls like her got none.
Alessa sat down at a table, ready to start her Potions essay and sighed. She liked the practical parts of her classes but essays were a giant pain. Still, she knew she had to do her best, or at least enough to not look stupid.
After working for several moments, Alessa heard footsteps approaching and someone sitting down next to her. She looked up from her work. "Hello," she greeted the other person.
