Pain by Thyme Barrington

Thyme settled herself into a chair in one of the furthest corners of the library. It was a great hiding place and she had discovered it her first year here but unfortunately it had often been occupied by an older guy (whom she actually thought might have been dating one of her roommates) and Thyme had never bothered to fight him for it.

However, that guy had now graduated fortunately and the spot was hers. Thyme probably needed it more than he had anyway. She sincerely doubted he'd had something he needed to hide the way she did. Or a bunch of roommates that he needed to hide from (as there were way more girls than guys at Sonora).

She had of course not gone home for midterm. Going home was worse than being at school. If she felt the urge to cut often at school, she felt it that much more at home. Like every five minutes. Thyme hated the holidays now. Hated the forced cheerfulness and pretending. They were not a happy family. They weren't really a family at all and she refused to take part.

Thyme took out her journal and looked down at the page. It was blank. A lot of the pages were blank. She could barely write anymore and when she did the contents were bleak, dark and disturbing. She put it away. So much of the time, Thyme just felt either numb or hurting. She didn't feel whole.

She felt like she was cut into tiny pieces.

Is best treated with HUGS by Jaeven Dimitri

Jae Dimitri hummed to himself as he skipped down the hallways. They had a Polyjuice Potion Project in Potions and the Pecari had a lot of fun with alliteration. More than that though, the blonde-dreadlocked boy was bent on doing well. Professor Fawcett had allowed him to take Potions even though his marks hadn’t been very good at all, and Jae was going to do his best to not disappoint the professor with the biggest project of the year. So even though Jaeven almost-never went to the library (except the sometimes that he did) he was going to go to the library and do research until his eyeballs fell out and tried to crawl away! And then he would do MORE!

Of course, the problem with not spending very much time in the library was that he wasn’t very good at the library. Jae was soon reminded of this as he got very lost trying to find the books on Potions. They were supposed to be at the end of this row—no, it was this row—wait, no! this one!

Jae got lost. It wasn’t unusual for him to get lost in the library, but he did get lost. And it was while he was getting lost that he found a chair at the back of the library, all by itself, with Thyme in it. Knowing that people usually came to libraries to study, Jae wouldn’t have bothered her except that she didn’t have a book out, so she couldn’t be studying, right? Plus, Thyme looked sad. Thyme usually looked sad though. That made Jae sad. He didn’t think that someone should be sad all the time. Only sometimes, like if your cat died. He had been sad when Jenny died, after all.

And the logical thing for Jae Dimitri to do when people were sad was to hug them! So that was exactly what the green-eyed Pecari did. He skipped over to Thyme and gave her a huuuuuge hug around the shoulders.

“Hi!” he smiled at her. “You look sad. Can I help?”

Hugs are good. by Thyme

As soon as Thyme felt the hug, she knew it was Jae. Nobody else hugged her. In fact, nobody else really tried to even talk to her. She was ignored at home and ignored at school. For the most part, she didn't mind. Being left alone meant not having to try and act normal.Thyme had never been good at pretending to feel something she didn't.

Being left alone meant not getting caught and not having to explain.

She tried to smile. She didn't mind trying to smile with Jae because Thyme didn't really want to drag him down with her. She had no desire to make others feel as miserable as she did, especially someone who'd been truly nice to her. Nobody should have to feel that way but Thyme couldn't help it. Of course, Jae didn't really seem to be able to be truly down and depressed.

Lucky him.

"Oh no, it's fine." Thyme reassured him. She didn't think anyone would ever be able to truly help her. Maybe some psycho who could put her out of her misery.

After all, despite some personality differences that just seemed to balance each other out perfectly, hadn't she and Tea been a matched set? Now they weren't. Thyme was alive and her twin was not.

She looked back at Jae. "So, what are you up to?" Thyme asked, actually interested. If she could listen to whatever Jae wanted to talk about, she wouldn't have to focus on her own issues.

Pretty much the best by Jae

Thyme said it was fine, but she said that a lot and Jae had come to realise that when she said she was fine she was actually saying not to worry about her, but she wasn’t fine. That worried Jae because he didn’t think that people should keep their feelings inside all of the time. Maybe it was because his Aunt Cheri was a therapist and helped people who had problems with their feelings all the time, but Jae didn’t think that was very healthy. But he didn’t want to bother Thyme if she didn’t feel comfortable talking to him about it, so he didn’t push her about it. Instead, the blonde-dreadlocked sixteen-year-old just gave her another squeeze and then sat on the floor by her chair, Indian style.

“Well,” he said, tilting his head at Thyme, “we’re doing this Polyjuice Potion Project in Potions and I think I need to do some research. I don’t want to mess it up for me and my partner, and I didn’t do well on my Potions exam.” Jae wrinkled his nose. “I think I got a D, for Dreadful. I’m not very good at exams and stuff.”

Aunt Cheri and Aunt Marla had helped him to do well in school despite his dyslexia. Jae was a very good aural and kinetic learner; he just couldn’t read things and understand them, and he had a hard time putting them into writing properly too. So they had found a bookshop that sold talking books, and bought his textbooks from there. Most of magical school was about touching and doing, so Jae didn’t have too many problems there, except in History of Magic. Potions was a little iffy too, but he did well with Comec, even though Professor K. had gone away and had a baby. Jae thought the baby was probably very cute, and wished she had come back to show them.

Jae wondered how to cheer Thyme up. It made him sad to see her sad, but she seemed sad so often he wasn’t sure what to do. She was pretty and kind and Jae really liked her—he just didn’t know if he should tell her that. She probably had lots of boys who liked her, and they were probably all smarter than he was. But she had smiled at him.

“D’you...” the Pecari’s pale skin had turned a little bit pink now. He hadn’t ever asked a girl to do anything like this before. “Are you going to go to the Ball? Because, uhm, if you are and uhm, if you don’t have someone to go with,” his cheeks were very red now, Jae felt the heat emanating from them. “I mean, if you’d like...would you go to the Ball with me?”

But things just got better by Thyme

Thyme listened as Jae talked about the Polyjuice Potion. She knew it took great skill to brew it and she wasn't even taking the class, just COMC and Charms, but Thyme sort of wished she could take the potion. She wished she could be someone else, though she had no idea who she wanted to be.

On second thought, she kind of did. Thyme wished she could be who she used to be. Who she was before her sister had died. Sure, she'd been shy and hated new experiences and things had never been perfect, like back at RMI when she'd felt like Britta was trying to take Tea away from her. (In fact, this had inspired Thyme to write a story once about a girl whose twin had made friends with a total psycho and the psycho had tried to steal the girl's identity using polyjuice potion. It wasn't as easy now to write stories to write stories reflecting her problems. She'd never written about Tea's death.)

But then Thyme had had her sister and parents who paid attention to her rather than being locked in their own little worlds just like she was. She'd had decent grades and the motivation to write and arms that weren't covered in scars.

"I'm sorry about your test." She told Jae. Hers never seemed to be much better.

What Jae said next surprised Thyme. She hadn't thought about the ball much at all and had, in fact, rather forgotten about it, been oblivious. It never had occurred to her that anyone would ask her. There were so many girls at Sonora who were pretty and lively and fun, not like what Thyme had become.

For the first time in years, something like a genuine smile came to her face, even as Thyme was blushing. "I-I'd love to." Honestly, talking to Jae and being friends with him was the only thing aside from cutting that made her feel anything other than deep depression. Not that she was going to say that, as it would involve admitting she did that. Plus, sometimes Thyme worried Jae would go away too. She felt like she lost everyone she cared about all the time. Not only her sister but she'd lost her parents in a way too. Plus her friend Kitty back at RMI, who Thyme had had to leave when she transferred, so now she feared losing anyone she got close to.
