Walking into the Library Tobar carried his bag and sighed. Already a week back from midterm break and loaded down with homework in preparation for exams. Before he had come back to Sonora the caravan had moved from Florida to South Dakota to see snow. The family had really enjoyed sledding together and having a huge snowball fight where even the adults had forgone their chores and joined in. But now the carefree days were done for at least now and Tobar was trying to be responsible, for once.
He sat down in the library and pulled out his Defense essay and stared at it. A whole roll of parchment on a Knockback jinx was Professor Levy insane? All it did was knock people backward he could do that with a push. Who ever created it was silly. He rocked back on his chair and stuck his sugar quill in his mouth. He was never going to finish this essay but it was worth a try. He would be going to bed early tonight as tomorrow was Quidditch day and his first game as Keeper. His family had been excited for him and wished they could see but he had proudly showed his siblings his Keeper robes, which were already waiting neatly folded on his trunk.
He jumped when he heard the chair across from him scrape against the wooden floor. He winced and looked up at the person. “That’s not a very pleasant noise.” He mumbled as he looked up at the person and smiled.
Break had been nothing special for Alessa. She had gotten more clothing than she would have liked for gifts. While she felt she was outgrowing toys, she wasn't that into clothing. Alessa would rather have books, both fiction and non-fiction.
Going to Grandfather and Grandmother Hinckley's seemed less fun this year too. None of her cousins were anywhere near her age and she didn't have much to say to people. Not that Alessa had much to say to most of the people at school either.
The best part of midterm had been when her parents had gone to a party and left her home alone for the first time. Alessa had loved having the house to herself (aside from the house-elves.)Not that she'd done anything that unusual, it was just nice to have breathing room. Her parents spent an awfully lot of time asking about her classmates and hadn't seemed all that impressed by Alessa's responses.
Really, it wasn't like it was her fault that her year wasn't exactly swarming with the kind of purebloods her parents wanted her to cultivate friendships with.
To make matters worse, Alessa had come back to school to find there was no more History of Magic. That had been disappointing to her. Why couldn't they hire someone else? Why couldn't they get rid of COMC instead if something had to go? Why couldn't her family donate more money if it was a budgetary issue?
Alessa sighed and walked over to a table. She opened up her Charms book in order to work on her essay.
“That’s not a very pleasant noise.”
She looked up, surprised. Somehow, Alessa had missed the fact that someone else was sitting there. "Sorry about that," she replied
Tobar smiled at the girl who sat across from him. He swept his black hair back and in his accented English he said. “I forgive you.” He said. He narrowed his eyes looking over the girl; she looked familiar so she was probably in his classes he just hadn’t been introduced yet. He didn’t go out of his way to meet everyone, and be friend them. He didn’t want to make many attachments at school, the caravan was what he had to be loyal to, as he would be the leader of his caravan one day.
“I am Tobar Brishen.” He said with a nod, he might as well be pleasant to the girl sitting across from him. He looked over at the book she had opened and sighed. “I was hoping you would be working on the Defense essay.” He said and shook his head. “Professor Levy is killing me with this essay.” He smiled at her and then rocked back on his chair. He put his sugar quill back in his mouth a mischievous look playing in his eyes as he watched the girl.
Alessa was at a loss for words when the boy said he forgave her. She was glad, of course, that he had accepted her apology but she wasn't exactly sure what to follow that up with. He was smiling though, which meant he probably wasn't mad. That was good but it was going to be super awkward if she couldn't think of something to say.
Fortunately, he introduced himself then."Pleased to meet you, Tobar," Alessa replied. She knew who he was, of course, since their class wasn't very big. It hadn't been hard for her to quickly learn the names of all her classmates. Still, this was the first time she'd spoken to him. "I'm Alessa Hinckley."
She decided not to add her family branch as Tobar hadn't said his, and Alessa was pretty sure he wasn't a pureblood anyway. Besides, it didn't seem like a lot of people her age did that. They seemed so casual and informal. She wasn't used to that. Not that she always minded since she didn't have to try and remember all the rules of ettiquette, but it was kind of confusing.
"That's too bad." Alessa replied, again not entirely sure what to say. "I tend to have some trouble with that class too." She didn't have too much trouble with getting the spells down or her homework (though she did have a tendency to get off on tangents when she did essays) but there was just seemed to be an athletic component to the class that was difficult for her. "I'm better at the other classes. Except COMC." That was mostly because it was just not interesting to her.
