Outside in the gardens, the fair was going on. Inside, in the library, Adam was skipping it. He had no reason to go. The last thing he wanted was to hang out by himself . Well, he was by himself in the library but there weren't any other people there. It always emphasized how painfully alone Adam was when other people were around. He always thought they were whispering about him and making fun of him and he figured he wouldn't be wanted at the fair anyway.
As for the people that did want him, well, Adam figured Briony and Pepper would be monopolized by Saul as usual. He couldn't hang out with Kaylie since that was the reason people made fun of him in the first place-the fact that his first few years, he'd tried to cling to his sister.
Then there was Talitha...Adam blushed just thinking of her. There was nothing he would have liked better than to be with Talitha. He hadn't really gotten much chance to talk to her lately either, what with studying for his CATS and all. It worried him a great deal. What if she was getting closer to Oliver and more interested in him? What if they were dating now and Adam just hadn't been paying attention? He'd be completely crushed. Destroyed, really. Just like Kaylie had been. Adam was terrified of that happening to him. If it had done that to his sister, who had been a pretty happy person, what would happen to him if he got hurt that way? Adam doubted he'd even survive it.
It didn't stop him from wishing Talitha was his girlfriend though.
He'd had other things on his mind too. On Adam's sixteenth birthday, he'd received a letter from his great grandfather. It wasn't just the usual happy-birthday-here's-some-money letter that Adam usually got from him. Instead it was the letter. The one that asked-or rather, ordered-him to spend the summer at his great-grandparents' mansion learning how to become the family patriarch. His father had gone through something similar at his age and often still had to learn more about it. It was something Adam was going to deal with for the rest of his life. The worst part was going to fancy parties and having to socialize with members of other important families. The whole thing made him want to throw up a little.
Adam settled back in a chair in his favorite with a book when he heard a creak. He looked up, wondering who else would be skipping the fair. He hoped it would be Talitha coming to find him. If she wanted to hang out at the fair, Adam would be willing to go out there with her.
