Zack Dill

Zack sat at his usual table in the library, but instead of books about potions or physics, or even his Prefect Station sign, what he had laid out on the surface was a number of different sheets of paper. Four of them were labeled in large letters: Board Games, Video Games, Arcade Games, Other Games. Each of those had a list of games that he'd been able to think of, but they also had plenty of room to add more.

Another was a piece of graph paper, and this appeared to be a diagram of their booth. A block of space on the booth table was labeled [Informational - explanation poster, comparisons to magic games, game descriptions], and next to that was an equally sized block called [Example Games - mostly board, some manuals for video games, D&D player handbook], and a larger area off to the side was depicted as being dedicated to [Mario Kart]. On the opposite side, mirroring the Mario Kart area, he had drawn in another box, though this one lacked a label of any kind.

Also covering the table were quills, ink, and muggle pencils, highlighters, and markers. He also had a slew of dice; small six sided ones had a fair majority but there were also D20s, D12s, D10s, D8s, D4s, and even a D3. (Zack was of the belief no discussion of games should be done without dice present - plus, they could serve as decision making devices in a pinch.) Beside his chair, he had some large blank sheets of poster paper as well as a stack of blank copy paper.

He had pretty much everything he could need for a planning and preparation session for his games booth, except his two co-conspirators.

They should be arriving shortly.

After being pecked by a school owl that didn't think she removed the letter from its leg fast enough, ("You couldn't wait for me to finish the sentence?" she frowned, blowing on her nicked finger that once supported a quill for her letter to Dino.) she read Zack's note about the fair meeting and smiled. Of course she was still interested. The fair was one of the few things pulling her through each day on this side of the RATS exams. She was glad she could help run one of the booths.

So when seven-fifteen the following evening rolled around, Mia was freshened up after a long day of classes, changed into more comfortable sweatpants, a t-shirt, flip-flops and a cloth headband to keep her hair out of her face, and left the Pecari common room for the library. She waved to the Pecari suit of armor on her way out and it raised a gauntlet to salute her. It had to be weird to say she was friends with a magical suit of armor, but she enjoyed its company. It could be very interactive in a conversation without saying a single word.

Mia entered the library with a few minutes to spare and began her search for Zack. As if walking into a muted room, the clapping of sandal to heel seemed to double in volume so she walked slower to control it. She expected to find Zack in his usual spot; there was a table he designated for himself so immediately she looked for the sign before even looking for him. She saw the spot where the table was. It looked out of place somehow and a moment later she knew why. The sign had been moved, but Zack was where she expected him to be so she joined him, sitting in the seat across from his.

"'Evening," she greeted and from her seat she had a better view of the papers she had seen covering the tabletop along with many other things. Lists and diagrams. That wasn't at all unusual. "Well, someone's done his homework." She might have added a playful "duh," but she was sure it was implied by her cheeky grin. She took a quill as a pointer and indicated to the graph paper where it said Mario Kart while rolling a twelve-sided die in her other hand. "Does that mean we got the go ahead?"

Zack smiled and nodded in greeting as the first of his co-conspirators arrived at the table. "Hey, Mia. Delany should be coming, I hope." At least, he hadn't gotten a letter back saying she wouldn't be attending and the cool thing about owl post was you were pretty much guaranteed that the intended recipient at least got their letter. And he had yet to see anyone not open their post the moment it arrived. It was sort of like a ringing telephone, except you couldn't ignore it or you'd risk getting pecked.

Mia took the seat across from him and looked over his drawings and lists and asked the question that made the most sense given their last conversation. He wavered a hand in front of him in the universal so-so gesture and explained, "More or less. We will definitely have something that strongly resembles Mario Kart, at least, though the details of getting it to work are still being hashed out. But essentially, yes, we've got Mario Kart."

He turned the diagram of their booth set up towards Mia and pointed at the empty spot opposite Mario Kart's area. "I was thinking of putting skee ball here, but thought I'd see if you had any other ideas since we talked, or if maybe Delany had something she wanted to include."

Tapping the finger on both the empty spot and the Mario Kart area, then shifting it to the table, he continued, "I figure we'll take tickets for playing skeeball and Mario Kart, but have the stuff on the table available for anyone to browse and ask questions about without using tickets. And as a prize for winning a race in Mario Kart, or getting a ball in the middle hole of the skeeball thing, the prize would be getting to try the other one for free. What do you think?"

Mia hoped Delany showed up. Three people were needed to run a booth and Delany was their third. Well, technically Mia was the third, but if Delany changed her mind it would still leave them with two people. She wasn't entirely worried though because surely a booth with two people could run as smoothly as one with three. Closer eyes would be needed to watch the same number of booth games, but it was definitely plausible. Still, the more merrier.

Mia cocked her head to the side wondering what "more or less" meant in regards to Mario Kart. In the end it didn't matter though because "essentially yes" still sounded like a yes to her. That was what she had hoped to hear. "Awesome," she voiced and then looked more closely at the rest of the papers once the main objective in her mind had been taken care of.

She continued to roll the twelve-sided die between her thumb and each finger in sequence as Zack explained what else he had planned. Awesome as it was, there were other topics of discussion apart from Mario Kart. She was silent for a few moments thinking about Zack's options.

"Skeeball definitely," she finally spoke. "And if the half hashed details work out we can add some other games. Even some simpler games to set up since not every muggle game is electronic, like," she paused in rapid thought. "Knock Hockey or something. And for prizes, I like the free game for winning a Mario Kart race, but I think the students should have something they can keep for the other games. Could be something small and simple, but something they can take with them."

Zack nodded, secretly pleased that Mia still liked the skeeball idea. He'd been putting some thought into how to acquire one and was kind of excited about this book (101 Obscure Muggle Contraptions) he'd found that described how to actually make one using common household items and some pretty complex transfiguration spells.

He picked up a pencil and wrote into the black area, Skeeball and other demo games. Putting down the writing implement he bit his lip and tried to think of something pretty cheap that they could give out as prizes. His eye fell on the D12 Mia was toying with.

"What about dice?" He suggested, the idea popping into his head abruptly and his tongue speaking it before he had a chance to really consider it. He shrugged, a little self consciously, and tried to explain, "I mean, yeah, they're not terribly interesting by themselves, but they're a pretty good representative of games in general and if you get five you can play Yahtzee. Plus, if we have a lot left over, I can use them in my RPGs. I can probably get some gold colored ones so it's more prize-like."\r\n\r\n
