The sound of the quill scratching against parchment could be heard as Devian worked on an essay for Potions. While he always sot perfection in his assignments, merely to be better than Chris, this one was even more important for him, because it was his favorite class. There was something about the intricacies and subtleties involved that appealed to his creative senses. It was an art mixed with logic and in his opinion nothing achieved the same level of satisfaction then the accomplished goal of the complete potion in all its glory.
As he finished the essay, a smug expression played on his features until a shadow fell across his path. Glancing up revealed the shadow to accompany his sister, Danae. The self-satisfaction left his face and turned to one of cold calculation. His sister never approached him. She knew better. His voice full of ice, he asked, “What do you want?”
Danae shifted nervously under his gaze. He was getting to be more like their father with each passing day. Any possible compassion being slowly stripped from him until all that was left was a cold, hard shell. She took a deep breath, reminding herself of why she was here. This was for her new friend. She began stammering slightly before getting it all out in a rush, “M-my friend has a bag with a butterfly on it and I wanted to know if you would be willing to charm it.”
“Why should I?” He asked, leaning back slightly, pulling up his leg and resting his wrist off of his knee. The literal translation for his question was really what was in it for him. Usually, it involved her allowance or some other favor, such as taking the blame for something he did. She knew why he asked for the latter since their father was always harder on him than anyone else, but she didn't know why he couldn't just stop scheming and then there would be no punishment.
Danae bit back a sigh. She knew if she did, he would only use it against her. Every move made was like being in a battle. Why couldn't he just be a nice, older brother for once helping his little sister. He would help Lucie in an instant, but she knew, even in her jealousy, she would do the same. So, what would be her sacrifice? “I'll give you a month's allowance to perform the charm and to be nice to her.”
Devian chewed on the inside of his cheek while he weighed his options. Her demeanor and tone declared how much it meant to her. He gave a smirk. “Two months and I need a...favor.”
She shifted from foot to foot in nervousness. She glanced around the library. Eavan should be arriving soon since they had agreed to meet here and she didn't want her to hear this conversation. It was too shameful. Two months allowance she could deal with, but she wasn't sure that she wanted to know what the favor was. She tucked some chestnut hair behind her ear, before cautiously asking, “What's the favor?” She knew better than to ever trust Devian.
He gave a wicked grin. “Do you know Lexi Stafford?” She nodded. She was a beater on the Teppenpaw team. Everyone on the teams were fairly well known. “I want you to gather information on her. Spy on her. I want to know what she seems to be interested in and I want to know anytime she meets Chris.”
Danae's eyes narrowed in suspicion, but didn't question it. What would he want with Lexi? She knew that he had a personal vendetta against Chris, because of their father's issues with his brother, Chris' father, all over who was Head of Family. Tentatively, she said, “Yeah, fine.” Maybe she should tell Lexi what Devian was up to? But would the other girl believe her? No one else ever did. Hearing footsteps approaching, she quickly asked in a hushed tone, “Can we drop it now? And don't forget to be nice to Eavan.” When Eavan arrived, she made the introductions, “Eavan, this is my brother, Devian. Devian, this is my friend, Eavan.” Then, turning to Eavan, she said, “He said he would perform the charm.”
Devian gaze traveled over the younger student. She was rather pretty and he decided to have a little fun. He offered her a half-grin, “Anything for a friend, especially one with such nice eyes.”
“Devian,” Danae warned. Attempting to flirt with her friend was out of the question.
He rolled his eyes before continuing on a more serious note, “We'll need to find a book with the charm.”

Her footsteps echoed in the library when Eavan entered it. It was quiet. Did she misunderstand Danae? She was supposed to meet her and her brother here. At least she thought she was. Eavan stepped farther into the library, trying to make out a familiar voice, or any voice for that matter.
It was then that she noticed Danae and a boy she assumed to be her brother, at a table, talking in hushed voices. Hoisting her bag on her shoulder a little more, she strode forward with a smile on her face. Danae made introductions and said that Devian was going to help her. With that, Eavan's grin grew bigger.
"Great!" But the grin didn't last long. At Devian's compliment, it faultered and Eavan's cheeks went red and her eyes went wide. It wasn't every day that she got a compliment from a boy.
When Devian got down to business, Eavan followed suit, but kept on shifting her gaze to his face. Did she really have nice eyes? Eavan willed the though away.
"Should we look in the section on general charms or is there a specific thing we should be looking for?" she directed at Devian
The blush didn’t fail to go unnoticed by either sibling. Devian felt a sense of pride for having made the red tinge appear. Danae, on the other hand, was just hoping Eavan didn’t fall for anything her brother said. It was a dangerous road to go down.
Devian thought for a moment. What type of charm would they be looking for? He gazed at the bag. “Probably some sort of animation charm…” His voice drifted off and he was up and out of his seat and disappearing into the stacks. After several minutes, he returned with a couple of books in hand. Sitting down, he explained, “The charm that’s used for chocolate frogs should work on your butterfly. Maybe with a little modification.”
Flipping through the first book, it only talked about the history of the chocolate frog without giving detail on how to make it work. Well, that was completely useless. The second book, however, had just what he was looking for. “Aha! Here it is.” Pulling his wand out, he pointed it at the butterfly. He didn’t bother to ask if there was anything important in the bag, figuring it could always be fixed later, before saying the spell. He waited, but the butterfly didn’t move.
He gave a groan of disappointment. He hated when things didn’t work exactly how he intended. He checked the wand movement in the book again. Oh! He had gone left when he should have gone right. He tried the spell again, presumably with the correct movement. Again, nothing happened, but then, wait, very gingerly one wing began to move and then the other. He gave a grin to Eavan. “Piece of cake.”
Before Devian could say anything more, Danae stepped in, “Thanks, Devian. Eavan, we should probably get going.” She hoped her new friend would follow suit before Devian could take any more interest in her.

Eavan sat down while Devian went to go look through the books. She turned to Danae with a smile. "Thanks for asking Devian for me." When Devian returned with an armful of books, Eavan turned her attention him. That was, after all, why she was here.
"Chocolate frogs?" Eavan asked, realizing she never would have thought about them. This was probably why she didn't end up in Aladren. It took a few times for Devian to get it, but when he did, Eavan let out squeal of excitement.
'You did it! Thank you so much, Devian." She went to hug him, but was stopped short by Danae.
"Going? Oh yeah, okay. Well, it was nice meeting you, Devian. And thanks again." She smiled at him and, grabbed her bag before following Danae out of the library. She couldn't help but tell how quickly Danae wanted to leave. Did she not like her brother? She kept silent, but the thought lingered.
