Jenna was suprised at herself, for in all of her year at Sonora, she had never gone to the library. She was a bit of a bookworm after all- so why hadn't she'd been here? Of course, the answer was simple enough, she had been too consumed with a new book, and her tattered, old, gigantic, potion's magazine. But now, now she was out of things to read, and hungry for more books on potions. She especially liked reading about the old alchemists. And that was why she was here now, to look up Paracelcus, a famous yet secretive alchemist genius.
"Paracelcus, where'd you go?" she sighed as she walked down yet another row of bookcases. She wasn't quite sure where everything was yet, but she was sure that she was in the righ section.
And then she found it. An old, dusty, gray book, with blue font on the binding that read "Paracelcus". She was so glad to have found it! But... unfortunately, it was on the top shelf. How typical, she finally finds the book, and she can't get to it.
"Hello? Anybody have a spare stepping stool or ladder, or something on them?" She figured that probably no one had a stepping stool or a ladder, but it was worth a shot.\n\n
Mia strolled the now familiar halls of Sonora with her bag at her side. She bought a new bag for school and all of her friends at home autographed it. It had one long strap that went around her neck and down her body diagonally. The actual bag part sat a bit below her hip. It was a black bag so all of her friends signed in bright colors like bright blue and white and colors like that.
Mia's eyes weren't watching the hall in front of her rather they were trained on a letter she had just recieved from home. This letter was more upbeat than her previous one had been. That made Mia happy and yet at the same time it worried her. Either the letter was truthfully a happy one or it was covering up any problems that Mia just knew there were at home. She decided not to think of the latter and just enjoy the up beat mood of the letter.
Mia's stroll led her to the library. She hadn't been there in a while but she had been there before. She remembered the antics at the beginning of the previous year and smiled a bit as she entered. She also smirked at the sign that said pets weren't allowed.
'Yeah right. Like Silk will really care what a sign says." Mia thought with a laugh.
She wasn't exactly in the mood to read a book but the Library tended to be more quiet and secluded than the rest of the school. She folded her letter and put it snugly in her bag. Mia walked up and down the aisles, not looking for anything in particular. She liked to read some of the odd titles that stuck out like Prized Pranks to Perform and Perplex. She made a mental note to show that one to Tori.
As she roamed, she came across Jenna Howard, her friend who assisted Mia in cratering the DADA room wall. Jenna had asked for a stepping stool or a ladder or something. Mia wasn't sure where she'd get one of those but had a different idea.
"Uh, Jenna? I think someone would more likely be able to lend you a-" Mia paused a second, pretending to think "-chair perhaps, rather than a ladder." she suggested with a small laugh.
'What are you trying to get, anyway?" Mia added curiously as an after thought.
Then again, someone could probably just magic a ladder for Jenna but Mia wasn't the girl to do that. She knew a fair bit of magic but not that much.\n\n
"Oh, hey Mia," Jenna turned around and greeted her. She had not seen her since before the summer. She remembered quite vividly the defense against the dark arts lesson in which they had destroyed and then repaired a wall. Good times.
Jenna wondered why she hadn't thought of a chair before. Probably because she usually didn't climb on chairs, noting her clumsiness. Her parents of course, wouldn't like it either. Hmm, maybe she should have tried it before. Anything for a little rebellion.
"A chair," remarked Jenna, "good idea." Her eye caught a chair nearby, and as she walked over to it, she began to explain, "I was looking for a book on Paracelcus, this amazing alchemist. Unfortunately, he was really secretive about everything, so a book about him is rare. And of course it just has to be somewhere I can'reach," she added the last sentence sarcastically.
Picking up the chair, she realized that she was a bit more obsessive about anything and everything that had to do with potions than most people. Mia probably didn't care about a person who lived a thousand years ago. Even with all his accomplishments. She dragged the chair back by the book silently, and then climbed up.
"Sorry if I'm boring you," she added, "I know potions and stuff really bore a lot of people. Just tell me if you want me to be quiet, sometimes I keep rambling and rambling about things and don't know when to stop."
Mia just shook her head and laughed a little as Jenna spoke about boring her and rambling. Mia couldn't complain or she'd be a hypocrite. She herself tended to ramble on at times.
"Nah, it's alright." Mia said as she watched Jenna on the chair. "I do that too sometimes. The rest of the time, I'm not sure what to say at all. I'm not the best conversationalist. It's sort of a lose-lose kind of thing." Mia shrugged with a small smile.
She moved a bit closer to the chair to spot Jenna in case she slipped. Mia was forcefully reminded of one of the activities in gym class where the students had to spot for the others who were on the balance beam. Mia didn't like gym so much but she wasn't bad at it. Even with such a small and seemingly fragile frame, Mia could be considered athletic. She liked playing sports sometimes.
"You seem to be really into this alchemist guy and potions. I'd say I felt the same but for one thing, I'd be lying. Secondly, I don't know who he is at all. Hopefully you'll pardon my ignorance." Mia gave an apologetic smile. "I've been looking for some books with lots of spells though. I've found myself almost magnetically drawn to using my wand. I'm also pretty good at spell work, I think."
Mia let her fingers brush over the bindings of the books on the surrounding shelves. Her hazel eyes skimmed over them with an almost glossy look. She really loved magic and it bothered her that she couldn't do it at home. Her other hand went to the clip that held her hair up so it only just brushed her neck. She twirled a lock of her wavy dark hair as she continued her gazing.
"I mean, I think I get the hang of it pretty quickly so I've been learning some spells on my own through out last year. I suppose now is as good a time as any to get another spell book. I returned the other one on like, the last day last year after learning a good handfull of the spells it had to offer. The rest were too complicated for me but a lot of them were really easy and-"
Mia quickly stopped talking. She had just proven the point she made earlier. She either doesn't know what to say or says too much. She mentally slapped herself for rambling and looked up at Jenna.
"Sorry. I guess we're in the same boat with this rambling business, huh?"\n\n
no kudos to whoever made chain reactions, though

Jenna smiled and joked, "Must be something in the water that makes us all talk too much. Honestly, I really don't know to much about Paracelcus, other than what I said before- he's a genius in alchemy. But I'm really nothing with my wand, so I guess that's why I like potions and stuff having to do with it."
Jenna pulled out the book from the case as carefully as she could. Unfortunately, that was not careful enough. A tall, dusty red book started to shake as she pulled out the book on Paracelcus. She attempted to hold the book on Paracelcus with one hand, and steady the red book with the other. But the weight of the book on Paracelcus was more than she had anticipated, and she dropped it. With a thud, it fell on her foot. She winced in pain, which caused the chair to shake. So she held onto the ledge of the bookcase with both hands to keep herself steady. And this led to the red book, still not steady, to start its fall to the ground. And Mia was right behind her.
"Watch out!" she yelled, hoping Mia was more agil than she and could get out of the way.\n\n

Mia smiled as Jenna joked and nodded as she made her point.
"That would make sense wouldn't it? I don't think I'm especially great at potions and it's not one of my favorite classes. Even if my head of house is the teacher." Mia shrugged and continued to watch as Jenna struggled with retrieving the book.
It was actually a funny sight but Mia did her best not to laugh. She was a strong believer in karma, what goes around comes around and didn't need something like that coming back around to her. Apparently just thinking about was bad enough though, because the next thing Mia knew, she had a red book headed straight for her.
She didn't need the warning. She did a quick side step and pulled her arms close to her as the book hit the ground with a thud just a few inches from her. A cloud of dust rose from the book. Mia let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and crouched to pick up the book that, waving her hand to blow away the dust. She straightened herself out and looked at the red book.
"Wow, karma sure strikes fast." Mia said aloud but to herself and then looked back at Jenna "Are you alright? she asked as she held the book out for Jenna to take "Think you can get this one back up there with out another chain reaction?" Mia joked with a friendly grin.
Mia had been told by many people that she could be very sarcastic at times when she joked. She didn't do it on purpose to be mean or anything. She was never purposely mean to someone who didn't deserve it. Jenna definitely didn't deserve it.\n\n

one of the few cases where books are lethal
by Jenna H
"Sorry about that!" Jenna smiled weakly at Mia. She was just glad that the book hadn't hit her. Obviously it was heavy, and imagine if that dust cloud had been in her face- Jenna thought that that would be quite uncomfortable. Keeping herself steady, she took the book from Mia and placed it safely on the bookcase. This time, it stayed there. With a sigh of relief, she got off the chair, and picked up the book on Paracelcus from the floor.
Jenna clutched the book in front of her chest. She felt like she should probably say something, but Jenna wasn't the greatest when it came to socializing.
"So," she started slowly, "What brang you here to this part of the library, anyway? I know it wasn't just to have a ranting-filled conversation."\n\n

OOC: I'm no wiz or anything but did you mean 'brought' rather than 'brang'? Sorry, I live with my dad's constant corrections and it gets passed on to me. ^_~
BIC: Mia just shook her head and smiled when Jenna apologized. She was still thinking that karma was the one that sent the book rather than Jenna. There was a bit of silence before Jenna spoke again.
"So, what brang you here to this part of the library, anyway? I know it wasn't just to have a ranting-filled conversation."
"I was just wondering the halls and sort of ended up here. I'm not really looking for anything in particular. It's just usually quieter in the Library than the rest of the school, y'know?" Mia stated before having a thought hit her quite suddenly
"Oh, did you want to be alone while you read about Para- uh guy? I mean, I'll go if you want me to. I was just roaming anyway." Mia said with a relaxed smile, hoping she wasn't invading but showing that if she was than she wouldn't be upset to give her friend privacy.
She knew for a fact that when she wanted to be alone for what ever reason, it really peeved her off when people showed up. Mia clutched the strap of her black bag just to have something to do with her hands while she waited for Jenna's answer. She had a feeling that even if she was cutting in to her friend's alone time, she might not say anything just to be polite. That's what Mia ended up doing.\n\n
OOC: ::authoress bangs head on wall:: argh, grammar has never been one of my strong points, sorry about that!
BIC: "No, you can stay," said Jenna, "I can always read it later. We have a whole school year left for me to read it." She blew on the book, trying to get some of the dust off of it. She was a bit suprised that the book was in this kind of condition. But then, in a library with so many books, there was probably not enough time to keep them all in good order. Especially the less popular books, such as this one.
Spontaneously (which was very rare for Jenna), she put the book on her head. With her arms slightly away from the sides of her body, she balanced the book on her head. Carefully, she took a few steps, managing to keep the book balanced on her head. 'Mother would be so proud,' she thought sarcastically. Taking the book off her head, she grinned at Mia, "This proves it, I am not a complete klutz, gravity does not completely hate me!"\n\n
Mia was glad to hear she could stay. She didn't want to roam the school alone anymore and she didn't quite know where other people were that she wanted to talk to. Being alone to read a letter is one thing but once she was done with the letter, she wanted some company. Even if she couldn't hold a decent conversation. It usually was nice just to have someone there in case a topic of conversation did come up. That was Mia's way of thinking.
Mia clapped jokingly as Jenna balanced the book on her head. She wasn't new to doing that. That was one way to waste some time on a rainy day or whenever. Mia's brother, Isaiah, had said that it didn't mean you had good balance. It meant that your head was flat. Mia just kicked him in the shin for his not unusual stupid comment.
Jenna's statement made Mia laugh. It reminded her of one of her friends from Jersey. Her friend was a complete and utter klutz and proved it constantly every day.
"That's something one of my friends wishes she could say but she seems to have a very close relationship with gravity and the ground." Mia laughed. "You have great balance with one book but what about two?" she challanged with a grin.
She stepped over to the shelves of books and took a random one. It wasn't such a big book but it did attract her eye. It was a navy blue book with golden lettering in a sleek cursive print that reminded Mia of her own hand writing. Mia took the book and held it out to Jenna. Yeah, maybe balancing books on your head was a tad immature but she had a whole school year left to mature a bit as Jenna put it. She hoped Jenna felt the same because Mia was enjoying herself.\n\n
This kind of reminded Jenna of being back home with the governess. She made Jordanna and her balance books on their heads all the time- and it was very annoying. Why balance books on your head if you could just read them? However, Jenna felt like showing off her book-balancing skills now. Half because there was nothing better to do, half because she wanted to see if she could still do it.
"Okay," she said, taking the book and putting it on her head. Really, there wasn't much difference between one book and two, if you knew how to balance the weight, you knew how to balance the weight. Still, Jenna was extra cautious with this one. She never liked to lose a challenge.
Slowly, she took one small step foward, then another. The pressure of the two books began to make her head sore. But she wouldn't take them off, because that would be like losing. She smiled nervously, taking one more step, and then another.
"How about a third?" she prompted. She was mentally berating herself- why did she ask that for? 'Because you are idiotic and love victory too much,' she answered herself mentally. 'Get over it,' she answered herself. Great, now she was having conversations with herself again. Maybe she should add another book, it would give her something else to concentrate on.\n\n
