She hadn’t really meant to find him. When she left Gia, she had just started walking, hoping that maybe, a nice walk around the school would bring her some understanding of what her day had been. As if Barnaby wasn’t hard enough to figure out in his own right, her decision to go with him and investigate--the right choice, looking out for friends, right?--had only brought out a strange, confusing side of Gia. A side that lied to her face. A side that had apparently been present all along, leaving her out of things and keeping secrets.
It was Jax’s secret, whatever it was. Still, she hadn’t meant to find him; she wanted to at least take the night to think things through. That seemed like the smartest course of action, and even Sammy could see that. But as fate would have it, she found him anyway. He was in the Gardens, sitting on a bench evidently to catch his breath. She knew Jax ran in the Gardens sometimes. Maybe she should have known he’d be here.
Seeing him, she couldn’t hold back the urge to go to him. So she did, seating herself beside him on the bench. For a moment, she didn’t speak. She only looked forward.
“What could you possibly tell Barnaby Pye that you couldn’t tell me?” she asked the air in front of them. Her voice shook, brittled but not allowed to falter, in an explicitly weakened way that was very much Not Sammy. When she finally turned to look at him, her eyes were brimmed with tears. “He said he knows something about you and wouldn’t tell me unless I went to the ball with him. So I agreed because I was concerned and wanted to size him up. Gia exploded when I told her, but she only made me think more that you’re all keeping something. So why him?” A fat tear fell down her cheek. She swiped it away. “Why not me?”
Jax needed to run. He had energy to burn and sometimes boxing just wouldn't cut it. So he ran. Now he had it out of him and he was just catching his breath when Sammy joined him on the bench. He was leaning over his knees when she sat, so he glanced up at her from his position expecting her to be her usual loud chatty self but she only sat there. “What are you talking about?” he stated, clearly confused when she asked him what he had told Barnaby. However, before he had time to work it out, Sammy let it all out. Any relaxation that Jax might have felt went right out the door.
“He did what?” Jax demanded, his anger getting the better of him. “That little ...” Jax vehemently swore and cursed Barnaby’s name with every dirty name he could think of. Most of it was spoken in Greek, but there were a few English words that escaped that Sammy would be able to get the gist of his words. He knew his roommate would eventually do something to out Jax. After a moment Jax’s head cleared and he realized that Sammy was crying. He stood up and paced for a moment trying to think of what to do or say.
“Look, I didn't tell Barnaby anything and neither did Gia. Barnaby just figured me out.” Jax stated. “There are things about me that I can't tell people. If you knew, you wouldn't want to be around me. And people can't know because then Gia and I will have to leave.” Jax paused and dropped down in front of Sammy. “I can't do that to her again. She loves this place and you. Please, just leave this alone.”
She hadn’t really stopped crying, but it wasn’t for herself anymore. It was for Jax. Her hand reached out and found him, cupping the side of his face lightly, her thumb gently stroking his cheek. “What happened to you?” she wondered aloud, her voice soft, meant more for herself than him. She looked into his eyes, and for a moment, she thought she saw it: a scared little boy who’d been strong too long after some great tragedy. Sammy fell into him, throwing her arms around his neck. “There’s nothing you could have done that would make me love you guys any less,” she whimpered by his ear. “Okay? So, just… tell me if and when you want to.”
